This guy has done it. He's taken the soulful, bluesy, jazzy, tasty, melodic playing of Larry Carlton and Robben Ford of an earlier generation (both of whom Guthrie admires), and grafted it perfectly to the technical advances that guitar shredders developed. He's simply amazing.

@@canman87 hahaha i didn't see that bro, but, wtf man, Guthrie Govan is INSANE, he's a extremly complete guitarrist, whydo you say that he doesn't have flexibility?
Guthrie Gowan! He looks like a caveman who would have found some ugly trousers in a garbage, but, every electric guitarist looks like a bad musician, compared to him! He started guitar at 3 years old, later he refused a job as a teacher at the college (of cambridge, i guess) but, instead, he decided to play the guitar for our greatest pleasure. I've been playing the guitar for almost 40 years, because i wanted to play like Michael Schenker of UFO, then like Eddie VH, then like Allan Holdsworth then like Satriani and Vai but i really believe that this man (with such a strange face!) is above them all and can play like a true master jazz, funk, reggae, blues, rock, hard rock, metal, etc. Furthermore, he's the most humble guy i've seen among guitarist (with Tosin Abasin) and it is so refreshing... Have a long and a good life, GG!!!
very true he seems to be the most capable out there , i wouldnt say his face is strange, maybe just the gnarly english teeth that subtly jump out at some..
Yes, you're right! I don't know why, i forgot Shawn Lane, however is one of my favourites too, with Jason Becker! i apologize... Shawn was able to do such incredible things with a guitar (in indian or jazz rock style) and i felt so bad about his poor health and weight issues... Perhaps did i forget him and Jason because on is dead at 40 years old (2003) and the other is unable to play anymore because of his terrible illness: but he's still alive, and write music played by some other great guitarists!
In the world where there shouldn’t be a “best” as music isn’t a sport Guthrie manages to transcend all that with his mastery of all styles and other worldly musicianship. So articulate and manages to be an amazing player and also amazing teacher which isn’t always the case
Watching him close up is mesmerising. It's not just his technical mastery which is clear for anyone to see, it is his innate musicality. There is something playful, mischievous and generous hearted about his playing, no bombast at all. It's that look at the end of his solo for Steven Wilson's "Regret #9", "is that alright?" Meanwhile, as far as I can tell, he has left nothing in reserve at all, it is all out there in the music. I find it pleasing to think of him sharing a stage with John Petrucci, that's a dream line up right there.
Man... In the outro to this song he hits an improvised solo that wouldn't sound out of place on any all-time favourite solo (written or otherwise) list pretty much every time. Straight into the eargasm wank bank you go.
Some might say you can not type one guitarist on earth and tell he is the best because it is subjective, but come on... I want every single guitarist watch this performance and think about it again. THIS technique combined with the feeling... It is just next level, another world. I wish I can see him perform live very soon! Hats off.
But his song writing isn't that great. Bar a couple of nice songs he is great technically and at improvising, studio guitarist type music but there are much better writers. People can do his tapping just as well, there are guitarist with faster picking and left hands as too - granted some are not alive. There's nothing he has done no-one hasn't done before and many years ago, GG fanboys are an odd bunch. GG is great but he isn't miles ahead of the pack like fanboys seem he is; maybe they can't play guitar that well.
have you heard what he does tho, the choice of notes and ear that is so connected to his hands, and he truly is a wide variety player, almost like a jordan rudess but on guitar..
I do not think his song writing is bad, but even if it was, does it matter according to what I said? I did not said "he is the best writer" so your point makes no sense as an answer to my comment. "People can do his tapping just as well" - it also does not matter because playing guitar is not only being able to use one technique (even if you master it). Guthrie is a master in all styles, all his techniques are on master level so why shall you mark him as "not the best" saying others might do tapping just like he does - no sense at all. "There's nothing he has done no-one hasn't done before" - really? This guy is surely marked as one of the top players even by the other ones on worldclass level. He can play anything, play in styles of other guitarists as well. Nobody can copy Guthrie. Seems like you get hurt whenever somebody says good things about Guthrie. When I see your sentences like "GG fanboys are an odd bunch", "like fanboys seem he is". It purely shows your butthurt in this case. I do not like people like you who just show their frustration about other people who are really good at something, trying to persuade they are overrated or something.
@@Despond name some players then that can pick or run left-hand lines as fast as Guthrie without relying on larger 'chunking' patterns like sextuplets etc? Guthrie plays about as fast as is possible to be, AND creates lines with chromatic embellishments and flow, more like a piano player, at that upper echelon speed. Lines played that fast create excitement, exhilaration and huge interest for a 'listeners' type ear.
