Don't feel pressured to know everything at once and continue to adapt along the way. I adopted in the beginning of the year and was overwhelmed, but gradually learned more about feline health and adopted 2 more times this year.
Interesting tip about how to weigh! I have a little cardboard tray that canned food was packaged in and the weight of this tray is negligible. She loves to lie in the tray so I will try it with our digital glass scale and see if it works. It worked! I placed the cardboard tray on top of the scale and I placed Vita inside the cardboard box. She weighs 11.6 pounds! She put on about 1.5 pounds over the last 6 years. I am not really concerned about weight gain. My main concern is hydration. She doesn’t seem to consume all that much in a day. She doesn’t eat the entire contents of the cans. Calories would be hard to count. I do measure how much she eats by measuring the food before and after, using a digital kitchen scale.
I've found this is the easiest way to weigh cats since they already love boxes lol glad it worked! Please remind me, does she eat wet only or does she also eat dry?
@@jesscaticles She eats a very small amount of dry. Open Farm Pet wild caught salmon, ethically sourced. I only offer it when she has sufficient amount of wet in a 24 hour period.
I give a good amount of wet food that she loves and then I leave a good quality dry food out. She doesn’t like the dry much but she will pick away at it. She was a rescue and needs to put some weight on so I don’t mind leaving the dry food for her to free feed on. And then I know she is getting enough to eat. My last two cats were not fat and were free feeders except for when they couldn’t eat dry anymore. Then I just put a certain amount of wet out and usually take up what wasnt eaten if any and turfed it before the next feeding. After awhile you can judge how much to put out to pretty closely match their needs. If this cat doesn’t get fat I will be giving her wet food twice a day, the portion sized package, and leaving her to free feed on dry. I never want her to feel real hunger again in her life.
Viva Raw's calculator estimated that my 8 month Ragdoll be fed 12 oz/day and my 7 month old Siamese 9 oz/day because they are both highly active. Does this number seem too high? I feed them their Complete Rabbit, Turkey and Duck. I also give them Steve's Real Food Frozen Pork and Freeze-dried with Primal Pet Bone broth (as a topper, they do not eat it if it is rehydrated.) We are transitioning to twice a day but still currently at 3 meals.
online rodent feed site for pinkies is expensive. Ground is cheaper, but chicken ground is less. Do you feed less ground up mouse than ground up chicken? I’m transitioning my cat’s second meal from dry to wet and I am confused about much to give him of each type of food. The recommended amount for the dry food is 1/2 cup a day so I give him 1/4 cup in the morning and am transitioning the other 1/4 cup to wet. But it seems like a lot to give him a whole can of wet food in place of the 1/4 cup dry food? I’ve been transitioning slowly but I guess I’m confused about what the end goal amount is for his wet food meal. I want to transition his dry food to freeze dried eventually too but I’m waiting until after the current transition.
Basically, you would slowly remove some dry and replace it with equal parts wet each day. You would not start off with a full can of wet food. It would be 95% dry and 5% wet. For that meal you feed 2 ounces. So 1.9 ounces dry (95%) and 0.1 ounce wet (5%). Day 2 you would do a 90/10 split, day 3 85/15 split and so on. And the morning meal would remain at 1/4 cup dry until the second meal is 100% wet. You can create a google sheet or excel sheet with formulas to do the math for you. Does that make sense?

@@laurenreinholtz1945 Yes that makes sense. You will have to look on the can to see what is recommended. And then balance it out that way. You may end up feeding a little more during the transition but that's ok.
So I’ve been feeding my cats canned food. They are both about 9lbs. I’ve bought the small 3 ounce cans (sometimes it’s a 2.7 ounce can) twice a day. Vet said this is good. Sry but I’m not good with math & couldn’t catch on according to this video am I giving them appropriate amounts. One difficult thing with canned is that 3 ounces is as bout as small of servings as you can get & a third midday serving would probably be too much. I’ve been feeding @ 9 in the morning & 9 @ night
Every cat is individual so there is no magic number. You have to use body condition score, their weight, and the food label. Then adjust as needed. Sorry but I can't do it for you!

But with the addition of more liquids water with diluted milk seems to have settled some of these problems. Or is the attempt at diversity the issue. I try to mix bags and brands when feeding.

I mean my cat is OBSESSED with her food but I feed her .5 oz Tiki cat wet food, 1/5 cup dry kibble, a quail egg and 5 instinct raw toppers all twice a day. I feed my dogs and cats a raw diet, have been doing it for 15 years. The problem I'm having is I have one cat that is obese. She was obese when I got her from the Humane Society and she still is. I feed her about 3 ounces of food a day. But I'm beginning to think even that is too much. I can't get her to lose weight. I've had blood work done and the vet says that she is not diabetic and does not have thyroid issues. Do you think I should cut it down to 2 ounces a day or even less? I feed two meals a day to my cats. I have never had an animal that I could not easily controlled her weight especially with a raw diet. But this one has me stumped.
To be honest, I'm more uncertain after watching than I was before. It's not just different sources citing entirely different calorie requirements, but pretty much none of the pet food has calories listed... What a wild west...
I found my cats had digestion problems with dry cat food, common brands on the cheap. I tried diversity in brands and types, but still caused upset,' in the litter". So I started feeding milk, mixed down 50-50 in water once a day or 25-75 milk to water. Most the problems have seemed to go away, but is this healthy over a prolonged period of time? Or is a couple times a week ok? But the uptake of liquids has at least doubled if not tripled of my cats,but is it helping?
Most cats are lactose-sensitive so milk is generally not recommended. Consider getting a water fountain for their drinking needs since cats tend to consume more water when it’s running and not still
You could just put the box on the scale hit the "tare" button which will zero it out then put the cat in the box and you will only have the cats weight.

Congrats on your new baby! Kittens should eat as much food as required by their adult projected weight. So he may not weigh 10 lbs now, but perhaps his adult projected weight is 10 lbs. So you would feed him as much food as required by a 10 lb cat. 5 meals/day is perfect for kittens!
At the end of the day, any wet food is better than dry. Cats rely on food for moisture so do the best wet you can find. Alternatively, you could add fresh food to the kibble bowl. Low quality food, however, is low in meat based protein aka nutrition that cats need. So you need to feed more of it for it to actually be nutritious.
Not “my” cat. She was here when I bought my house- 13 years ago. She was not a kitten even then She is still quite Ferrell. Now she is slowing down, so I started feeding her 1 can of food a day, when I get home from work. No way to weigh her❗️ So I’m still trying to figure out, is this one can enough ❓❓❓

Mine are 7 months old and though guides say kittens need 400 calories a day mine always leave some food and are fed 4 times daily. I’m going to start tapering down now by 50 calories each month. KatKin the supplier I use in the U.K. sell their food portioned by calories.
Typically the average ideal weight is 4.5 kg. Please read the description of the video for easier directions on how much to feed. You have to figure this out for yourself. Every cat is different and every food is different. Please check the label of the food to figure this out.

Kittens should eat as much food as their adult projected weight. So if she should weigh 10 pounds when she's an adult, feed her as much as a 10-pound cat would eat. Check the label of the food. If you're feeding raw, 2-4% of the weight is recommended. And you're right to split that up into 5 meals/day. Around 6 months you should be able to go down to 3 meals.
Hi Jess, question, my cat looks like #5 (ideal) on the chart you showed, but he acts like he’s STARVING. He was a rescue cat, so I always thought it was because he’s not used to being fed. He sleeps by his food bowl every night on the carpet, not sure if this is an indicator? We feed him dry food in the morning then wet food for dinner, I usually give him some food at night as well along with snacks & treats throughout the day.

My cat is a classic trickle feeder. On addition I don't feed him hyper palatable food which he may want to gorge on That being said he seems to like the food I fed him well enough to maintain a healthy weight of 11-12 lbs. Therefore I prepare his food, he eats what he wants and I put the rest in the fridge until he's ready to eat again........ Currently, I'm mixing raw food from "My Pet Carnivore" and canned Nulo brand with a powdered supplement. I also give him high quality raw/whole snacks. He appears to be quite healthy and happy with this system at the moment. I'd love any input or suggestions especially regarding My Pet Carnivore. Thanks
That's great! So he is already eating a high moisture fresh food diet. I mentioned in my other comment to you, but I've only ordered from my pet carnivore once. I haven't ordered since because they don't have mice or quail. I am trying to get Jericho on a whole prey diet. But their duck, turkey, and chicken grinds look great for cats. The coarse grinds will have slightly larger pieces if you want your cat to chew some of his food. That's great for mental stimulation! Hare Today also has coarse grinds available (since you mentioned them in your other comment).
Rice? Can you explain why she eats rice? Please follow the advice in the video for how much to feed. Often, much more dry food is needed because it is very low in meat-based protein. I'd suggest learning how to read the label to understand what's actually inside. Unfortunately, dry food is also very high in carbohydrates so eating more dry food is not ideal.

Just because everyone does it, doesn't mean it's correct. 82% of people in the US feed dry food, but dry food is not ideal for cats. Please check the body condition score card to see if your cat is at the correct weight. Next, weigh your cat to note down the weight. Does your cat need to lose weight? Gain weight? Just right? Then read the label of your cat's food to see how much should be fed. Is it more or less than what you are feeding?

Make her move more. Play with her. Take her on leash walks. That what Jaxson Galaxy recommends for fat cats.

I love her channel but always leave depressed. Us regular folks just aren't really capable of doing this and the vets are usually no help at all.

Kittens should eat as much as they want when they are growing. ~1 year they are considered adult, and you can use this guide.

Hmm could be the quality of the food itself. Dry food for the most part is low-quality. I'd suggest upgrading the food and feed wet food only.

My cat is a classic trickle feeder. On addition I don't feed him hyper palatable food which he may want to gorge on
That being said he seems to like the food I fed him well enough to maintain a healthy weight of 11-12 lbs. Therefore I prepare his food, he eats what he wants and I put the rest in the fridge until he's ready to eat again........ Currently, I'm mixing raw food from "My Pet Carnivore" and canned Nulo brand with a powdered supplement. I also give him high quality raw/whole snacks. He appears to be quite healthy and happy with this system at the moment. I'd love any input or suggestions especially regarding My Pet Carnivore. Thanks
That's great! So he is already eating a high moisture fresh food diet. I mentioned in my other comment to you, but I've only ordered from my pet carnivore once. I haven't ordered since because they don't have mice or quail. I am trying to get Jericho on a whole prey diet. But their duck, turkey, and chicken grinds look great for cats. The coarse grinds will have slightly larger pieces if you want your cat to chew some of his food. That's great for mental stimulation! Hare Today also has coarse grinds available (since you mentioned them in your other comment).

Rice? Can you explain why she eats rice? Please follow the advice in the video for how much to feed. Often, much more dry food is needed because it is very low in meat-based protein. I'd suggest learning how to read the label to understand what's actually inside. Unfortunately, dry food is also very high in carbohydrates so eating more dry food is not ideal.

Just because everyone does it, doesn't mean it's correct. 82% of people in the US feed dry food, but dry food is not ideal for cats.
Please check the body condition score card to see if your cat is at the correct weight.
Next, weigh your cat to note down the weight.
Does your cat need to lose weight? Gain weight? Just right?
Then read the label of your cat's food to see how much should be fed.
Is it more or less than what you are feeding?
