    What's great about this video is that you talk about reading the books, and unlike other TH-cam channels it isn't all about the $$

      Thank you! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that compliment. I, like you feel that too many videos focus on the values of comic books. I just like reading and collecting them. I don’t care so much about the values. Comics should be read and enjoyed! 😊

      I actually prefer short boxes to long boxes for alot of diff reasons like this. The only time i use long boxes is when i have a collection of one comic series that wont fit in a short boxes. So for now i only use 2 long boxed for my hulk and spidey collection. I will sooner than later need another one for daredevil tho

    The fact that you don't have all of your comics facing each other to avoid spine damage is hard to watch. Nothing drops a NM down to a VF faster than spine creasing which can ONLY occur due to being stored far too tight or with all the books facing the same direction.

    • @wylier
      @wylier 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think that proper storage could prevent that problem.

    I'm not an avid single issue collector but when I do pick up floppies I store them in polyethylene bags. I replaced & stop using polypropylene bags. They tear & crinkle too easily. Polyethylene is not as clear in appearance as polypropylene but is more flexible, less likely to tear & from my limited research, provides better protection for short or long term storage. I'm not ever changing these bags so I hope this is true. You could use polyethylene for most of your books & use the mylar for your prized ones. Just an idea. If you can afford & don't mind buying the Mylar then that definitely works & as you said, you will never have to change them.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! Yes, I should have mentioned that I tried the polyethylene bags before, but the fact that they are not very clear kind of bothered me. I’m sure they do the job well though. I still have a lot of Mylar, so I may just continue using that for now lol thanks for the great suggestion though!

    8:00 bags ripple in older books because they're printed on newsprint which absorbs liquids whereas newer books are on glossy paper & so viola no instant bag ripple!

    This was a great idea for a video ..props to Vincent MacLean for suggesting it . I really like your "waiting room" bin for unread comics . I used to buy , bag , board and file my back issue purchases , and eventually realized I was forgetting to READ most of them . Now I won't bag and board a book until after I've read them (BTW , my unread bin is HUGE , I'm never going to be caught up ) I'd love to use mylites because you are SO right about the poly bags , but alas , I'm a cheap bastiche ! The app for keeping track of your comics is really cool . Wish there'd been such a thing when I started (When I started ,computers were as big as the rooms they were in ) When I first started collecting in the mid 70 's I used filing cabinets also , but once my color tion grew (topping out at 50,000 + , that was no longer feasible . Now I use short boxes (easier to move..I'm old !) Anyway , great video and one last thing ..I tagged you in a tweet the other day as I was asking folks for their best comic book run of the last 35 years . Mine was Peter David's Hulk ..what say you ? If you haven't already done such a video , perhaps a top 10 list of greatest sustained runs in comics history . See you on the next one .

      Eric! How’s it going!? Sorry I missed you tagged tweet! I haven’t been much on social media lately other than posting channel updates. Great idea for best runs video. I will definitely be doing a video on that soon my friend. As far as longest runs that I have sustained, nothing as epic as you or some of the other guys who are on the channel. I tend to be a sampler and read a little bit of everything. But I have really huge runs of Batman as Batman is my favorite superhero. As for my favorite run, I have many but I always tend to go back to the court of owls run by Scott Snyder. I have read that run so many times, and I never get sick of it. By the way, props to you. I cannot believe you have 50,000 comics!
      Would love to see that. That is legendary! Anyway, thanks for tuning in. Cheers mate!

I now have about 6or 7 thousand or so comics but I'm more of a Omnibus and Trades guy now .I had every Marvel Superhero Comic from FF #1 through Siege , and 99.9 % I'd DC's output from 1962 to right before Flashpoint .Turns out I was buying so much new stuff , I didn't have time to enjoy the hobby .Strangely enough , though I miss not having complete runs of Spidey , Avengers ,FF etc ..I am having more fun with the hobby than at any point in 40+ years .

    I also recommend filing cabinets. Measurements are critical as not all cabinets have the same drawer height or widths.
    Horizontal cabinets (very wide drawers) are great if depth is an issue. If depth isn't an issue, a four drawer legal cabinet (wider style) can be super handy as the density of storage is great as demonstrated in the video with the two rows side by side.

If I had alot of time I'd like to store everything in cabinets. I agree they are much more secure from fire, water, & theft (key locked) then cardboard boxes!

    I tried the filing cabinet route, but noticed that doing so damaged some of my comics. The hardware on the back of the drawers actually dented the comics stored in the front of the row, and the ones in the back got slightly bent as there was no support for the upper half of the book. (Basically they sort of bent over the back of the drawer, if that makes sense.) I went back to long boxes to keep them in better shape.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should consider joining the group "Comic File Cabinets" on Face Book. Lots of great guys with tons of tips on doing this. Also, the app Zap-Kapow comics is like CLZ, but it has a built in price guide that is updated monthly. I like it a lot better than CLZ. I also use Comic Base Pro which has a price guide built in (Yes, I am so anal that I use two catalog apps) I just finished mounting a furniture dolly to the bottom of my vertical cabinet and am about to load it up. I already have a 5 drawer lateral cabinet filled. So much better than comic boxes! Don't have to worry about my cat puking on them. Eventually I'm going to mount caster wheels on my lateral cabinet.

    DOUBLE BOARD the comics in the Poly. Not only does it give the comic a stronger back (harder to bend/more protected) it makes the comics LOOK BETTER (personal opinion obv lol) BUT it stretches out the poly a little bit (one sleeve can comfortably fit 2 boards and one comic). So double board with poly and ya can't go wrong, looks better and is better protected. :)

    Good ideas. Although I love walking into a room filled with long (or short) boxes I can look thru. I have a friend with about 20. I just need to win a lottery and buy them all from him. (He's looking to sell)

    I noticed you pulled out a couple key issues (First Appearances) in that box (21:22 in the video). Definitely hang onto those. Check out an app called Key Collector Comics. I would be happy to purchase those short boxes from you :P

      @Dante19883  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes! The books in the filing cabinet I’m going to hold on to until I’m in a box whereafter I will then pass on to my son or daughter ( whoever is more interested lol) if you are really interested in purchasing the short boxes send me a message on IG or Twitter @geekeryd and we can chat more. Just an FYI all of the books in the shirt boxes are modern 2012-2016 but they are all Marvel/ DC if I recall correctly. Cheers!

    Irrelevant to the video: how about the history of costume changes for heroes video. But one at a time please. Eg. Let's discuss which is your favourite Batman costume.

    great video!do you suggest 3-mil poly bags?

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup three mils are pretty reliable and cheaper than Mylar and they don’t crinkle like the thinner poly bags. I’m just not a fan because I find them to be a little opaque and not super clear... they do their job well though!

    great video!I Have a question and i need help-i bought today mylites2 and halfback boards( E.Gerber). I found the boards a bit rough in the surface, not shiny, is that a problem for my comics? is it safe? someone said that they might cause dimples in the back cover. i would really appreciate if you helped me. Thank you.

    When you buy the mylars .Do they come with boards or where you reccomend buying them from?any particular brand?

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there Benny! When I buy the mylars they do not come with boards. I actually just buy the boards from my local comic shop. I don’t discriminate usually between brands of boards. As long as they are Silver Age size, I am good. Hope this helps!

    HEY I'M NEW TO THE COMIC WORLD I READ THE WALKING DEAD COMIC'S THE ISSUE VERSION. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT BOARDS AND BAGS I SHOULD USE THANKS

    • @bennruda11
      @bennruda11 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure he answers that in video but you can use mylar to uphold it longer but if the issue is post 2005 or so the bag n board you get from the comic shop should suffice.
      I use silver age bags as he states as well and boards from shops. I check em now n then every few months in case the bags or boards start to degrade and the comic.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have to say that most of my collection I acquire online.. usually lots on eBay. I went really nuts buying comics on eBay between 2012 and 2016 with breaks in between. I have slowed down significantly now because I feel like I have most of the books that I really want and could realistically afford. Definitely keep monitoring for eBay deals. Comic shops will rip you off! Comics there are always super overpriced

    Hey Man, I am interest in purchasing comic and was wondering the best way to buying back issue of comics like Uncanny X-Men or Amazing Spider-Man comics without breaking the bank. I am like you that I just like to have the comics and not so much about the value.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! Thanks for reaching out! Yes, back issues of X-Men and Spidey can get quite expensive, however if you’re getting the right books, you won’t have to spend that much! My first bit of advice is to avoid Silver Age books for now as they are always quite expensive, even the ones that aren’t really key issues. Start with the Bronze Age books (1970 and above) and work your way up. Secondly, try to avoid any key issues for now unless they are cheap (check out my affordable key issue video). When you go to buy any non key issue spidey or X-men book try to buy them in lots (usually eBay is good for this) or if you are buying them one issue at at a time from the comic shop, don’t spend more than 3 or 4 dollars per issue as they are definitely not worth it in my opinion. Also, if you opt for lower grades of the issues you are buying, you will save even more. I really like Midtown comics’ online store as they frequently have sales and filler books are usually not trip expensive. Give them a shot if you live in the US. If you live in Canada though, the shipping will be quite expensive. If you have any other questions, let me know. Happy hunting!

      If you're not dead set on physical single issues, trade paperbacks and/or digital subscriptions like Marvel Unlimited can make it a lot more affordable to read old back issues. If you only want physical single issues, then I agree with Dante D. For X-Men you'd probably be best-off starting with non-key issues from the Claremont era. Issues that aren't first appearances or part of well known storylines like the Phoenix Saga or something can be fairly affordable. As a completely random example, you can find Uncanny X-Men 156 for less than $10, particularly if it hasn't been graded.

    Step 1; sell all your floppy issues.
    Step 2; get the trade paperback/graphic novel version, omnibus in particular.
    Step 3; put them on a bookshelf next to your other books.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    cabinets ???? WRONG!!! use cardboard acid free boxes!

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did that for a while but it was a pain because they were stacked on top of each other to conserve space. When I wanted a comic at the bottom, I had to take all the top ones off first to access it. I find my comics much more accessible in cabinets

    • @JohnSmith-zl8rz
      @JohnSmith-zl8rz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dante19883 More accesible in cabinets? of course, but more secure for the comics? not!, cardboards protect more, acids of the cabinets and open things are risky. For boxes access you buy shelves to store each box in a row. I use Seville Shelves and Bagsunlimited boxes.
