    I’m Not trans; but the line “for the sake of your future self” made me cry.
    I’m glad that you have a character that feels like a genuine representation of your experience.

    Absolutely adore someone is talking about Bridget so in-depth from a trans experience. I'm trans MtF myself and only just got into guilty gear because of Bridget, but hearing her words, seeing her story is really kinda feels like its broke this, wall of fear and doubt inside me about my own trans experience, the fear of starting HrT, the fear of changing, so many things i was stuck on that she has, just done so much for me already. overtime I hear her arcade dialog it just makes me tear up and cry because all her words are what I've been thinking but not letting myself say, she means so so much to me. Her words I just want to say back to her if I could
    I want to live as my true self, and I cant let my fears and doubts get in the way of that.

    Fun fact: In Japanese there are many different types of pronouns a person can use. Such as Watashi and Boku. Both of which can be used by both men and women.
    Bridget however uses -Uchi in Japanese which is an EXPRESSLY female pronoun. You literally cannot get any more obvious than that lol

      Two words, otokonoko culture.

    • @AngelTail
      @AngelTail 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@Faust1sm I understand that you'd like to express the idea that since Bridget came from that otokonoko 男の娘 trope in the early games, it means that she'll always be otokonoko, but does that mean that it's the only truth to Bridget and her story?
      It's true that Bridget was 男の娘, but in the new game, isn't it clear in the dialogues and in her new theme song "The Town Inside Me" that she does want a change? That it doesn't take away, it doesn't misrepresent, it doesn't demean and disrespect gender-nonconforming men, women, and folks, whether they be 男の娘, femboy, bakla or any other gender-nonconforming identity? That actually it's inspiring to see how Bridget's stopping to lie to herself , "move on by (her) own will", and "No matter what changes, will no longer change her"?
      In one word, freedom!
      The road to understanding transgender/nonbinary/gender-nonconforming characters is not to compete in oppression olympics; it's more empathetic to listen to each and hear each other's struggles. Bridget's been an inspiration to gender-nonconforming and trans folks worldwide... why not celebrate this new chapter with her then instead of getting bogged into what's canon and what's not?
      'inviting ya to freedom and growth then yas! Sorry for the loooong post!

      @Faust1sm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AngelTail Now I don't want to come off as some bigot or anything, but if you actually read the official post about Bridget on the JP website, they're referred to by both male and female pronouns in the same paragraph. This, in a sense would be more targeted toward androgyny but I might be wrong. I might also be wrong when I say that the EN localization focuses too much on one half of the narrative, because if you take it in as a whole Bridget would be genderfluid? I think that's the term used in the west, even in the arcade mode depending on the ending you get, the pronouns Bridget uses change which would further support the genderfluid change would it not? I'm not trying to invalidate anyone's opinions or beliefs, just making a somewhat educated assumption which might be seen as wrong by others.

    • @AngelTail
      @AngelTail 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Faust1sm oh thanks for sharing what you've found out, Torogao-sensei! I actually asked another person who's made several videos on Bridget coming out as trans to comment on that post made on the JP website. She's Andrea Ritsu-sensei, and she has made a video titled "Let's talk about Bridget's gender in GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE-". She's fluent in Nihongo, so she might be able to give more insight into this. I hope she has time and energy to respond!
      What I feel is this... it is perfectly OK to have different views on Bridget's gender... her being genderfluid can be quite possible, based on the dialogue in the game! And being trans: that's also quite possible, too, moi feels, since transgender's an umbrella term that include people whose assigned gender at birth is different from what they identify as now. Being nonbinary, genderfluid, bigender, agender -- there are so many ways of trans-ness!
      The problem that arises, moi thinks, are bad-faith arguments that invalidate how different folks on the LGBT spectrum feel about Bridget.
      On the pronoun change depending on the arcade modee, I'm not sure about that? Let me refer to this video that dissects Bridget's use of Nihongo pronouns:
      "Bridget Was Always Trans"
      by Localization Addict
      It's actually great that Bridget has undertaken a journey in gender in Strive, isn't it? No matter what arguments we present, what remains perhaps that everyone could agree with is this: gender is a journey, even in games! Change does happen, and the characters in Strive do strive towards change for the better!
      Thanks for sharing your views,Torogao-sensei! I hope that you were also able to understand Alice Luna-sensei relating to Bridget's journey, too, and how Alice-sensei found CONNECTION in her struggles!
      14:35 "Don't be afraid with experimenting!" Thanks, Alice-sensei, for encouraging peeps to join Bridget-sensei, you, and so many of us exploring gender!

    So another fantastic interpretation for her words, "I hate the Alarm Clock I chose" and my personal favorite interpretation is this:
    Bridget managed to free herself from her village's superstition. She was in essence "awake." However, her choice in living as a male did not make her happy. So in essence, she "hates" the "alarm clock" she "chose."

    Some people are acting like Guilty Gear just now turned woke but Guilty Gear has always been progressive. For example Ky and Dizzy's entire relationship is an analog for an interracial relationship. Ky's theme is about how he use to see all Gears as monsters but his perspective changed after meeting Dizzy. Ky expresses that he can't go back on his previous actions so all he can do his follow his path to be the best version of himself in the present.

    An argument I've seen sometimes is how what you covered is, as they put it, the "bad ending," and that if you do it perfect (I'm not clear on what exactly you have to do, but it involves doing better in some capacity), then she never has the "I am a girl" line. I read from someone who's played more of the game though, that all the endings are more made to sort of complement the character and come together in a whole, rather than any of them being more or less accurate than the others, so it's more accurate to call what you showed the "normal" ending. Furthermore, the "perfect" ending itself, I've watched it, and after thinking on it and reading what some other people have to say on it, I'm pretty sure it's there to hammer home the point that Bridget's gender is entirely Bridget's choice--separate from how she was raised, how people view her, what societal pressures she felt the need to fight, it's something only she can decide based on her own, internal feelings, and it's not really anyone else's business, so that's why it ends with her feeling confident, that no one's going to change her again, as she walks off-screen without ever even mentioning what gender she chooses.
    Isolated, you could say that ending means she's more gender fluid or that we don't know her gender, but I feel like that just ignores, well, basically everything you talked about in this video, which I feel is equally important.

    • @dyrr836
      @dyrr836 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even if someone wanted to make that argument (which is BS because "bad endings" don't exist in Strive) the in game character glossary still refers to her with female pronouns. This was not the case prior to her release as a DLC character, and subsequent coming out as trans. At the end of the day, it can't really be denied that the developers clearly wrote her as a trans woman, no matter what some bad faith trolls may wish to believe. I wish more of the fandom respected that but I guess gamers gonna be gamers.

    • @katiewyatt4399
      @katiewyatt4399 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Also, the perfect ending doesn't make sense without the context of the other endings before it.
      Her asking Ky about when he publicly came out as a gear makes no sense without Bridget's conflict.
      Transphobes are literally willing to throw away the entire story in order to keep Bridget from being trans.

  • @Mightfox

    Thanks for sharing this. Even though i'm a femboy(genderfluid, but usually femboy) I appreciated your video with all your honest emotions.
    And I really related to the parts about notions like "You should find out whats wrong, and just act on it". This last week I went through a bit of a shock that made me realize I was really neglecting my gender expression and it was hurting me and making me vulnerable to things that shouldn't be bother me so much. I had put off doing a lot of gender expression things for like 8 years because of stuff like "What if I hurt my chances of getting/keeping a job? I'll wait until after this job."
    And I realized I felt like I couldnt even believe in my own gender identity, which causes a vicious cycle. Even though I would believe other peoples' various identities immediately, I realized that for myself I had this disgusting, cruel feeling in me that would barb me and tell my identity wasn't even a legitimate identity and that I was silly for caring. It made me easy to wound. I'm now taking steps so that this doesnt fester anymore.
    I'm sorry if that makes it too much about me, but I just wanted to emphasize that its so important to just act on things, and to carefully examine your emotions because you can find things that you didnt realize were there, often conflated into other feelings.

    Two things I noticed about this song are that right before she's about to confront her issue, she cuts off her sentence. On the surface that looks like deflection but she then goes on to describe her dysphoria. And that description is very telling about her other main character, her propensity to run away and put up with the feeling. "It tastes like vegetables I don't like" means "but I have to eat them anyway, I was told to finish my plate, it's what's expected of me." She avoids the why entirely. Same as when she mentions "I hate the alarm clock I chose". She's being complacent because it's what she's used to. She's *sick* of it but changing it seems so hard because she has to admit there's a problem.
    Every bit of her song is trans in multiple layers.

    That part about Bridget being unhappy when correcting others to say she's a boy hits way too close to home. Even now that I'm out to close family and friends, I still have to tell people at school and in public that I'm a boy. I present so feminine, and I love when people address me as a girl, but as soon as somebody asks me directly what my gender is, I have to lie. And it hurts much to tell that lie. I know exactly who I am, and who everyone should know me as, but they can't know. If my school were to find out I'm trans, I'd never be able to get the required PE credit that I need to graduate. If any one person in that locker room knows who I am, I will be bullied and belittled, and being sent to the right locker room isn't any better. Nobody in there would trust me, nobody would care if something happened to me, because "I'm really in there just to get off to half naked girls". No one can know.

    Look I just got into guilty gear and I don’t really care about this shit other than the fact it’s controversial at all is a very bad look on the topic.
    Someone legit started using the whole lore dump on Bridgette being groomed and abused into something their not supposed to be (all while still using the term he and him mind you) to debunk the fact that she’s having thoughts about her own identity.
    The fact this is an issue is pathetic. This character has been a trap from as far as I can remember if they want to finally go the route of making her trans fair dues at least it’s done with respect.
    Also this whole child grooming shit. I don’t know the ins and the outs but what I do know is that not all gender dysmorphia is specifically a bunch of people bullying a little boy into becoming a girl. Like most life it’s much more complex than that and to say it isn’t is ignorant and shame on you for thinking like that.
    What’s more this is a goddamn video game character. If the devs want to develop her story by having her transition then that’s their choice and it’s yours to not buy the game and fuck off back to Synthetic man.
    Christ next these people will be saying that Bedman is sexist or something because it isn’t Romeo strapped to a bed anymore.

    I'll try to explain how i feel about the situation, with the following example:
    Imagine we'll get a new installment, and the devs come up with a new story. And they say, that Strive's Bridget, was actually a different cis girl, that was disguised as Bridget. The reason was that she was protecting her friend, and that's what her song implies with the lyrics "me without me". Pretty bullshit right?
    The point is, it's terrible to deprive groups of representation. That's what happened in Strive, and that's why i'm sad about it.
    story time:
    while swapping a character as i described above may sound far fetched, in the classic game Mortal Kombat 2, people who get to play their MK1 favorite character Sub-Zero, are actually playing a different one without even knowing!
    His name is Kuai Liang, and he pretends to be the original Sub Zero (that's why he uses the same name and appearance). The actual character though (Bi Han) got killed in the first game (no, they don't know that either, at least until they komplete the arcade mode).
    What i am saying is, though unlikely, everything is possible. And while in MK's case was a welcomed change, in Strive's case, taking away Bridget from one minority to represent another, is just plain hurtful. I'd rly like them to find a way to make up for this.
    (nonetheless i admit i liked the video bcs of your t shirt :v )

    it's so inspiring, silly video game character helped me so much
    I bought GGST and just her to main here and be very good
    I told my friends and mom about my feelings and they are very okay with that, my dad and brother would hate me
    uhh, my journey just began, i love Bridges's theme and i have to be brave
    Also, Ky and Goldlewis say "trans rights", so based, i love them too
