      Thats what makes him so interesting. There are certainly masters of different styles but guthrie is able to seemlessly switch between them and blend them together. Hes a musician first and one of the most technically skilled guitarists ever second.

    Remember Allan holdsworth talking about funnels and describing how his approach to what he was doing,how he used his instrument.He explained that he thought of the word the same way you could talk about a surgical instrument,something like a tool that you could use precisely to produce a very defined outcome.It’s about the music and the sounds and the instrument is the vehicle.The same way you might use a pen to write a love letter,it’s not about the pen.Guthrie seems very like that.The technical virtuosity is so complete that he’s thinking only about sounds.The how to is a given

    What a Guitar Monster! The tragedy about this is, if this were the 80's Guthrie would have been a "Guitar God & Virtuoso"... and he is, for sure... but most people I mention him to as a personal guitar inspiration say, " Who?... Who the hell is that?" What a tragedy... an absolute tragedy for talent such as this to go virtually unnoticed, for the most part.
    In an effort to describe MOST "rock" guitarists these days I will simply say this, " Hey kiddies... learn to strum or bang out only 4 chords and yes, you too, can be a "Rock Star!" THAT, is why players such as Guthrie Govan go nearly unnoticed while guitar hacks who nearly fall off of their fretboards when given a solo section (which is why solos have been nearly non-existent since the early-nineties) are acclaimed as the best and "coolest" "players" on the planet today.
    Guthrie is not only one of the greats, he's one of the most expressive, surprising and unique guitarists to ever play. I know great guitarists are not so great, popularity wise, because very few of them write pop/rock hits. EVH was one of the few who did so and maintained his image as a virtuoso and his originality while becoming popular in the "Hit World" at the same time.
    If Guthrie were to do this today he wouldn't have a chance in hell... no matter how great a chance he had at writing a hit. Why? Because no one gives a d@mn about really good players anymore!
    Would-be "musicians" want instant gratification that requires very little practice... and non-players want, for the most part cheap, easy and irregularly-fashioned verse (doggerel) they can hum to, sing along with, or something they feel would be easy to accomplish for them should they choose to go the route of an attempt at "Rock Stardom."
    Anyone - even the least naturally-talented who should not ever even attempt to pick up an instrument - can learn to slam out 4-5 chords and pretend they are rock stars. But few and far between can master their craft and truly dazzle and entertain like Guthrie Govan and the few others with the talent he has.
    The man is a "Monster", and a total thrill, at least for me, to listen to... no matter what he's playing or who he's playing with.

    • @vietnguyen4312
      @vietnguyen4312 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree. I remember in my playing days refusing to use a wha wha pedal as I felt that I wasn't good enough to use one. I see many guitarist soloing using their wha wha in ordor to compensate for their lack of technical ability. Learn to play properly first then bring out all the rock star sh!t and effects. Unfortunately today no one can tell the difference between noise and brilliance. Guthrie is a freak.

    • @martinpaddle
      @martinpaddle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RudyJunior7 there's no point comparing players like Max Ostro, Mateo Mancuso, or Guthrie... they all have more skill than what they'll ever be able to put to good use, and it's silly to think of one as better than the other. Whether you prefer one or the other comes down to taste. What's important though is that they all can improvise... there are some very technically adept players out there who are not good at that, and that makes their playing less impressive

    • @RudyJunior7
      @RudyJunior7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree they are all amazing players. Technical ability is the least impressive attribute to being a great musician but when you can improvise and have technical brilliance on top that’s what sets these guys apart. Shredding and saying nothing with it is boring.

    Excellent playing. But put him up against other guitarists and nothing really stands out to be "unique". Say what you want....Carlos Santana is no where as good technically but when he plays....you know its him. George Lynch? The same. EVH? The same. ...you know who they are right away. That's unfortunately the down side to being the most technically proficient.

    • @tanxbro113

      Guthrie is very unique and very emotional not because his guitar playing but is about the way he sing a lyrics through any songs in many music genre and not only in a specific genre but in each individual type of song. Guthrie is not a technical chaser even guthrie himself said he doesnt even pratice guitar he just play what he heard in his head, if music is a language then whats wrong with using words you had learned from the great?. what important is what word of emotion he choose to use and how he will craft it to share for many type of audience as you can see in the song, jazz, fusion, rock, and wierd noise guthrie himself

      @@davidderoux7552 Ayee even I have the same nickname man xD
      To your point though, I really wasn't trying to be rude, it's just that Guthrie is one of the few players you can't call boring unless you have a very different musical diet or if you are unfamiliar with the fusion-esque musical landscape. He strives to keep things interesting all the time and that shows. But of course, music in itself is super subjective. But I'd say that I honestly wouldn't want anyone to give his music up until you've explored most of it.
