  • This one was really fun. I wasn't sure what to expect with the canvas and the added tooth of the canvas. All in all I really liked it. Truth be told, I feel like a little more of an artist when working on canvas :D.

    Always use proper safety precautions, and if you are not sure what those precautions might be, ask the manufacturer. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand, have good ventilation, and use a paint respirator.

    I love that he went straight to it even though he did not prep the canvas. That's the beauty of art.
    Alcohol inks are generally used on non-porous substrates like tiles, Yupo paper, the backside of certain types of photo printing paper, glass, metal, ceramics, etc...non-porous substrates.
    The inks will sink somewhat into a canvas whether it's gesso'd or not.
    Most people prep the canvas with a product you can buy at Home Depot called Kilz2 for alcohol ink painting.
    I use another gloss product which also works.
    If you want to use alcohol inks in a canvas the most important point is to blend the Kilz2 when prepping the canvas. Give the canvas a couple coats(dry between coats) and remember to blend well so the canvas does not have steaks. You will then find the inks will flow and not seep into the canvas.
    Some examples of non porous substrates for alcohol ink painting are:Yupo paper, ceramics, metal, the backside of some glossy photo printing papers, tiles,etc.

      Hi there thank you for the info !! I wanted to ask is there any other primer that can replace Kilz2 as I can't find it in my country :( ? I saw a video where an artist used gesso spray..

      @@lucamidorikawa8629 Hi Luca, I'm Mimi.
      I use "Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish" to prep my canvases for alcohol ink painting. I just love painting with the inks on a large canvas.
      I don't know a lot of people who use this (most try Kilz2), but Liquitex Gloss works great for me.
      It's a bit thick so must be diluted with water to thin it and so it's just not sitting on top of the canvas. It binds to it and becomes part of the canvas.
      I add about 1/2 cup of water in a plastic cup.
      Then I add about the same amount of the "Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish" to the water.
      Mix it very well to avoid lumps in it.
      You want it to be quite watery, thin when you pour it on your canvas.
      I take a wedge or small craft squeegy to spread it on the canvas in the beginning, but I always find myself using my bare hands to spread it evenly so there are no lines when it dries.
      Both Kilz2 and the Liquitex will leave lines if not mixed well in the cup and spread well on the canvas.
      I like using the Liquitex Gloss more than the Kilz2.
      Liquitex products are sold around the world and I hope you can find it where you live.
      You might try this technique on a practice canvas at first so you get a feel for spreading it on your canvas. Once you get the hang of it I think you'll really like using it to prep your canvases.
      Most important: mix well and spread evenly.
      I had hoped to teach a class on this technique eventually, but I became ill, had to take a break from art. I've had to have multiple surgeries. I have another major surgery coming up in 2 weeks.
      I can't wait to get the surgery over with, heal, move forward in life and with my art again.
      I hope this info helps you.
      Have a great week. Mimi

    Not sure what you chaps in the US call it lol but using tin foil makes a really interesting alternative to expensive Yupo,.Quite a lot of art/ embroidery and textiles equipment are ridiculously expensive to buy in the UK ,so invention becomes necessary if one wants to stay creative !
    The thing with using foil is that it will mould itself around canvases ( old tacky canvas pictures even will make a good base) .I just use PVA blue or a quick spray of mounting spray to adhere the foil to the background .The thing I love is by heavily applying rubbing alcohol ( again yet another not commonly thing used in this weird little island) lol the foil showing through in parts can give a really amazing ethereal quality .Thanks for sharing this with us ,Sophie x

      Yow!! Yeah just yelled in my ear man!!.....woah I have to learn not to have my headphones up too loud when watching you...ha ha ha.
      Instead of just blowing air have you ever added ink to the bowl and guided it that way? Painting ink on canvas will end up pretty dull but you can resin coat it for a fabulous shine. Composition and the overall design not too shabby Will. So nice to see you enjoying this medium but be very careful of that fumes, should probably wear a fume (not a dust mask which I see some do??) mask. Over time you can build up sensitivities and get real sick.

    • @WillBlackArt
      @WillBlackArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Neena Me sorry I hurt your ears! I've been thinking about wearing a mask, but I'm really banking on having a big wide open garage dissipate the fumes. Although I did feel like it was getting a little bit much on this piece since there was so much more alcohol evaporating. I'm working up to resin I really want to try it! For some reason it feels like that's the next fronteir

    Just a few budget suggestions here: I haunt thrift stores for ugly painted canvas pieces. Now you have a prep ready canvas to start with. Then do YOUR stuff as usual. The cost is great cause the uglier the painting is, the less expensive it will be. Especially good if you are going to do a large piece. Love this site - lots of talent out there. Oh...btw, has anyone tried adding gold flakes sprinkled over the piece once you are done. Gives your work a little elegance.

      Let me act as Will's helper here, because he seems to be occupied too much to reply to the same question again and again. Somewhere down there he answered: "I didn't do anything to the canvas. This is just one of the pre-gessoed canvases".
      I could have foretold (from experience) that the inks would seep into the canvas and look dull in result, but I think, Will's demo has some value nonetheless, because it shows what happens if you do not prepare your canvas with Gesso, a thick layer of paint or some other stuff, first. So, thumbs up for Will!

I have ranger inks and did try a quick something but hadn’t found it worked, but maybe I didn’t use enough blending solution.

    Interesting.... I wonder if another coat of gesso before using the al inks would help eliminate the inks sinking into the grain of the canvas. My fav was the green & hot pink & magenta & purple. It was sooo happy & bright & I loved it. So disappointed that you blew that all away... especially after it got muddied with gray.

    I first used alcohol inks on a canvas because I couldn't find Yupo paper at the Michaels I went to! That air gun is really useful. I wonder if it can be used to move acrylic and watercolor paints around too?

    What did you pour onto the canvas first? Is the canvas just normal or a specific one for alcohol ink? Thank you

    • @WillBlackArt
      @WillBlackArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was isopropyl alcohol I poured on before the pigment. I also use a spray bottle to add the alcohol, but this time poured. I like this better than prediluting my inks. I think it turns out better. There is noting special about the canvas. Just make sure that your canvas is pre-gesso'd or you put some on yourself.

    • @NikkiHodgesArt
      @NikkiHodgesArt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much. 😀 just getting into this medium. Love watching you work. Odd question have you ever tried using tattoo ink? A lot of the alcohol inks are expensive in U.K just a thought

    • @WillBlackArt
      @WillBlackArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No but that might be the coolest idea ever! I know India inks and tattoo inks can be similar. You can do full tattoos with India ink. When I tried India inks it didn't work but it did make some pretty interesting designs. So if you are Intrepid and would like to pave your own way and start another type of Art I'd say do whatever the heck you want! 🤘🤘🤘

    • @WillBlackArt
      @WillBlackArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry it's been a minute for me to get back to you. I hope it's not too late. I'll call inks and acrylic inks move completely different acrylic eggs are water-based and water doesn't evaporate as fast as alcohol. So the end up looking completely different when they are dried. Not better or worse just completely different. with alcohol inks I never use water only alcohol. The higher percent of isopropyl alcohol you use the more the colors will move and the faster it will evaporate

    I think you may need to bow your head to the rules of water colors. In watercolors there is no white, the white is the paper showing through. This makes watercolor the most difficult medium to use and control. My #1 rule is a mistake is never a mistake. #2 rule is work from lightest color to the darkest. I see you want to use these colors as "accidental art" So you must master the art of laying down color and bow to what is produced in the accident.

    • @WillBlackArt
      @WillBlackArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว
