Absolutely awsome video! You've done some great videos but this is my absolute favourite! Great job using the service info, that saved you so mutch time. You keep amazing me❗
Thanks so much for this great video. It's march 2023 and have a 2006 Highlander Hybrid with EXACTLY the same symptoms.. I do believe in answer to a question you posed during the video, both times the car stalled it had been running for a couple hours and I was on a highway, and I believe both times I was climbing a hill on the highway so the gas motor was certainly running when the car stalled. I got Check VSC system, Check Hybrid system, the power steering became very difficult - I guess harder than the old standard steering system, but I was able to safely guide that car to the shoulder (thankfully there WAS a shoulder). Then I simply stopped the car and after one minute started it. I was able to get it to drive but the message "Check Hybrid System State" or something like that was still visible. I guess it was in limp mode. I drove it to the destination. When I started the car up the next day everything looked completely normal (except I wasn't feeling normal about it). Nonethe less I drove it something like 700 miles before the problem happened again - also on a hill going up at highway speeds. I will check on the recall - not sure if they would do it after all this time , or maybe it was already done.. But might as well. I was thinking of just reseating the connections for the communications cables but now after your warning I may not want to try.. Anyway not sure what's next but whatever I will go in with a good background before taking the next step. Thanks so much, again.. great video.
Omg great video! I actually made a video trying to figure out this p3105 on the same car. I replaced the smart controller and the fuse box and left it there for 6 months. Changing the 3 fans makes sense because when my code came up it always went with the three fan running a full speed. Thanks. I’m going to order those fans now.
“Check Hybrid System” message on Dash. Car would run normal until randomly it would cut out with no power. Once at a standstill I could restart back to normal (just like in the vid). Found Low Voltage on Block 5 of 15 using Techstream. Took the case off the battery and removed the 3 packs and started measuring voltages. Found 1 cell of 30 had 9.31V while the rest had ~10.64V. Each Battery Pack is encased with 32 Rivets and Windshield Sealant on each pack. I also had to Discharge & Charge each module 3 times to “recondition” the cells and see which modules could be close to failure. Found 2 more modules wouldn’t hold as much voltage as the others. The Recondition/Cycling part has been the worst so far & I am in the middle of sourcing the correct modules...
Whoever disliked this video most definitely does not enjoy to learn new knowledge of unfamiliar systems to have the proper diagnostic approach if you was to ever encounter such a problem. Amazing video mario keep providing very informative and easily understandable content. Thanks.
Good job on fixing this Hybrid and also for being careful what to not film since many DIYers are watch these including myself. Way above my comfort level and not safe to tinker with. Thanks for the Alldata bookmark tip! I appreciate your experience level and wish more professional techs had your skill level. Stay safe!
That’s freaking awesome Mario thanks for sharing, watch out for water ingress, we get loads of it here in the UK on Lexus Hybrids. The Big relay block in the Hybrid battery sits at the lowest part of the pan floor so any water ingress into the boot will run down and soak the relay block and short out the battery. 😳
Killer diag man. Confirmed with the math channels too. AND YOU GOT A SHOUT OUT FROM THE MASTER (DIAGNOSE DAN!)!!! Loving learning from you. Can’t wait to see you grow the channel even more friend. Your customers are lucky to be served by you, and most probably have no clue.
Great video as always Mario! I can't think who it might have been that mentioned A+B....Take it easy buddy and great decision to keep the hybrid battery dismantling out. Training is a must when it comes to HV. Be in touch.
Anytime bud!! Wait till you start adding a mask and alarm around A+B, you get the ultimate wiring check tool! Be good my friend and if you need support with the hybrid and EVs give me a shout.
Great video, always nice to see people expanding their horizon. Too bad it was not possible to test each fan, one at a time. You probably now have two good fans and one bad one on the shelf. Maybe the defect would come out with bench testing.
Thanks for the feedback!! Way i see it is, they all(the fans) have put in the same amount of work. If one has failed, another will follow. Just like coils! Guaranteeing our work prevents unnecessary labor in the future. If i were to replace only one fan, and in six months another fails. Who will pay the labor to dig that second fan out? And then a third, right? What may seem like a bit of an overstep in repairs actually will save the customer money in the long run. The last thing i want, is for the customer to return with the same fault, for a different fan, in which they'll have to pay the labor to replace that fan. Lastly, Toyota explicitly states to replace all of them, for what it's worth 😆 just like gm says to replace all lifters if one needs replacing I truly wish that the general public would read this and understand that when we diagnose a fault, we seek the root cause. Also that when we repair a vehicle, we're thinking long term, and hoping to avoid comebacks, and unnecessary repeat labor Thanks bud for taking the time to watch and comment!
I stumbled across this video by doing research on a 2006 Toyota Hybrid i just picked up. Its the 4x4-i limited model. Navigation fully loaded yatta yatta. I am a union carpenter in NYC and i commute from Long island. I have this 2006 Toyota highlander hybrid 4x4-i fully loaded. The guy i got this from was absolutely meticulous. When i say this thing is border line show room i mean it. But ive never owned a Hybrid and my electrical system's knowledge is below entry level. So i wanted to do some research on the car. theres nothing wrong with the car but i like to know at least some knowledge of the systems of the car so if anything was to happen while im commuting i could possibly diagnose on the fly. I am actually blown away that this truck came out in 06. Toyota really went in on designing this truck during the height of the hybrid cars breaking into the industry. The guy who owned this truck was a Spanish guy who did some printing work for Disney. He must do well cause when me and a family friend picked up the truck there was a 2018 Bentley Continental in the garage and a brand new 2021 C-Class in the drive way. Safe to say the Toyota stood out. It was shoved in the back yard shed covered with a car cover. He said its been sitting for a couple years but he keeps up with the system's and starts the car monthly and runs it for hours. When we asked why he was getting rid of it he said it has to many miles and he just doesn't need it. He wanted to junk it. Its sitting at 210,000k miles on it. No lights are on the dash and like i said its extremely clean. When i started watching your video and you were diagnosing the car the first thing i thought of was the recall which you ended up touching on. Every little thing works, Literally. Touch Screen navi works, even the radio controls on the steering wheel work and those never work. The guy said 90% of the miles are highway, he commuted to the city as well and had a parking garage at his office so the truck was never left on the city streets. If it was it would not look the way it does. I was given every service record with the truck from 2006 until 2018 when he stopped driving the car. Like i said i just got it so i still have one eye brow up. Its almost to good to be true. He could have easily gotten close to $3K for the truck the way it is. I think i actually annoyed him cause i kept saying are you sure you want to sell this that cheap? He said the truck is perfect for me and he's happy its going to a good home. That's good enough for me. Seeing that you have some experience with these hybrids i wanted to ask you a few questions. What should i keep an eye on? Is there anything i should check before taking this thing on a 2 hour commute every day? I also wanted to know if i could turn off the Hybrid feature where it turns off at lights and what not.... i just cant seem to get comfortable with that. Like i said the truck has 210,000K miles on it. Mint condition but i do understand its a hybrid and after seeing you open those battery packs im actually blown away at the electronics in this truck. Any advice would be appreciated. I Paid about $800 for the truck so i mean even if i get a year out of it i lose nothing. Shoot, if i get 6 months out of it i still save over $2,000 on train passes. Its $380 for a Monthly train pass from Long island to Penn station and that's not including the subway. Basically i just want to have the knowledge to do what i can to make this truck last. Thank you!
I would advise you not to attempt any repair at all on a hybrid yourself without proper training and protective equipment. Aside from that, it's a Toyota, lol you'll be fine! 😆
Interesting! My understanding of CAN as a differential signal is that A-B is what the modules use to communicate, which removes the noise from can’t and call. This means that A+B will be twice the size of the common mode noise, but that it shouldn’t matter (subject to A-B being clean). So, I am keen to lean why you/ pico have concerns about A+B. Where can I read/ watch more? Thanks!
Thank you for the information. That math channel technique was something new to me. I will be looking for the video you made on that topic . . . Did you have the filter on your can high and low signals ?
@@SuperMarioDiagnostics so when dealing with different signals from computers at what point is using a filter ideal or not ideal to decide whether there is too much noise ? Do you have a video that goes in to that or one that you would recommend? Is not using the filter function a form of peak detect ? (On pico scope) . I know it a lot of questions, if you want we can discuss via email.
How many hours would be charged for 3 fan replacement for battery pack if I took to a shop?? Just got code this morning stalled. Waited 30mins started right up and drove ? With hybrid warning with hybrid comm code
Good diagnostics. While respect of high voltage is important, fearmongering is not productive. It is actually difficult to find a place where one can shock themselves without intense deliberate effort when the car is off. The idea that gloves are needed for replacing rubber nubblies is absurd.
When addressing the general public, one must remember that anyone will run with what you say and potentially cause themselves great harm. So I'd rather play it safe as to what i share, than to assume that people will know what is safe and what is not

Heck of a video! I recently heard about the A+B math channel myself but haven’t seen it used! Great example! Thanks for sharing!
