Welcome to coding into resus or with a complex critical unjury. These teams are incredible. I went into shock and arrived to ER. I was placed in an acute bed as a category too- life threatening. I had a crash cart an a doc and two nurses with me.
Within a minute Then my heart rate and blood pressure tanked and they coded me and rolled me into a trauma room (spent fourteen hours there and then into ICU) and holy God. About ten people with other people outside making notes and getting meds. It was so overwhelming but these teams are incredible. Reassuring me, holding my hand, gentle touches. Standing over me tellinge I'm safe as they pushed fluids into me. These teams are incredible and I owe them my life, as does so many other people. I have no words to explain how grateful I am.

I mean, I do that (obviously not on that scale) when i'm in pain - say that I'm in less pain that I actually am just because I'm a guy and try to, in a way, act tough. I don't know why I do that, and I'm not doing that do impress anyone. I guess it's because as male we're supposed to be and act tougher than females and hide our actual feelings.
10/10 would make him feel worse. It'd make him realise he is in max pain. He did say 9 because it really is hurting him a lott, not 10 because he still is conscious to experience it. Asian guys are mentally pretty strong - esp Chinese and Taiwanese. I once saw an aged (65+) Chinese guy walk into a hospital all by himself after suffering a heart attack. He had even injured his head due to a fall from the attack. I hope this ^ guy is doing better now.

By "Asian" I meant the continent of which China, Taiwan, and Japan are a part. Not necessarily the entire race. These guys may not look big with 20" arms (tall neither) but have sheer mental strength.

I also once got crashed by a car(thankfully no major and barely any minor injuries), I was also afraid to contact my family. Not because I was tough, but because of fear, mistrust...

I lost my leg in a working accident. Shipping container fell on me. I know the feeling this guys is going through. I could literally start crying again. Feel sorry for him but I hope he has a speedy recovery and smooth rehabilitation.

Here in Germany I know they sedate the fuck out of you when this happens. They don't need you to be awake and feel the pain. Did you ask for anything or what was the procedure?
Can't imagine the pain he went through until he got painkillers. If he were hanging on a piece of chain, he probably had to go through the pain of the chain cutting through his skin inch by inch slowly. Thats just pure awful.
Adrenalin helps a lot with the initial pain. If the injury was inflicted slowly, it was still a living nightmare, though.
I've broken my arm as a kid. The worst pain I felt was when they rotated my arm for the x-ray. I barely felt the actual break.
Probably gave him pain killers right when paramedics arrive. If the injury is that bad, they give you pain meds on the spot

Everyone’s talking about the incredible surgeons but let’s appreciate Daniel who was able to help this man communicate and help him understand what was going on.
Being bilingual is not comparable to the years of training it takes to become a surgeon. Comes naturally when you have parents that are immigrants.

@@fred3965 True, lots of drugs. I had a serious surgery once, and they made me wait (NO FUCKING JOKE) for like ONE WHOLE HOUR after I came out of surgery. I was in complete pain. No joke, I was watching the second-hand of the clock, counting it down every minute, asking nurse when they could give me morphine. So, yes, you can stay awake and fight it, if you try really, really hard.

@@fred3965 Thanks, you good man, Alfred. Yeah, I am. But it a surgery I didn't expect and did not do anything to have caused. Just born with a hidden timebomb, which I didn't know anything about until I was in my 40s. I'm better now, but it did set me back a while in life. Yet, almost all my normal life has come back, but it took some time. So, I feel for this guy, and I have been there.

everyone talking about the doctors but lets talk about the balls of steel this man has he didnt cry he didnt panic he answered all the questions and he didnt want his family to worry about him.

He only felt the pain after the incident. Not even close to the same but i smashed a bottle into a wall trying to open it once and I cut my finger open quite deep (near the palm, the index one), and I cut off a nerve. I knew i shouldnt panic soo I calmed down went to a random house and asked for help, they wrapped my hand. Didnt feel any pain and didnt call an ambulance just sat there thinking if i should call my mom or go to family doctor first. the only pain i felt is later when they dissinfected the wound and felt discomfort when they were stiching it (like someone would be pinching the wound) really unpleasant. My finger still gets "shocked" when i hit the scar on something hard.
if it was me ... probably a mess in the room because of my screaming and since i would not be able to not mve probably i would have got it worse and then Bye hand !

the most pain I ever felt was when I was jumping on some concrete "boxes" when I was 13 and I missed the jump and hit the middle of my shin on the corner of the concrete box, it was so strong that it sank a part of my shin, luckily I didn't need surgery, just some care at home, but I remember well that when that happened I couldn't breathe in so much pain, I couldn't scream or cry, my vision was blurred, and when I started to be able to speak and breathe properly I started to vomit in pain. I hope I never feel anything like this again, if it happened with a hard hit on the shin, I don't even want to imagine what I would look like with my hand practically amputated.
Damn, this poor guy. The injury itself is horrific enough without being in a foreign country alone and not knowing the language. Good reminder why it's so important to employ multi-lingual people; sometimes you can't wait for a translator. Amazing work by the whole team.
Completely agree! I can't imagine how scary it must be to have people all around you and not be able to understand what they're saying, especially in a situation such as this.

i would say its way more important to learn the language of the place you are going to be because of the point you just made do you want to trust where ever you go they will have someone that can speak your language or do you want to make sure you can communicate what you need to. im lucky english is spoken damn near everywhere and mandarin is a little easier to find but imagine if you spoke idk swahili you would probably be screwed.
That guy doesn't quite know english but is still brave enough to go to another country to work, and doesn't want his parents to know about the accident.. that guy definitely earned my respect.

I just love that there’s multiple people in there that speak Mandarin, I saw at least three different people speaking Mandarin to him. Seeing people in a majorly English speaking country being able to speak multiple languages in such a stressful environment is so good, and I imagine having more than just one individual who can speak your language in the room is at least somewhat comforting when everyone else can’t.

He’s truly a warrior, far away from his family, his country to work for better support to his own family, can barely speak the language and his hand nearly got amputated in a country he’s only been in for a month. He didn’t even want to tell his family during the moment because he didn’t want to worry them, damn he’s strong. I’m sure he’s told them now, now that things went for the better, but woah

People like this guy are often the ones who end up in jobs like that too, the jobs no one else wants but that most benefit from. People in these jobs have an extremely high rate of depression, suicide and injury. Not only are we torturing animals and ruining the environment, we're forcing people like this young man into dangerous jobs, both physically and mentally.
Beside of his scar/wound, it is realy looking great! Respect for the surgeons who attached the near amputation hand.
I'm from the States and I am impressed by the efficiency shown by the trauma team. How Dr. Pincus acts as more of an operations supervisor and is focusing on what needs to be done instead of having to make quick decision while also performing the task simultaneously, is an interesting model that I'm not accustomed to seeing. I thought we had decent health care here. From my perspective, Australia is top notch.

Because they had called in ahead of arrival they were able to assemble their trauma team (generally at least 15min before patient arrives, if able) which would consist of ED, ICU, specialist staff, radiologists, etc. In this time they all discuss their roles and focus', with medications pre-drawn up, etc. This is a well established hospital in a big city in Aus. In a standard situation this many staff would not be readily available (until called on), usual staffing would be a few ED doctors + nurses

I've felt 10/10 pain, at least on a scale that medical staff would understand (because I would have said 100). It doesn't matter anymore what kind of injury you've sustained. All of it felt like I was being set on fire. Ever accidentally pinched a nerve for half a second? Make that feeling into the minutes and hours before they are able to/allowed to give you anesthetics. It is hell. I'd rather have a splitting migraine than have my cheek muscles torn open again.

I had to have hand surgery myself. My wound was from a cut but still, hand surgeons deserve every penny they get.
It actually crazy how they were able to get his hands back together. If you see the x-ray and his hands, his flesh is gone, tendons destroyed and bones misaligned and broken, but they were still able to get his hands back together and able to move. Great surgeons

Cheung is so incredible! Staying strong through the pain, not alerting family and potentially cause worry while actively going to surgery. I hope he's doing well today.

the only way to get over that fear is exposure to it. The amount of times I nearly fainted in nursing school is too much to count. Now I get all up and close in the gnarliest looking wounds!

this is why it's vital to have all walks of life working in hospitals. having them mandarin speakers there for him was a golden ticket, imagine being in there and not understanding an ounce of English, it would be terrifying
Nobody out here mentioning the amazing first aiders at the abertoir who saved his hand by doing a great job in cleaning and dressing the hand.
They didn’t. The Air Ambulance Paramedic actually said ‘the first ambo crews on scene washed it out and dressed it’

Thats not exactly true, but yes there were many great scientist that was also christian, but considering in those places at that time the only game in town was basicly christianity, therefore you only had two choice, be a christian, or get killed, bringing that up as at least disingenious. @@infamoussoapconsumer3870 to be honest unlike things like twitter and tiktok you have an idea of what you can see and in this video they go through what’s happened and you get a long warning of what is happening. It’s more than half the video until they remove the bandage. Yes a trigger warning would be the most helpful and if anyone went off at this channel for gore or something... I don’t like to say it but it’s kinda their fault they had loads of warning- not straight up, but long enough.

I don’t know this man but I’m incredibly thankful there were people there who spoke mandarin and were able to talk to him hopefully it made the entire process a little easier to get through knowing your needs were met, the world needs more languages in our hospitals!!

Very much so. I wouldn't even have the courage to imagine my finger going through that much of a strain, let alone struggle through in the same room. They all deserve massive amounts of credit.

@@Glorhbb yes he had a translator for when he was being spoken to, but every other time (like for instance, the doctors talking to each other,) he had no translation
The scariest thing about this is how long it takes. I realize it needs to be done properly, but imagine lying there and they are telling you with translators "So you have a severe hand injury..". I think he knows that by that point.
I don't know... I think it's still important to have a professional explain what's going on. After such an accident, the patient is almost certainly in a state of shock and might not fully realize what's going on. He knows his hand hurts like hell, but he doesn't know he's very close to losing his hand.

Regardless of what he knows, it's a Doctor/Surgeon's responsibility to make him fully aware of the current situation and post-operative risks. It's best to assume nothing. In some cases it's required for the patient or the accompanying guardian (if any) to acknowledge it on paper. Doctors do that even when the patient is another Doctor as well. That way things are legally sorted should the surgery throw in some surprise.
In instances of horrific injuries, a lot of the time people and animals can do things on and with things that look like lumps of hamburger (yay! Adrenaline!!!) And have no idea they've just run across a freeway with 2 broken legs a broken a
Ankle a broken and a fractured pelvis (someone I know did this post MVA) ...so yes, doctors do need to fill in what s happened to them, what injuries are known, what's suspected and what they're concerned about... plus some in a state of distress might not be processing information clearly so repeating things and making sure the patient understands is important.

I had a crush injury 4 yrs ago with my right hand..Similar damage to the metacarpal bones in the hand. 3 operations and 3 yrs of physio later it still pains me. ( to tears at times )
I have nothing but admiration and my gratitude for all the NHS staff in C+W Hospital in London, ( and around the world ) that saved my right hand.

Wow. I was in their in 2002 after cutting my arm with a chainsaw. Had a 12 hours microsurgery op, then 2 physios for about 6 months. lost feeling below by elbow apart from down little finger and down half the ring finger.
The staff all of them, apart from 1 nurse, where outstanding. They saved my arm.
Only bad thing was they kept telling me it might get better. it didnt.
Hope your doing good now and count your blessings.
I love that these doctors have multiple people who speak mandarin. I love how much the head surgeon continuously checked in with the patient for his comfort. I love that the initial first aid team on the work site had done such a good job stopping the blood, and dressing the wound that the EMTS didn't have to change a thing. I have so much respect for health care workers who do this much and care this much for every patient.
They get a lot of Chinese tourists who speak mandarin in Australia. I watch bondi beach

Absolutely amazing that his hand survived the injury! He was moving his fingers and the tissue looked really good! The surgeon did an awesome job!

@@aydriano from their comments i understood, that if the hand was completely cut off, it would have been easier to reattach it. In his case the hand and bones were crushed, which made the surgery harder.
How are those doctors able to look and touch that hand. I got goosebumps all over when they removed the bandage and turned away...
