The title of this episode is not "inspired by fine ancient literature"..... it's actually a reference to the James Bond movie
    "Never Say Never Again"! lol

I’m Alan Partridge is written by Steve Coogan (Alan!), Armando Iannucci (the creator of ‘Veep’ on US TV) and one of my heroes, Peter Baynham (writer on Borat and loads of tv/movies). A great team! I think the fact that you only get 50% of the jokes due to dense British references and still find Alan funny is a testament to how great he is as a character!😂😂😂

Yep. You need to watch the Craig era Bonds. More realism and stronger characterisation than the older ones, but still lots of references to the Bond universe. 1 Casino Royale, 2 Skyfall, 3 Spectre, 4 Quantum of Solace, 5 No time to die in order of excellence.

The drop dead gorgeous Barbara Bach.
The best Bond car ever, Lotus Esprit.
The introduction of the imposing, charasmatic, yet comedic villain, Jaws.

Spencer needs to check out 'You only Live Twice', (1967) which Sean Connery starred in and was shot in Tokyo, or 'The Spy Who Loved Me' (1977), which starred Roger Moore and features one of Bond's most iconic scenes, where he skied off the side of a mountain and as he's freefalling to his death his Union Jack parachute suddenly pops open (the whole cinema errupted in applause when that happend), and it has Carly Simon singing 'Nobody Does it Better', which is a classic Bond tune. As for Brosnan as Bond, Nooooooooo! He drove a BMW and wore a Seiko watch, ffs! ...Ps. I wrote this half way through your reaction and have just realised I've turned into Alan partridge. Help!

I love that Partridge manages to carry across the Atlantic, it’s such a British character with so many British references.
Also the continuity from The Day Today in the 90s right through to This Time, and the audiobooks, there can’t be many characters that have managed THAT longevity. It helped when the Gibbons’ got on board but it misses Ianucci’s touch I think.

I think Tex has a romanticized vision of the US based in the 1970s, Convoy was a hit record by C W McCall in 1976 about US truck drivers and a craze at the time for citizens band radio, a kind of primitive precursor of mobile phones. It spread over to the UK and was a big thing in the media and tv shows at the time and I think there was also a film based on the record imaginatively called Convoy.

Spencer should definitely watch all the old James Bond films from the start. If only to understand the references in Austin Powers more. And they're great films too. I'd say all of them from Dr No (1962) through to A View To A Kill (1985) are the best. My top three would be... 1 - 'From Russia With Love (1963) - a great cold war thriller with the lovely Daniela Bianchi - 2 - Goldfinger (1964) - lots of great gadgets and Oddjob - 3 - Dr No (1962) - The original with plenty of humour and Ursula Andress. I grew up watching re-runs of them as I'm not quite that old. For me the post 1985 ones are a bit of a mixed bag.

I can still get a tab in my local pub and corner shop now. That’s working class mining communities for you. You have to know the owner but towns where money is short is where community is king.

Color (yes I spelt it _that_ way) me surprised, that most people travelling on Route 66 are not Americans!
Just as most people who walk down The Mall are not Brits!

The Old Bond films were good in the context of the Cold War era - The West (UK and US vs USSR, Democracy vs Communism. These modern post-Cold War era Bond films just hit differently as they're against Global Terrorism.

Winter 2022/3 we did all the Bonds (it got tough, but we pushed through. I think Dalton and Brosnan were the worst). Then we did all the Mission Impossibles.

You guys should watch some other Steve Googan stuff. I love Paul/Pauline Calf, Saxondale (American car content), coogan's run a lesser watched series, different character in each episode, my favourite being Gareth Cheeseman :)
