Back to Basics - Alcohol Ink on Canvas

    I cover more than alcohol ink on this site. Take a peek! Let me know what you think!
    A very quick video to demonstrate to you and to me the use of AI on canvas. I used a Michaels preprep'd canvas for this demo. The AI flowed very nicely over the gesso canvas. This was my first experiment with a stretched canvas, and I really enjoyed it. Of course flowers are a great subject for an experiment - but later I will do one that will be more of a landscape. Stay tuned!

    I appreciate this so much, the fact that you are ACTUALLY using a canvas and not doing a transfer is what made me +1. The artwork is absolutely beautiful. I subscribed.

    Great job. What did you use to finished/seal it? It is said that alcohol ink can lose its colour (I believe because of the low boiling point of 78°C and volatility). Some persons use a layer of resin to cover it after it dries.

    • @221b-Maker-Street
      @221b-Maker-Street ปีที่แล้ว

      Alcohol inks are generally not lightfast because they're dye-based not pigment-based - I don't think the boiling point has anything to do with it!
      UV sealers, resins, and varnishes could help prolong the colour life of your ink for very brief temporary outdoor situations - such as wearing jewellery outdoors, but any piece of artwork in direct sunlight for more than a couple of weeks will degrade noticeably, and quickly I'm afraid. For that reason alone, you have to be very careful about selling alcohol artwork, if you don't want disgruntled customers on your hands.

    Beautiful 😍 Hi. I just wondering. How can we know the canvas already pre-coated with gesso? Thankyou 😁

    • @gerrymorgan626
      @gerrymorgan626 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      N Asya the canvases I buy at Michaels are labeled. On the label you will see a reference about preprimed with gesso. It’s usually in very tiny print. If I purchase canvases from other vendors, I look for the words preprimed with gesso. If that isn’t indicated, I don’t buy them.

      Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. To answer your question, in this case, I have not sealed this painting with anything. It has been hanging in a gallery for two months without any signs of fading. Which surprises me because the reds will fade the quickest. Let me know if there is anything you would like me to demonstrate or if you have any more questions.

      diane rix
      Good evening, Diane! Thank you for watching and your question. The canvas was purchased from Michaels. It was presealed with gesso so there was no bleed. The inks moved beautifully across the canvas like it was on smooth tile. I was very pleased with how it came out. This was my first attempt using the canvas. I am so glad that I bought the gesso’d one - truly by accident!

    • @gerrymorgan626
      @gerrymorgan626 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for your subscribing and your kind comment. The canned air was just a generic house brand (Staples Office Supply) of a computer keyboard duster. I don’t know where you live, because in some areas of the USA the sale of it is controlled because the propellent in the can is sniffed by some folks to get a high. You may need to ask for it. I think you can purchase it at most office supply stores. It shouldn’t be to difficult to find. Hope this helps.

      Good afternoon! Thank yo for watching the video! This canvas was an experiment. I bought this small canvas from Michaels. It was pre coated with gesso before purchase, therefore, I did nothing to it but apply the inks and alcohol. Hope this helps. Is there anything else you would like to see me do? I have been debating with my self about a subject to pursue without success. Christmas prep for the fairs have me pre occupied at the moment!

    Seeing as how this is mostly "alcohol" what is the 'indoor' factor as far as odors or flammibility ????

    • @gerrymorgan826
      @gerrymorgan826  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good afternoon, Walter! Thank you for your question, and it is a good one. When ever I am doing anything with the inks and the alcohols, I try to make sure I have very good ventilation. Just blowing the inks isn't quite so bad, but when you start using the alcohol in a mist or a spray, it can get quite "Intoxicating". If you are having any issues with the use of alcohol, or any sensitivity to it, pregnant, or other organ issues, I would avoid using it. Or just use in outside on the patio for short periods. I have a window fan that draws fresh air into the room and vents the alcohol out. If I am teaching a class, I bring it with me to ensure there is adequate ventilation. If the room does not provide ventilation or at least a window, I don't teach in it. Protect yourself. I know there are some artist that like to set their work on fire. I do not see a need for choosing this, but if you want to experiment, that is totally up to you. I don't smoke, but if I did, I would not smoke around these chemicals. You need to respect the chemistry at all times and protect yourself. Just about every chemical used in the arts has some issue with safety. Educate yourself.
      Happy Halloween!

      Gesso is what the canvas id prepared with before purchase. You can also add another coat of gesso to the canvas if you want to ensure a good surface. I have only used gesso to prime with. It comes in black as well as the common white. Hope this helps.

      Good morning! Thank you for watching and your comment. The spray is just a can of canned air used to clean computer key boards. Bought it at Staples, mud local office supply store. I am sure you can get if for Walmart, Costco and other big box stores. But, I don’t know where you are located, so if those stores are not available, I think I would try to find it on Amazon. Good luck 👍🏼. Let me know if you would like any other information.
