I got to meet David at an Anaheim 1 race and he was the nicest guy. My cousin had tragic racing accident and I told David about it and he said, “Give me his name and number and I’ll call him to try to help him out with the emotions he’s going through!”
I will never ever forget that!

Remember it well also. I was stationed in Lemoore and raced there myself on an 86 250. Congrats to him to overcome such a setback.

What exactly happened ? Big jump ?

    • @heartfanjim01
      @heartfanjim01 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

He tried to double a jump coming out of a corner. He said Johnny O told him not to try it. He said he was riding with so much confidence that he tried it anyway. He didn't make it and went over the bars and the bike landed on his back. Ths really sad thing is he wasn't even going to ride that day. He woke up and and changed his mind.

Man, from the mid to late 80's I was obsessed with motocross (graduated from an '85 KD 80 to an '88 KX 250). My favorite riders were Jeff Ward and Ron Lechien but, I loved David Bailey too. The '86 Motocross Des Nations was awesome with him, O'Mara and RJ. And who could forget about the epic battle between him and RJ in the '86 season opener at Anaheim. I still have that on VHS.😁 I was devastated when he got paralyzed. Definitely a Motocross/Supercross legend. RIP Carlsbad Raceway. Thank you for all the wonderful moments on American Sports Cavalcade.

I raced Carlsbad back in 86 87 88 and those guys were there often , even on the off weekends , RJ n Glover would duel to the bitter end. No one beats RJ there. Lechien was one of my favs too he partied and still won.

Yep never forget that either, news didn’t travel like it does now and I only got news through MXA etc back then, but first for me was Hannah in 79, though I was a bit young at the time to understand the ramifications, but by 83 when he joined Honda and David Bailey I understood more but then he got used in 83 and very similar circumstances (what’d have been greatest comeback ever) it is kinda freaky the 83 version of Hannah and then DB in 87 the.similarities are frisky in thinking at the time and the events leading to it, the outcome different physically, then of course Ricks while different just as career ending.
But for a rider like DB to suffer an injury like that shocked everyone, it what I remember most, he was the last rider you’d expect, not to crash everyone crash’s but not like that with that outcome, but amazing champion to overcome that, followed his interviews on that, can only imagine,
I broke my neck, suffered a severe head injury, hangman’s fracture to my neck, similar to Christopher Reeves but had a different outcome, but 3 years of hard hard work, still deal with it everyday, 50% neck movement headaches, lots of loss, friends and family, ya find out allot about people during those times.
But DB especially and George’s Jobe who broke his neck at a similar time as me but really inspired and helped me through those times, ya never really get over it, but ya move forward and I ride again today which I am thankful for, I miss David most on commentary he was one of the best ever imo, his insights and overall commentary is a big loss today imo.
Great to see this vid, we need more of this, I know we get some on WTS, but this is just a nice addition to that and a little bit different. 🤙

VOD of the year! was a big fan of all the top guys in this era, it was hard to even have a favourite rider, all legends even at the time, DB was one of the best 500 riders ever! But there were so many 500 legends back then! sick bike can’t wait to see it on the track either, can see his passion and feelings for that bike, also true Honda colors best Honda red and blue seat, always be true Honda colours to me! Maggoria was a masterclass from all 3 riders that year as well and what a track. ai though tick won Carlsbad in 82 or 83 on Yamaha, for him and Broc it was a local track wasn’t it?
Also very interesting bit of info DB shared re a,ways having a 125!!
To keep up aggression and maintain momentum! I did not know he did that.
It’s something I have subscribed to all my riding life and tried to get across to kids and other riders, sometimes successfully but modern 4t and this easier is better culture makes it hard and has held back riders potential, so am even more in awe of him re that, shouldn’t be surprised because I would follow anything his Dad put out and he was the technical coaching guru during that era and imo still is.
Always said if you can ride a 125 properly and there is a difference even at pro level, few cracked the code, you could ride anything well, allot of 500cc riders were great 125 riders and National or World Champions! Top peace of info right here people from one of the best 500 riders ever.
Anyways awesome interview and look forward to seeing this bike i. anger at the track, bring some extra clean pairs of jocks Ping, ya might need em!

David is way too humble. My wife and I went to see the 500 National at Six Flags Georgia in the mid 80s and Bailey destroyed Glover on the YZ. David was the smoothest rider I've ever seen. Is that the race when Glover said, "That thing has way too much power!" to David on his factory CR? Anyway, the glory days of American MX. McGoo won Carlsbad in '82. It was also awesome.

That replica is cool 8t has the gold rims and 86 seat so it looks like an 86. The 85 was brutal power the 86 was more smoothed out.
