I was at this show. I saw a lot of shows at the old Chicago Stadium and it definitely was not known for its great acoustics. I’m surprised this sounds as good as it does.
I do vividly remember Jimmy chugging from a bottle that looked like Jack during the show, because I remember remarking to my buddy, “how can he pound that much Jack and still play?”
We knew something was up because we thought it was weird that they were taking a break when it didn’t seem like they had played that long.
For context, from what I remember, this was a pretty hot ticket. These shows sold out fast. I know the only way I got in was my buddy’s dad was in the liquor biz and did business with the Wirtz family.
That said, when Robert Plant came out with the bad news, the fans weren’t too happy. I remember a bunch of M80s coming down from the upper decks and wondering, “who the f@ck brings M80s to a show?”
I remember they said they would come back at the end of the tour for a redo. But then I think Plant’s kid passed away and the rest of the tour was canceled.
I remember it was a PITA getting down to the Stadium to get a refund.
“Nobody’s Fault But Mine” sounded really great. Loud as f@ck.
I just realized I’m the only one left alive of the people I went to this show with. A lot of people with no “off” switch back then.
I was the only one who left town to go to school. Definitely saved my life.
Keep on keepin’ on, rock & roll people!

Huge Zeppelin fan here, but then if you are watching this I'm sure y'all are as well. This is first show of that tour, Page had just broken his pinky finger on left hand, hence the Jack Daniel's medicinal therapy. All my fellow Zep fans check out "Earl's Court 1975". Best 70's Era footage.

I once fired bottle rockets in the old Boston Gardens. 🤣
LZ played 3 songs in Tampa Stadium in the '70's and ditched the show because it rained for a few minutes. Bastards. Caused a major riot and substantial property damage.

Saw them in Chicago in 1977, can't confirm if it was this night or one of the earlier shows. My most vivid memory is the opening - stage is dark, Jimmy hits and holds the first note of SRTS and the spotlight comes on over him - he's got the double neck Gibson and was wearing that white dragon outfit. What a great showman

I was at the show the next night, which was Easter Sunday. I remember the opening as being exactly as you describe it with the concert opening with The Song Remains the Same. They played for a little over 3 hours on Easter Sunday. It was an awesome performance. Whenever one of the three friends who went to the concert with me would visit my house over the next several years, I always blasted SRTS on the stereo in memory of that concert.

A real shame as the band was hot that night and I thought Jimmy's playing was not just great, but imaginative. He was tossing around new phrasings in SIBLY & NQ which were fresh. Everything was on point until the first solo in TYG when you see he is confused and really out of it. Somehow, he fumbles through it...kinda but then soldiers through, and turns out a couple of good last solos before ending the song. Jimmy was on the damn floor barely coherent and he was still gonna finish that damn song! That is pretty impressive. Not sure if anyone noticed but Page drank from a large, clear bottle at the beginning of NQ. If someone dosed him through that bottle it would have kicked in during TYG. It would be one thing if Page was for shit from the get-go, but he was playing an excellent show as were the rest of the band. I know Jimmy had his demons, but in this case I don't think was Page's fault, I think he was dosed.

I was sitting with my six friends in the 8th row, smack down the middle. Loud as hell...but I loved it. Jimmy looked like he was not feeling well. The roadies got a chair for him to sit on. Jimmy could barely stand. The band all walked off. Robert Plant came back to the stage after 20 minutes and either he or the house announcer said: '' Jimmy is not feeling well due to food poisoning.'' I think Jimmy had too much liquor and drugs that night. They played close to 7 songs. They did refund our money. To make things worse, I took photos of the show and had them enlarged. My mom ( who was a religious fanatic) shred them in pieces, believing they were Devil worshippers with their long hair and clothes.

    • @psaint60

That is hilarious (or not). I know because my mom hated those days. She hated that all her friends kids were straight arrows and me and my brothers jammed with the rockers and jazz peeplez. She used to do regular sweeps of our bedrooms and towards the end of my senior year (1978), she started going through my photo albums and removed every picture of me with long hair or playing with friends, parties we played at, concerts- burned it all. In her mind, I guess if there weren’t pictures, she could pretend it didn’t happen.
Hey-about this show. I was on the main floor too, further back and I don’t know about you, but I was a little nervous about how that exit was going to go.
I took a girl to a show at the International Amphitheater either just before this or just after. Rick Derringer warmed up for Kansas and after Rick did a couple of encores, some scuffle broke out between some main floor folks and the first side mezz level and a
chair war broke out with every folding chair getting thrown down, then back up. I had to get on top of this girl (not a bad thing) so she didn’t get clocked in the noggin’
That place and the Aragon Brawlroom were always an adventure 🤣.
      Thanks for the memories. 👍🏼🙏

@@psaint60 Don't forget, Led Zeppelin played 4 shows at the Chicago Stadium in 1977. That was an injustice for the 18,000 fans that night ( who never acted hostile towards the cancelled concert.) They did refund our money ( which was generous of them since they did play one hour). But, we do know Led Zeppelin always played 3- 4 hour shows.

    • @psaint60
      @psaint60 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@sal5027 Yeah, I remember trying to find the set lists from the other shows, and of course the anticipation grows as you’re reading reviews of the other shows. We were really looking forward to it.
But even at 17, I had seen enough crowds go bad for various reasons that I wanted to get out of there ASAP after we got the bad news. I was glad once people voiced their initial displeasure/frustration, people just left.
If I remember correctly, I think the Andy Frain Ushers were working the Stadium that night. Those guys were the goon squad that kept the peace during Blackhawks hockey games, so maybe they helped keep things from escalating.
And unlike today, people didn’t go into the neighborhood to cause problems. Especially not in 1977 at Madison & Wood. 🤣

Probably they had a shitty monitor mix too. It doesn’t sound like Page is even playing the same song a lot of this show. Heroin, coke in the wrong combo too close to show time. Yikes. Touring sucks sometimes. Especially for an addict.

Pretty ignorant comment. Zeppelin were one of the best live bands. On this show Page was dope sick, but every band has had some bad shows. How can you judge a whole band like that? Zeppelin played many legendary shows worthy to be remembered.

    • @psaint60
      @psaint60 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That’s interesting to hear both sides of this POV. I was at this show and although I was a fan , I wasn’t as diehard as some of you guys.
I do remember growing up and hearing Led Zep fans that loved the studio work but thought the live stuff was, “meh”.
The thought was, it was like going to see the Beatles and expecting to hear note for note renditions of the Sgt. Pepper material.
This was also the caveat for many of the “jam” bands of that time that I saw. You could count on bands like the Dead, Allman Bros, Derek & The Dominos, Weather Report, etc. were going to use the songs you were familiar with as the jumping off point. They always pushed the creative envelope and sometimes that resulted in magic and sometimes it just never gelled and was less than great. Everyone knew that and so everyone was along for the ride to see where it went.
I remember Bobby Whitlock saying that D&D never played a song the same way twice. “Why would you?” he said. I’ve heard other less PC musicians say “if all you want to hear is the record, stay home and listen to the record.”
Recently I stumbled onto some old Zeppelin live stuff here on YT that looked like it was from some BBC program, probably before they hit it big and it was some great, in your face, straight up blues jam stuff and they were absolutely killing it.
I guess my point is, people like what they like. There’s always haters. And if you try to make everyone happy, you will probably end up making no one happy-especially yourself.
