The top guys were gods to me. Every time I raced I thought this is fast as anyone could go. I was a so slow compared to these guys. I was slow compared to a lot of guys. But racing for 6th in the Nov class is still racing. You tube is awesome having these old videos and the mxon videos.

The era of when tracks were built to give riders problems rather than making them look stylish. I'm thinking a modern rider would have a very tough time finding any rhythm on this tough Daytona track.

Absolutely true! I remember getting to lap a supercross track on an amateur day (Seattle), I could barely ride it! It was more like one of those hard enduros than a modern race track. And outdoor racing used to get brutal! Second motos were always killers as the track deteriorated. Tracks weren’t groomed between motos...whoops formed naturally, as did ruts and stutter bumps from braking into corners. Now days it’s more like supermotard, all smooth, with “sections of obstacles”. I know,it’s faster and probably much less harsh on the body, but I miss the violence and outright brutality of the two-stroke era. Just being a MX racer in the 70’s and 80’s was impressive, it meant you were tough and fit.

@@stujones3566 All the kids in my neighborhood that rode talked trash against my Honda. Everyone had KX's. At the lake house where we would go ride some weekends all the guys owned RM 80's. I constantly was fighting the battle who had the best bike as i was always the one guy. My other friend had 84 YZ80. My CR got stollen so i sooned joined the kawi ranks with a 84 and then 85 KX 80. Then back in 1986 to the CR125 and raced locally.

I love how EVERY race announcer (Huffman included) of the 1980’s were compelled to announce MX as the “second most physically demanding sport...next to,soccer” 😂 just invariably! I wish there were more video of Hannah’s career...I would especially love to see and hear video of his famed 1976 National 125 season❤️

Why did the announcer say these pro riders are making two hundred to two hundred and fifty thousand? These guys like Hannah, Bailey, Johnson were making millions each year. $250 grand was chicken feed to what they really made. Also 65 70 mph, I can’t see them actually getting up to that speed. Also Hanna’s weight was not 135 pounds, he was at least 150.

I always equate the Hurricane with his long association with Yamaha. I thought him a traitor when he went to Honda. Bike/factory loyalties can run deep! I've always favored Yamaha, especially the 2 stroke GP Road racers, and King Kenny Roberts.

I remember that day - I think that was Hannah's first year on the Honda?? after leaving Yamaha because quote "The Yamaha was a pile of shit" - I remember watching a Bob Hannah interview years later explaining that he took a 200,000$ pay cut because it wasn't about the money- he was sick of Yamaha's lack of development and the Yamaha being 25 lbs heavier than the Honda and Yamaha telling Bob and Glover that the reason they weren't winning was because they were "out of SHAPE??"

I have been a fan of THE HURRICANE since 1977.
Dirtbike magazine and Motocross Action magazines reported everything on the sport.
I got to see Bob Hannah race at the Kingdome in Seattle in 1979.
My only chance to witness the hurricane at his peak.
Bob is as cocky and outspoken as anybody could ever be.
He backs that up with reputation.
      He lapped everybody.
He stopped on top of the biggest jump on the course and waved everybody by him.
Then he caught up with everybody and won the race.
Bob attained everything he had on his own.
The majority of other riders did not like Bob.
      They feared Bob.
Trash talkin. Bragging. Laughing. Mocking. WINNING.
Yes, he had a factory bike.
Yes, he got financed by Yamaha.
Yes, the camera and the microphones were always on him.
But Bob Hannah earned all of that by riding faster, harder, and HANGING ON!
They rate Bob as the 26th most popular rider in supercross.
      That is UNDER RATED.
Bob Hannah is responsible for making supercross an arena sport that makes the factories and all of the suppliers billions.
They owe him a huge debt of gratitude.
