Even the original mobile suit gundam has a premise like that, even code geass ha a premise like that since most mecha anime are focused on war and most main character are teens and they have to get their hands on a mecha somehow then obviously this is almost always going to be the premise of majority of the mecha anime. It's like that isekai meme where almost everyone got hit by a truck because they have to die somehow in order to get isekaid

However I think what Gundam does differently is that it uses a teenager with no military experience in order to bring a sense of humanity into the overall story, whereas a character with a military career would feel very different about certain events during a war. In Amuro's case, there's legitimate reasons as to why he was where he was when he had to get into the Gundam. In the early stages he doesn't even really want to fight in the Gundam, but he has to in order to survive, and for the survival of the people aboard the White Base. Code Geass I think actually diverts from this trope a lot. In Code Geass, none of the Knightmare pilots are just random kids. Each of them have reasons why they're piloting a Knightmare, and reasons that drive them to become better pilots. For example, Suzaku is a Britannian soldier, Kallen is a resistance fighter, and Lelouch uses Knightmares as tools in order to accomplish his goals, but he isn't necessarily good at piloting them himself. There's definitely some nuance to it, but what I think these shows do well is that there's more to the show than just the mechas. And the characters come to understand the responsibility and the horrors of piloting these mecha. They don't use the dream scenario of "oh, I used to be a complete nobody, but now I have this super powerful mech and I'm a hero now." It's still too early to judge this new show though, and we'll just have to wait and see.
I certainly remember hearing the anime get dunked on in reviews. Still, that theme song has got to be one of the most blood-pumping mecha anthems I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
I'm just happy we're getting a new "real robot" series. I think the design is ok, it's different. Some hated the Eva designs back when Evangelion first released.
Actually a lot of ppl hated IBO designs too cuz they hated the thin waist. IBO is my personal fav so I dont see anything too bad with this new series except character design, looks too gundam age.

I laughed to myself thinking back to comments on YT where ppl had the same complaints and yet for me personally, it was my favorite part. Though TBF, every IBO kit that has the perpetual weak waist problem cuz many are so top heavy.

Seeing there're a lot more mecha anime coming this year made me happy. But, most animation studio use 3DCG for their mecha. Only sunrise stick with the old school hand drawn animation which made me happy and excited about the Kyoukai Senki. The other anime I'm excited about is 86, I read the novel in advance before April and all I can say is....CAN'T WAIT

oh... these are actually bigger then CGs Knightmare frames- those were 1/35 scale and about 4-5 meters tall. KMFs are still some of the more realistic suits we've ever seen in terms of size and having wheels on the legs
I frickin love the arm design. The whole mechanical aspect of it looks like if the Caterpillar company decided to go into mecha + 50 years and a billion dollars of investment.

looks like the art directors looked at some battletech designs from the clan factions for the elbows and knees. not complaining as its a rare designe esthetic in mecha and its nice to see.
I've been really interested to see Bandai expand their mech territory (just like how Kotobukiya always tries). They have all the necessary elements already (from original concepts to production). Seeing some fresh mech series under their banner would just make Bandai a reputable domain for mecha, and I hope this one might give them an experimental start.
We'll have to see how well this goes. From what I can see I can't make a definitive good or bad assumption. The design is nice, a little boxy, but nice. It really will come down to a good story.
That's why Valvrave and Buddy Complex from sunrise fail....It's good but after a few year people just forget the existent of those mecha anime....And there's few more made by other studio most people probably never heard of. I never see any discussion about Juushinki Pandora directed by Kawamori.
This reminds me of a combined Evangelion and Iron Blooded Orphans vibe. The way the mech runs(functions) is how an Eva Unit runs and the frame is like a Gundam Frame.
Those "non-gundam" mecha anime are usually very gundam-like anyway. And awesome too. Geass was great, Valvrave was great, Buddy Complex was fun. Looking forward to this one.
Not to mention back in the 80's Hajime Yatate is the go to team making mecha anime in Sunrise. Dunbine, Dougram, Dragonar, Layzner, VOTOMS. It was the mecha heyday.
Looks like it will be pretty silly. But I'm all in on giving it a try. Now I gotta rewatch full metal panic. Loved it when it came out but I don't remember much of it.
If I had to guess, this series' plamo will probably be limited to the 1/72 HG line like the Full Metal Panic kits. At the very least, this looks interesting. I'll check it out when I can.

I'm a bit disappointed that we won't be seeing an IBO prequel or Gekko anime adaptation, I'll be looking forward to this new Non-Gundam anime series. The last time they did something big with the non-gundam stuff was...the Code Geass anime compilation movies and the Resurrection one.

Maybe this will end up being really good. It’d be nice to see a mecha get some popularity. I know IBO got some more praise when it reached Netflix but having something gain traction while it’s airing could give mecha the Guren Lagan & Code Geass boost the genre needs.
I like the overall aesthetic of the suits, and I love the scale; it helps my suspension of disbelief ever-so-slightly when the mecha are on the smaller side. I'm looking forward to seeing what the grunt suits look like and what the prices are.
Unfortunately I'm not too optimistic about this project. This whole thing reminds me of buddy complex, and while it wasn't bad I didn't quite enjoyed it. I was distracted by the fact that a lot of the design look too similar of Gundam's designs, and the mecha shown here reminds me of those protagonist mecha.
I had the same issue with the show (for me luxon was like oo quanta,you know bcoz of the shield hanging behind and colour scheme) but I quite liked it in all the other aspects
Looks neat, the kits will probably be pretty robust with the simplified joints and will take well to realistic detail like wear, grease, etc. hoping to see some cool villain mecha and grunts!
I like the little AI animal friends. They seem to be the Haro equivalent except they're actually cute. One's a fluffy sheep thing and the other is a fox so i want plushies of both. The HGs are also something i'll probably get. They seem more interesting to me than 3MMs.
Given that there hasn't been anything new from FMP in a while, I'm definitely excited to have a new mecha show that shares some of the design elements of arm slaves. If the kits will be anything like the G40 Industrial ver., they're gonna be amazing. Can't wait!
3:56 the full metal panic HGs are 1/60th scale. If the kits for this new series are 1/72 scale and the same height as other high grades, wouldn't that make the full scale version larger than an armslave unit? Meaning, with Arbalest up to Exia's knee, the new mech might be closer to middle of the thigh to the hip as far as height.
It looks interesting and at 1/72 scale an ambitious modeler can find figures of people and ground vehicles and convert them to make detailed dioramas, should be fun.
The colour scheme, the power logo, 4 ruling blocks?? This is definitely a non-gundam spin off of IBO and Hajiroboshi. This is gonna be interesting! But I am still waiting for an anime series in the IBO universe, maybe during the calamity war or something
I hope Sunrise studios is not using the Gundam franchise like a puppet; as a way of introducing new ideas and concepts followed with implementing them into other mecha shows, like they did with Code Geass. They should focus on drastically evolving the Gundam anime by pushing them to their limits instead as means of gaining higher popularity globally.
30 minute sisters is the new future. Anyway, you didn't mention the story parallels to kamen rider build. U should watch it, it has one of the best heisei rider stories out there.

Ken Okuyama could make things interesting. The G40 grew on me quite a lot. They look pretty detailed, as high grades go, too.

Given that there hasn't been anything new from FMP in a while, I'm definitely excited to have a new mecha show that shares some of the design elements of arm slaves. If the kits will be anything like the G40 Industrial ver., they're gonna be amazing. Can't wait!
3:56 the full metal panic HGs are 1/60th scale. If the kits for this new series are 1/72 scale and the same height as other high grades, wouldn't that make the full scale version larger than an armslave unit? Meaning, with Arbalest up to Exia's knee, the new mech might be closer to middle of the thigh to the hip as far as height.
Not Gundam Seed but still one of the best mecha franchise still going 😏
It looks interesting and at 1/72 scale an ambitious modeler can find figures of people and ground vehicles and convert them to make detailed dioramas, should be fun.

The colour scheme, the power logo, 4 ruling blocks?? This is definitely a non-gundam spin off of IBO and Hajiroboshi. This is gonna be interesting! But I am still waiting for an anime series in the IBO universe, maybe during the calamity war or something
I hope Sunrise studios is not using the Gundam franchise like a puppet; as a way of introducing new ideas and concepts followed with implementing them into other mecha shows, like they did with Code Geass. They should focus on drastically evolving the Gundam anime by pushing them to their limits instead as means of gaining higher popularity globally.

Anyway, you didn't mention the story parallels to kamen rider build. U should watch it, it has one of the best heisei rider stories out there.
I'm don't know if he ever watch Kamen Rider?
