I love Wilt chamberlain stories. This is a legend speaking on a legend.
What I liked about Wilt was that he respected everybody. He was a very distinguished person, and he spoke to everyone with respect. Back in 77' we used to talk about his parking tickets, the ones I would put on his cream bently that he would park in front of the Mac B building out at UCLA, where I was a parking officer at the time. We ended up having many conversations because he was a great thinker, and he knew he was more than a great basketball player.

Wilt told me a story one time when he was at something and Bob Hope was there as well. and the people were fawning all over Bob Hope, and it mad him feel like he was being disrespected. Once while writing tickets by Hedrick Hall dormitory he pulled up on me, and pointed at his house up in Bel Air, and told me that some Arab guy offered him 15 million for it, and that he told the people no, he was not interested.
@@ronaldmurphy394 man, I would have loved to meet that guy. He always seemed like a really interesting, cool person. His Bel Air house was impressive. Was he as big in person as everyone says? You always hear how physically imposing and strong the dude was.
I was at a Philadelphia game in 1966 and went down to the floor when Wilt was sitting there before the game. I looked at his Shoes that he was putting on and asked him what size they were. His response was, "Why is that Boy, you want to buy me a pair"!
For those wondering, this happened in Wilt's last NBA season. He actually got 26 rebounds in that game against the Kings.
Wilt averaged 22.9 rebounds a game for his career. Wilt was different.

Free Throw must leave your hand before you cross the line of the free throw line (Wilt is known to have been able to DUNK from the free throw line with a 2-3 step start as a freshman in college - unknown if he could do it from a standing start AT the line but you were not required to BE at the line for the shot - just behind it).

The only major change I can remember from the MJ era was the Flagrant Foul rule growing teeth (after the 1990 Finals) - but that was more do to dirty players like Laimbeer, even if it DID help MJ indirectly.

Back in the 70's I drove a taxi for a short time when I first moved to L.A. Whenever we would drop someone off at LAX we would park in a holding area and wait our turn to pick up a passenger who had just landed. As I'm sitting there I notice this very large man who could be Wilt Chamberlain talking to a few of the other cab drivers. By the time I left ( about 45 minutes later) he was still talking to these cabbies. But not only talking, but you would have thought all of them were best friends. He was super friendly and sincere. I was very impressed with this man and how he engaged people.
I met Wilt at Santa Monica Beach playing volleyball. He was such great fun and nice to everybody.
i sat next to him at a tourney i Laguna Beach around the same time. i gave him a beer and said to be cool, as the cops sometimes waljed by. when he left, he turned and thanked me and shook my hand.

When I was an elementary school kid in the San Diego area of SoCal, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Elgin Baylor were household names. We'd pretended that we were them on the court to experience that sense of Lakers greatness. Even though we had the Elvin Hayes led Rockets back then, the Lakers were the team we rooted for! Enjoyed Jerry's accounts of Wilt. Thanks for sharing.
So Wilt wasn't just a legendary scorer and rebounder, he was also a legendary eater and drinker!
Elgin Baylor in his autobiography confirms Wilt's culinary appetite, too.

If Wilt had joined the Lakers in 1962, Russell would have maybe 4 or 5 rings, and Wilt would have at least that. Bill Russel was my favorite player in the 1960s, so I'm not showing Wilt any favortism. I'm old enough to remember the Lakers with the great Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. They took the Celtics to 7 games in the NBA finals several times, losing them all. Can you imagine prime Baylor, West, AND Chamberlain? My GOD, they'd be illegal!!!!

West was a great player overall, and really good in the clutch! I would compare him to Havlicek--even though John was a small forward...they both had that extra-spark of awareness on the court, and were so often the difference in a game.
My first and best sports hero.... I love this man. There's one item on my bucket list, shake the hand of Mr West.
Wilt was such a guy, but his strength and his running speed (like a 48 second 400) just blew my mind. Russell could also run a 48 second 400 but he was nowhere near as strong as Wilt.
Wilt and Russell were so good they could've qualified for the Olympics but turned pro instead.

@@ChessJourneyman48 seconds would have won heat 2 in the 1960 Olympics, and been competitive in the others. Olympic record going in was 45.9. So 48 was good for an untrained person at the time.
Wilt was also a NCAA Champ in the High Jump for Kansas. But A person who was even more accomplished than wilt in Sports....He won the Decathlon and Pentathlon in the same olympics was Jim Thorpe. He is not mentioned because of the DEI Agenda in sports today....as well as Society.
Watching old films of Wilt, racing down the court with those huge strides, just blowing past other players, is a freaky thing to see! He would sometimes play the guard position, just to show how versatile and quick he was.
How Kool was this!! West was the engineer of the Lakers and WILT was the Machine. Just keep WILT happy with food and you can get 180% production from him. WILT sounds like a fantastic man to know and laugh with. LOVE IT!!! :)
When people talk about the GOAT, they are speaking of normal human beings that played the game and are held in such regard. When you talk about Wilt Chamberlain he was in another league or shall we say category. His size, strength and athletic ability were outside the scope of normal human beings. No one will ever match or beat the NBA records he put up, not in a thousand years. Imagine averaging 50 points a game and 25 rebounds for an entire season; who does that?! No one to this day has come close.
No one else has averaged 50.

And he did this with a pretty good field goal percentage.
And of course, the rebounding. Russell was the only one close to him there, and Wilt beat him more often than not.

@@michaelalbertson7457 Wilt's 2 championship squads were greater than any of Russell's 11. Russell played the Auerbach system his whole career. It was so successful that his teammates Tom Heinsohn and KC Jones would coach the Celtics under Auerbach as team exec and still won championships. When you talk about Russell all you can talk about is championships. Wilt has championships and so much more on top of that.
Maybe the most impressive stat was that Wilt averaged 48.5 minutes a game one season. Wilt only missed 8 minutes of play the entire season. I can't imagine anyone ever accomplishing that.

The manager Jerry was talking about was Fred Schaus, who was Jerry's basketball coach at W. Virginia, then became Lakers coach, then GM.
Jerry West is a legend. Too bad the Lakers don't treat him that way anymore.
But the Clippers do treat him well... Jerry West says it's too late for him to reconcile with the Lakers. BTW: currently the Clippers have an 11 game winning streak over the Lakers. The Buss children have been detrimental to the Lakers.
The Lakers lost their luster long ago. I attended games during that 71-72 season, as well as during the Magic Johnson era and the Kobe/Shaq years as well. I about bled purple and gold. Now I mostly ignore sports altogether, but I will root for the Lakers to lose if I even think about them. Their current "superstar" has ruined it all for me, and I would rather have seen them lose to Miami a couple of years ago than see them tie the Celtics for most all-time NBA Championships with that clown on the team. Jeannie Buss has failed her father's legacy, sadly. Outside of that one season, they have been a disaster. The days of West, Goodrich, Chamberlain, Baylor and the later dynasty teams were different. I'm glad I experienced those times. I've nothing good to say about today's NBA.

I enjoyed listening to this. Jerry West was a great player. If the Celtics had not been so good or the Lakers had a bit more help he would have won 4 championships maybe.
My uncle met him in the late 1970"s. At some basketball tournament. My uncle could hit 100 free throws in a row. He was the man.

@@paulstone3590 In the original free agency (in the seventies), teams were to be compensated for their loss. Part of the compensation for Gail Goodrich signing with the New Orleans Jazz was the Lakers receiving the Jazz's draft pick, that was used to select Magic. With no free agency, imagine LeBron in Cleveland his full career, without his leaving that resulted in the picks used Irving and the pick Wiggins traded for Love. He would probably have a similar career as West. Good enough to force his way into the Finals, only to lose to a better team.
@@derrickdubose9171 Absolutely correct. Players in 1960s and 1970s got the short end of the stick. Not only in teammates but pay. The owners reaped the bulk of the profits. Sad for the players. But one good thing was the basketball was better. Team focused. The players had to do what they were told or else. So fans got better entertainment.

1970 for me .I was in 1st grade.
I was lucky enough to see the Lakers play their away game on ktla5 with Chick Hearn and to this day you can't 3 finer people associated in an organization announcing and playing the game. Wilt, West and Chick

certain celebrities should be considered national treasures and i think jerry west and dolly parton should be at the top of the list. their classiness and what they have contributed to their respective fields is beyond comprehension.
I was 15 years old playing BB in a Sunday night league at our local YWCA in Atlantic City. We played a team from Olyny part of Philadelphia. I was selected to jump center against Wilt. I was 5’10”. When he jumped, I stayed on the ground. We lost.
Just think if Wilt, Jerry, Elgin would have played 5 - 10 years.

I was at the USA vs USSR track and field meet , University Of California Berkeley , beautiful campus, Redwood saplings all around , thought I saw one moving , it was Wilt ...
100points in a game then top 20 points ever scored he has 12 of the 20 ! Never fouled out of a game record for rebounds 1 game like 55 ! He is the goat in his era!
You also can't forget Cale Sanderson....A four time NCAA wrestling champ who never lost a match....or Rocky Marciano "who never lost" You just can't mention them among the GOAT because of their color. Throw in Emile Zatopek...the only man to win the 5,000, 10,000 and Marathon in the same Olympics...That would upset the Kenyan Dominance Theory.

And this is why you can only say about any truly great player, that they are the best "of their era"!...It is true of other fields of endeavor as well. Time, and place, mean a lot...Wilt, IMO, would still be a star player nowadays...but the competition he would face today is just even better than in his era. No matter...it is all about time and place.

I had a crazy physical job when I was about 26. I had to eat like 5-6k calories a day to keep up. I dont even wanna think about how much food somebody like wilt would need on a daily basis while being a professional athlete. And I am only 6 feet tall and weighed around 190 then
The 7up story is true, Chamberlain said it. I have to think when he got to pro volleyball he learned more about nutrition and fitness as he was much more fit and trim compared to his later basketball years.

And what the press will not mention that one time in L.A. back in the 80's Wilt was walking near the beach one night when a Crip Gang Member pulled a gun on him. Wilt managed to get the gun away...throw it into the ocean...He backhanded the crip in the face....Booted him in the ass so hard that the crip fell down and stayed there for a few minutes. Wilt then yanked off his blue do rag and told him if he ever saw him again he would punk him out till he cried and begged for mercy. That gang member later was confirmed to have quite the crips and got his degree in public service.

I'd say the NYC to SF is doable in that amount of time if Wilt was driving. He's known for driving 170 mph+ I believe he did it.

Unfortunately only one out of every ten games Wilt played is on tape. This means 90% of his career is only captured in the memories of those who saw him play. So as awesome as the highlights of his various dunks, blocks, rebounds and hustle appear, most of his career is unrecorded.
Ah wilt was wilt with his stories.. But on the court nobody could deal with his raw strength.. Wilt was amazing and no one since can compare..I enjoyed Wilt a whole lot all the time.. bs or whatever.. his court records are the best..

Wilt had is own sports car made for his personal use that could drive 180- 200 mph, he also had a RollsRoyce that had a top speed of 112 miles an hour?
The RollsRoyce would probably take about 30 hours or less to make New york to San Francisco but his sports car at 130 mph could make the trip in 23 hours?
So Wilt was arguably on the mark on the trip, he also suffered from a sleep disorder and didn't eat for days and spent much of his time at a night club he owned.
What do you do when you cannot sleep, well according to Wilt he either drove nearly 3000 miles or found female companionship and he got very few complaints from his car or women, except from the media?

The current record is 25 hours and change, at 110 MPH average.
Wilt did NOT make that run in 23 hours though, as the Interstate Highway System mostly DID NOT EXIST and had a lot of gaps when Wilt would have been doing that drive - and there's no way he could average 100 MPH even driving largely on US Highways instead.
7 days on the other hand is ALSO bull - I've driven 2000 miles in an E250 in less than 3 days, so figure 5 AT MOST for the full distance - and that was WITH SLEEP STOPS every night and close to 4000 pounds of stuff in the back.

Statistically wilts 100 point game occurred when everything came together perfectly (look at the games before hand 80 attempts? 50.4 points a game ) and prior to the recent attempts to cross the continent by fast car, if you have the (80 plus attempts) could lead to the perfect opportunity, absolute good weather and the less 'radar speed technology' its Statistically possible to do the journey in 23 hours?

Can't do it anymore... but. Some young healthy men who are athletic, can eat ENORMOUS amounts of food. I was one of those men. There are plenty of others, just ask around, and you will meet some.

Bill Russell could actually eat more than Wilt could but chose not to. He would make his team mates better eaters and the team would finish the whole meal together. That food would have gone to waste if not for the intangibles of Bill. He would have made Jerry eat more than a little slice of brisket sandwich. Wilt was a selfish eater for finishing all the food by himself. That's why Bill threw up before each game. Not because of nerves. He ate too much the day before.

I love Wilt but he just didn't win as much as he was supposed to. Its hard to consider him the goat especially considering his athletic prowess. A guy that can score 100 point should have 2 to 3 rings the fact he has so many broken records and only 1 ring to me speaks volumes of how much his play style didn't amount to winning

Wilt has two rings, and is the only one who beat 60's Celtics at the time of no free agency, this was something Baylor, West or Robertson never managed.
It's a bit like LeBron going against 2017 Warriors for the best part of his career. There is only so much one player can do, basketball is a team sport.
