    Jerry West is so humble. He still holds the record for average points per game in a playoff series at 46, that's how great he was.

    Jerry West was one of my boyhood sports idols - Sandy Koufax was the other. West is a classy and successful individual and a great role model. The Lakers were fortunate to have him for as long as they did.

      The thumbs down might be for Dan Patrick for asking useless questions. Dan needed to ask good questions like:
      1. How do you know a player will be a star or a superstar?
      2. Who were some of the players that you drafted you thought were stars or superstars but were a bust.

    I have been listening to Jerry West interviews for about a month now What impresses
    Me is that he never speaks Ill of anyone, is incredibly smart and thoughtful. He also has a lot of demons he is dealing with from what I understand and doesn’t take it out on anyone. He is a true inspiration to me. Would love to just talk and listen to this man speak about anything.

  • @kjackson4

    Great player, just imagine if he played with a 3 point line...A great executive too, even though he GAVE the Lakers Pau Gasol!!!

    • @pebutts
      @pebutts 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They got Marc Gasol in return who is five years younger than Pau and has turned out to be just as good, if not better, for them, so it's hard to argue that the Grizzlies got robbed. What looked like a bad trade at the time turned out to be another Jerry West stroke of brilliance.

    • @pebutts
      @pebutts 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      West obviously already had a relationship with Mitch Kupchak so it definitely made the deal easier, but really the deal was a good one for both teams. The Grizzlies at the time of the trade were 13-33 and going nowhere. It was looking like Pau, whose contract would expire in two years, would move on in free agency. If you wait until the year his contract expires, other teams know you're under duress and won't give you a good deal. So West put together the best trade he could at the time, giving the Grizz some solid building blocks as well as cap room, and, of course, the Lakers the missing piece to a championship contender. He also sent Pau, who had been the lone bright spot for Memphis, to a place he knew would be a good fit.
      The Lakers already had what they thought was going to be their big man of the future in Andrew Bynum, making Marc Gasol, a very promising prospect, expendable. They also wanted to get rid of Kwame Brown and Memphis was happy to take him since his contract was expiring, giving them flexibility to make deals. They thought they were getting a terrific young guard prospect in Javaris Crittendon, who ended up being an idiot. Luckily, they traded him for a first round pick before he started racking up criminal convictions.
      Anyway, many of West's deals during his career seemed odd at the time, even if they turned out great in retrospect. I remember many journalists thinking he had lost it when he dealt Vlade Divac to the Hornets to draft a 18 year old high school player that most in the league thought would be a good NBA player at best. They thought he was even loonier when he shipped Anthony Peeler and George Lynch for basically nothing in order to free up room to just make an offer to Shaq without knowing for sure he'd take it. That's three starters for a high school kid and just the chance to sign O'Neal. Hell, I remember people thinking he was nuts for drafting Divac, way before European big men were in vogue. I've just seen too many of his moves turn out to be great to doubt him.

    • @kjackson4
      @kjackson4 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no DOUBTing his brilliance, but he gave the Lakers a gift. Kevin and Minnesota gave former teammate Danny Ainge and Boston Garnett so it happens. But a gift is a gift whether from a genius or a dummy!!!

  • @Mr.56Goldtop

    Jerry was great, a pure shooter, great defense and rebounder. But I'm not a fan of today's NBA. Run down shoot a 3, rebound, run down shoot a 3. No ball movement working for a good shot like it used to be and too much "entertaining" going on. This is not real basketball! It's good to hear Jerry voice his displeasure with the player (s) who passed up for sure points with lay ups in lieu of the dreaded 3 pointer, and missed.

  • @charleschavarria7523
    @charleschavarria7523 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2
