      Historically it used to be played that way. There’s a film, called, I think the English game which is a story of its evolution.

    Watching that shot where clearly Mr Cholmondley-Warner had punched Grayson for his impertinence in disagreeing with him had me nearly wetting myself , perfectly played and arranged to look like it was filmed in the 1930’s… just perfect 😅

    The work involved in the sketch is amazing. Costuming, editing, all the stunts, the use of archive. And at a deeper level the "spectacle" of football in the early 90s is clearly prefigured in its 1930s precursor. Rather like Stanley Baxter it must have caused a headache to TV executives at the time over its budget but it is exquisite comedy that looks good even today.

    This always makes me laugh (just happen to be a Liverpool fan as well), lots of hidden jokes like the size of Great Britain & Ireland on the globe as well. All of the "back in time" Harry Enfield ones are funny.

    The beauty of Harry & his team was the next day at work we would end up chatting about the show and all end up laughing ourselves silly again. Have you ever checked out the Fast Show which starred Paul Whitehouse who was Harry's co-star and a brilliant sketch writer in his own right.😂

    I'm from Manchester, England. Football rivalry is rife, but so is this silliness. After all , its only a game. Most people see it that way. Good medicine , laughter. Best wishes.

    One of the funniest aspects is that the player who lights up and bends his knees is doing the classic policeman mime of the time, he then goes on to punch Finney, kisses one his teammates and then tries to take off the shorts of his opposite number. Probably didn't go down well at Scotland Yard thirty years ago!

    The dictionary was because the Arsenal player called the referee a b******* and he gets his mother on to argue the case. Calling the referee that, is a common chant from the crowds.

    I`m British and I had forgotton just how funny this was , but your reaction was priceless ( my eyes were crying) BTW my team Saints (Southampton FC ) have been beaten twice YES twice by 9 (NINE ) so for me football is`nt always so amusing .

    They got the nuances of old film coverage of such events spot on. The way in which the speed of the 1930's players moved in a faster than normal way, and Charles, 'Charley', Charles look to the camera holding his pipe in his mouth and giving a satisfactory thumbs up, as he's talking could easily have been taken from any number of old sports coverage films from the 1930's. The fact they were playing a team from the 90's was an interesting idea that showed how football has changed quite significantly over the years. The part where the entire team is chasing the ball is very reminiscent of how I remember playing the game aged about 7. Passing the ball wasn't something we even considered, back then.

The only thing your reply did was to prove your grammar is terrible as you wrote 'spelled' twice and didn't put a space before and after the hyphen, plus there should be a comma after 'around'.

    I am not a Football(soccer) fan at all( you MAY be delighted to know that I'm an American Football 🏈 fan instead, quite unusual for someone living in Northern Ireland) but I still found this comedy sketch HILARIOUS.😅😅😅😅. You MIGHT not be as delighted to know that I'm a San Francisco 49ers FANATIC.😅😅 May I suggest you look up 2 of Harry Enfield's other great comedic character creations,.
    1-"You don't want to do that/ Now I don't believe that you wanted to do that" annoying man.

    I can remember when I was a lad back in the 50’s you could shoulder barge the goalkeeper over the line if he was holding the ball. As I was very small and light it happened to me all the time!
