  • Set high on a cliff above a forbidding, lunar-like landscape, the ancient fortress of Masada looks as dramatic as the legend behind it.

    Masada was built as a palace complex under Judean king Herod the Great, who reigned from 37 B.C. to 4 A.D. With a sophisticated water collection system that allowed it to sustain a thousand people in the isolated desert location, the complex was an engineering achievement as well as a classic example of the architecture of the early Roman Empire. But its greater significance is the symbolism it carries because of the legend associated with it.

    Looking at the surrounding area, it's a wonder that the Romans managed to create a sustainable water collection system that could feed the entire population. Hopefully I will be able to visit this site one day. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.

      the Roman empire was just starting at this point (27bc) and the land here is more arid today

      It was created by the Jews not the Romans, it's more of a wonder how the Romans captured it. You can visit the site, it's 100% open to the public, although it costs money. There are three ways up (and down) and the way you go up determines when you should arrive

      Alexander Santiago They probably didn't do that. I don't think they had the guts or intelligence to do that at the time. I'm sure a simple Google search will tell us how they got water there

    This video was poorly made. Instead of featuring the various tourist amenities, it would have been better to expound on the "sophisticated water collection system," who Herod was (was he the same one who sentenced Jesus to death?), and why the fortress was abandoned.

    Its called Palestine!!

    • @enternamehere7639
      @enternamehere7639 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Shehab Saed Technically it's called Judea- Samaria. Palestine is the Roman name for the land between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea, and the Romans no longer control the area. By calling it Palestine, we should also call New York, New Amsterdam.

    • @3DShihab
      @3DShihab 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Enter Name Here Thats what was shared by the same channel you are watching back in 1948 if I remember correctly. We know what we are talking about. Its. Called. Palestine.

    • @enternamehere7639
      @enternamehere7639 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Shehab Saed No, Palestine is simply the name given to the area not to any country, it's like saying "it's called the British Isles" on a video about Ireland, or Scotland, or saying "it's called the Arabain Peninsula' on a video about the UAE. You can also say 'its called the Levant, or the Middle East" if you say "it's called Palestine". By saying it's called Palestine, you are calling it by the geographic name, so by the same logic you can call it Israel Judea-Samaria (the original geographic name, named after the kingdoms, before the Romans took it) Levant, the Middle East or any other geographic name. Palestine is a geographic name.

    • @MickeyHarp
      @MickeyHarp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t really think you can call it the British Isles anymore either if you are including Ireland in that. Not after 1922 anyhoo

    • @enternamehere7639
      @enternamehere7639 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MickeyHarp The British Isles is the geographic name of the islands there, but you are right, If I call Ireland the British isles I'll probably get beat up

      The land was conquered by another nation, get over it. What if I were to tell you that Istanbul is actually called Constantinople? Palestine isn't the first place to be conquered and renamed by another nation, and it won't be the last.
