How I Got Rid Of Pigmentation / Melasma | Shonagh Scott

  • Here is my experience on how I got rid of my pigmentation/melasma/hyperpigmentation. Dark spots are often caused by sun damage, the skin produces too much melanin and you are left with dark spots that only get worse when you're in the sun. In order to remove these dark spots/patches, you require a specific laser treatment. I had 3 laser sessions of PicoSure at the Pulse Light Clinic in Bank, London, which worked brilliantly. I also took their advice and tried the Obagi products to suppress my melasma - watch the tutorial for details on the laser used, the fees and my overall experience.

    Use a mask with yogurt, rice flour and milk ! It will remove the melasma. 3 to 4 times a week for 15 minutes, no need for lasers and chemical peels, i tried all those and it would not work and since using this mask at the beginning for 3 to 4 times a week and now i use it once a week. Also the potato peels help.

    For those who cannot do laser for various reasons, I have found that the Kiehls dark spot correction serum does a pretty good job of at least fading spots I get from the sun and pregnancy. I have them in the same locations on my face, as well as one spot on my nose. I usually apply directly after sun exposure, and I notice a difference for sure.
    For the record, I've been on Accutane (as a teen) and every strength of retinol that can be prescribed. Accutane definitely cleared my acne...and left me depressed (please familiarise yourself with side effects if you're considering it)...but retinol did absolutely nothing for my skin in terms of pigment, texture, acne, etc. I didn't flake like you, but I honestly didn't ever notice a single improvement.

    I have been using the obagi hydroquinone and tretinoin (same as you) Both worked great for me, cleared up acne, some scarring but only some of the melasma, skin does looks better though. Only issue is, when I stopped the HQ as you’re not suppose to use it for more than 4 months, the melasma seemed to start getting dark again, think it’s because HQ supresses the melasma and does not remove it..so looking into laser, but it’s so expensive!! I love seeing this! It’s really important to use sunscreen with broad spectrum. Dermatologists recommend using 2 separate brands (do your research. I’ve read not to combine avobenzone with zinc.). American brands do not have good UVA and are harsh. I use La Roche-Posay mineral 50. Then I use either a Korean or Japanese brand. I also use a BB cream with 45 spf (dr. Jart and whoa it has ingredients that also help my skin). Also the “Korean Method” has really changed my skin and using CosRX snail mucin has not only helped my hyperpigmentation but fades my burn scars (I live in a mini apt and I iron on the floor, plus weirdly will also burn the inside of my arms while cooking! I used to have the burn marks for over a year but not anymore).
    Peeling your skin really really helps acne scars and hyperpigmentation. I do peels as they can be much cheaper than lasers but you do have to do a patch test. Most of us into peels do the stronger ones from late fall to early spring and switch to lighter no downtime peels after that.
    I do wear sunscreen 365 days a year. I’ve been doing it for most of my adult life (but damn I’m fighting to remove a hyperpigmentation mask I got while traveling in Europe with not great sunscreens, walking out in the sun wo a hat in my 20’s! It’s slow wo lasers but doable. Fastest method has been TCA peels. ). Thanks for showing us your results!

      @ShonaghScott  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you’ll get darkening of the skin until it peels which is usually around 10 days. You’ll find that one you’ll be washing your face and the dark patches will just come away leaving much lighter skin behind.

    • @Snowflakera1
      @Snowflakera1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't advise any chemical peels / laser treatments for dark skin - it's too risky (although please note, I'm Fitzpatrick 6). A skin clinic in the UK destroyed my skin that way. Their "light" skin peel turned my minor pigmentation issue into a severe one.
      After that happened - I paid for a dermatologist & she advised me to stick to using skin creams (she recommended the Eucerin anti-pigment line, and it works well for my skin). I could see differences after just a few weeks of using it. The pigmentation is clearing up slowly - but it is still clearing up which is the main thing.

      I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of that laser - I’m pleased I had mine done when I did, and having been religious with wearing a hat on sunny days and wearing my high SPF I’ve managed to keep it under control. Using the right skincare will work wonders too.

I don’t know how it works in England but here in the US my dermatologist offers Hydroquinone on its own, in a couple of strengths, as well as Hydroquinone mixed with Retin A at different strengths. Obagi is waaaaay more expensive than what I can get from my Doctor. You will have to be diligent with sunscreen, and wearing a hat in the sun, or it will come back. If you have pigmentation and you can’t afford laser then you need to try Tretinoin and Hydroquinone - you can order it through Dermatica, you upload some photos of your face and they will write you a prescription. The first month you only pay for the postage (£2.90), the second month you can get 25% off with my referral code: www.dermatica.co.uk/referrer/MNGS
      Hope that helps!

      @ShonaghScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’ll always come back in the Sun and with hormone changes, but it’s about maintaining the pigment so it doesn’t build up. The more if builds up the harder it becomes to remove. So I plan to have it lasered once a year as we hit winter so it removes the surface layer ready for when it returns a bit during the summer (it was much less last Summer since I kept my face out of the Sun) so each time it returns my skin to being more or less pigment free!

    Do you feel that if you get sun on your body and not your face, the melasma still gets worse?? For example, can I go out in a swimsuit and tan my body if my face is completely covered with hat and sunscreen? Ive heard that getting sun anywhere on your body, even if your face is covered, can still worsen melasma

    • @ShonaghScott
      @ShonaghScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a bizarre one Emmi, I am able to go out and wear a hat and get sun on my body and my face doesn’t worsen, whereas my twin can’t. Even with a hat on her face seems to get worse 🤷🏼‍♀️
      So I think it’s literally down to the individual - but what I will say, Callie has never used Hydroquinone like I have, so maybe that’s the difference? The Hydroquinone suppressed the melasma from coming out so I think that really helps! Look up Dermatica, they do monthly prescriptions of Tretinoin and Hydroquinone pre-mixed in a tube to take away the need to layer products and they monitor your progress with photos. After the first month they up your dosage of Tret and it’s extremely affordable compared to the Obagi. I paid £400! This is only £20 a month, the first month is free and if you get a referral code (I have one if you need it) you get £5 off the following month too so it’s a no brainer compared to shelling out on obagi. Wish I’d known about it beforehand haha!!

      @@ShonaghScott thank you so much for replying!! I use hydroquinone 4% and tretinoin 0.1%, it is covered by my insurance here in the states so i pay around $80 every 4 months. I’m really not sure if getting sun on my body is making it worse or not, i feel like it might be but who knows. I just went on vacation to Arizona and it totally flared up even though i consistently wore a hat and heavy mineral sunscreen all over my face. So frustrating. I’m glad you are able to go out and get sun on your body and have your melasma remain calm!! Thanks again for responding :)

    • @ShonaghScott
      @ShonaghScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I mentioned in my video, you need to suppress your melasma or it will always return. Last year at the end of summer I had a few more laser treatments as it had darkened from the sun, but this Summer I religiously wore a hat and it didn’t get any worse so as long as you’re not exposing it to the sun and you use a suppressant for control if hormones change then it should majorly help!!! Mines been great! You can see in my videos. I have a faint shadow of it which is where I was at after I finished my lasering.

    Great video! Nice to see a london based video! I went to Pulse Light also last year for my melasma..was worried about the laser making it worse, so the doctor there prescribed Obagi hydroquinone and the tretinoin 005% also. Yes super expensive🙈 It did fade the dark spots, but your not suppose to use it for more than 5 months, so when I stopped it all came back! I restarted it again 2 months ago but I couldn’t pay out for Obagi again..so after a lot of research I found an online dermotologist group based in London called Dermatica. For £20 each month they send me hydroquinone and tretinoin. Been using it for two months now...worth having a look! But your results are amazing, I may have a look at laser again:)

    • @ShonaghScott
      @ShonaghScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve used the same from Dermatica. I swapped from Obagi when I did a second course but I’ve given the creams up now. I’ve been back to the clinic for two rounds of laser after each summer (first as seen in the this video) and it works better for me than the cream. As mentioned in the video, you can’t cure Melasma but you can maintain it. It’ll always come back but what you don’t want is the build up. It needs tackling to remove the surface layer so each year I’ll get it lasered to maintain the surface of my skin so it won’t ever worsen. It looks so much better now than when I left it all that time ago. Now I can deal with a bit of pigmentations by the end of the summer as I know I’ll have it lasered again by the winter.

And all bad reviews talk about rushed and pushy sales person as well as lack of customer service or satisfaction with results..

      @ShonaghScott  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Luiza, Pulse Light Clinic asked if they could use my review, I said of course! If you're new to my channel then you won't know but I'm very transparent about sponsorships. If I've been paid to talk about a product or experience I always tell you either at the beginning of the video or before I'm about to share the sponsored section. It will also be in the title and usually on-screen.
      I believe it's extremely important that viewers aren't sold all and sundry for short term pennies. My channels integrity is more important to me, I want my viewers to be able to trust what I'm sharing.
      Also, I believe the photos speak for themselves in regards to my experience - even IF it was sponsored (which it is NOT) it doesn't take away from the fact that the laser did in fact remove my pigmentation.
      Sadly, there is no cure for Melasma so it will come back but I can manage it with lasering once a year to remove the visible darkness and treat it with a suppressant. My experience with the Pulse Light Clinic has been nothing but pleasant, but it's the same as holiday reviews - one person will have completely enjoyed the hotel and customer service, others will experience the exact same service but complain. It's how it's perceived by the individual.

    I’m not sure what to do. I had IPL treatment about a year ago (my third) at my dermatologist’s office. But this time I got severely burned by the laser. They told me is was because I was on BCP. It brought out melasma on my forehead, nose and cheeks (that I never had before). They put me on prescription bleaching creams and pills. Nothing seems to be helping. It’s so depressing. Wouldn’t be so bad, but the pattern it makes on my nose makes me look like I am peeling all the time. Kids ask me what the dark lines on my face are :’( Wonder if this is different than the laser that they used for the IPL and wonder if it will help me.

      @@ABC-rf9op it has gotten a little lighter, but, no, it's still there. I'm going to Korea in a week, so I am going to speak to a dermatologist there.

    can't afford to have laser treatment done. Cosmetic firms profit off sun damaged victims. I went to the doctor and she offered me no products.
