You got to realize how historic this was. This was the first concert of a US Band in the USSR and it was during the end of its very existence. The USSR was formally ended in December of 91 but it began with the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. The fact this concert was allowed to even take place signaled to the world that the USSR was dead.
They say the helicopters were the "sooth" the crowd, but actually they were using the downdraft to get fresh air down into the crowd. The back of the crowd was over a mile from the stage. At 18 I wanted to be there... at 56 all I can think is... how far away are the bathrooms?
If there were bathrooms, & that’s an ‘if’, I wouldn’t imagine they were in the most hospitable shape dealing with a crowd this size- I seriously doubt they had anyone in charge of making dure they were functioning correctly etc… 😷
I reckon it would've been a case of eat the bare minimum, to try and keep your bowels as empty as possible, and drink just enough to keep hydrated. The combination of body odour, perspiration and urine would have been quite pungent. 🤢 🙃🐨🇦🇺
This was the Monsters Of Rock concert. AC/DC was here, too. You should see Pantera's Domination from this concert as well. What you're witnessing is freedom. After they ran out of their small number of tickets, it became free. You just had to show up. What no one expected was the entire country showing up- The helicopter was there to keep people cool, since the body heat was so immense.
I wanted to be there so badly that I spent a small fortune back then to team up with a bunch of people to umm...hack the shit out of this broadcast and spread it to as many humans as possible. It is like the end of a war-the Cold War. Exactly the crowd you would expect to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first entry of American Rockers into the USSR for a free concert no less. It was on a military base, and absolutely insane. I’ve watched this video more times than I can count. It never gets old. 1991 was an epic time to be alive. 🤟🏼

@xplay I'm not surprised . I came to comment that there seems to be zero health & safety procedures in place at this gig so finding out that people died at it would have been inevitable given the conditions the crowd were left in. I doubt there was access to drinking water, I shudder to think of the state the portaloos must've been in, if they even had any that is.. Then there would've been an intense crush to get out of the venue after the gig- that could've been whrn people were killed... The bsnd sounded great. But then again a Metallica always do

You would think this was the biggest concert attendance ever with 1.6 million , but apparently in 1994 Rod Stewart played to 3.4 million in Rio on the Cococabana Beach .
The thing with Rio though is that were a lot of people there literally for the beach. It's hard to estimate how many were actually there for the concert. The general idea is 2.5 - 3 million.
I don't comment much, but your videos have helped me through countless long tear filled and sleepless nights. And I'm grateful. Thank you for all that you do 😊❤😅

I love your sentiment about seeing the flags from all over the world. Seeing all of the camaraderie and knowing the sociopolitical backdrop of that place at that time is kinda mind blowing. This concert was one of the last death rattles of the USSR. The Berlin Wall had fallen, the iron curtain was parting and the Cold War was all but over. This show was the West winning the most crucial part of the Cold War, the war of culture. Nukes and Capitalism didn’t topple the USSR, art did. If you take away people’s ability to freely express and experience art, they will yearn for that freedom more than food and water. If the USSR had allowed its citizens to freely be themselves without fear of imprisonment or worse, then the Cold War would have ended VERY differently. Instead, what we see is millions of people finally getting an emotional outlet they haven’t had in most of their lifetimes. That experience for a lot of them had to be nothing short of transcendent and that makes me so fucking happy to think about. Art is cool. Also, I’d love to see you peep some Silent Planet! It was impossible to say how many actually witnessed the show because there were many people that were watching from hotel rooms that lined the beach as well as hundreds of boats and ships that were close enough to catch a view of the show. ACDC performed at this show also. It was the Monsters of Rock tour, and included Pantera, The Black Crows, Metallica, and AC⚡DC along with a Russian band.
That was beautiful! Like Opera nerd said during her analysis, the ground must be shaking under them.
Nice to see this reaction here 😊
2:30 am , that's dedication. Thanks for doing what you do.
People talk about how much it energizes you to play in front of a live crowd. Imagine what it would be like when you look out and the crowd is like the ocean, no end in sight....
This is what I'm talking about. Diving into classic rock.
This was monsters of rock concert and AC/DC headlined and featured Metallica, Pantera, the Black Crows and E.S.T with 1.6 to 2 million people attended and this concert was free......it was held at an airport.
Thanks for the reaction!
Enter Sandman is one of those songs that I hear it and it automatically gets my energy going! Loved this song since it came out. \m/ Love 'Tallica!
For quite a while, the bar that I used to go to when I was 19+ would play this at 11pm every Friday & Saturday to get the crowd going!
Fire reaction man 🔥
Omg thank you for the education! I love Metallica and this is my fav but 1.6 MILLION people 😮!!!!!! Wow !!
A truly insane concert!
Thank you bro for saying that sometimes all you need is to have some one listening to you i have been in therapy for 20 years for pstd for getting robbed at gunpoint and till this day still can’t get over it
AC/DC was the headliner and people forget other than pantera, the black crowes were also their, the concert was in September just a few months before the fall of official fall of USSR in December '91
It wasn't a stadium, it was an open field, after the end of USSR and opening of Russia. This Monsters of Rock was insane. I saw it on MTV by that time. They had Metallica, AC/DC, Pantera. Its was the first real concert in Moscow after the Cold War.
It was about 1 million people there the biggest concert ever made. They not even know how to behave (the army securities). There was many "police Violence" because they didn't know what a Heavy Metal concert was supposed to be.
There is a "documentary" that you can find in youtube about this festival
My Uncle worked for GM n they opened a dealership n Moscow n he went to oversee building n running of it, he was scared to death to go as a NOLA boy, but went n loved the ppl, he was there for 10yrs from 90-2000 n he went to this concert n said it was amazing, cuz the culture LOVED everything American 😉💞
I’ve seen Metallica live in the 80s and let me tell you you have not seen a crowd it’s insane! I was front row right up against the stage. I thought I was gonna pass out. There was so many people it was so hot and I couldn’t move at all. It was a crazy night. I couldn’t hear for like a week after the concert.
We just got home from their concert, it was great!
Imagine the terror for the band knowing you have to eventually end the show and get out of there!
Don't worry bro, we love you, and your reactions bro
It's 1.6 million ppl. This followed the Mosco Peace Music Festival 89 THIs opened the door to North American Bands ,,
Same concert their song Creeping Death. 1.6 million Russians screaming out, Die Die Die!! Worth a watch
I love how James casually walks out, looks at the crowd and says today, we are Gods!!
Exactly, another Cliff
New Sub
The start of the concert at sun set and the choice of the opening song is perfect also lol.
A lot of people don't realize, that AC/DC was the headliner of this show. That is AC/DCs stage from the Razors Edge tour. Same year as the live at Donington video.
I have always loved this video. The energy is crazy. This was the Monsters of Rock and AC/DC, Pantera & The Black Crowes were there also.
it was 1.6 million !!! people attending. That will never be topped
