Since so much people asked : the show is infinity train and you can go watch it on HBO max right here : www.hbomax.com/series/urn:hbo:series:GXkNXsArG_o7CZgEAABfH
Owen Dennis (the creator of the show) and his crew really need help so go watch the series !
Thanks for all the views and the comments, I'm glad you're enjoying the video !
Don't forget to read the description, there's more informations about Lake and the theories around her.
Also, don't forget it's all just theories and personnal interpretations, it's not cannon, so keep your transphobic opinions to yourself, thanks.

I know this is a little offbeat from everything else here, but this just feels like you had another Pixar film, wear something that technically isn't sentient to suddenly sentient now, but this time it's your reflection. Now there's apparently a whole like life force behind it, so now you have to feel bad every time you accidentally see your reflection butt naked in the mirror

And One-One's dialogue in the next scene is so good. He's a representation of a system that isn't intentionally malicious but can't accept the possibility of someone wanting anything outside of or beyond the normative expectations of the people in it, resulting in harm upon those that fall outside of it. The logical limitations of the train do not account for the existence of a denizen who doesn't want to remain a denizen because that's just how things are supposed to work. It's only when Lake exploits a loophole in the system that allows for a recognition of their personhood, brought on by a logical contradiction due to unforseen circumstances, are they then granted an exit.
Also, I find it poetic that Lake's main friend/love interest on their journey is Navajo, so the subtext of Jesse going back to assist his trans-coded friend/love interest confront a system not built to accept the humanity of particular individuals is especially compelling, considering the marginalized circumstances of both groups.

      Similar parallel:
Ashley Johnson, who voices Tulip and Mirror Tulip, is part of a D&D show called “Critical Role”. In Critical Role’s second campaign, there’s a character named Mollymauk Tealeaf (not played by Ashley Johnson, but her friend and co-star Taliesin Jaffe).
Part of Mollymauk’s story is that he woke up one day with no memory of who he was. Everything inside him was “empty”. And that’s the only word he was able to say for a while. Until he met people who misinterpreted it for “MT”, as his initials. Then he gave himself the name Mollymauk Tealeaf.
Anyway, I’m a big Critical Role fan and I caught that reference, or parallel, when I watched it.

I can touch on the topic by offering you some of my perspective:
In a world with new tech and old biology, we weren't designed to communicate through text. People are able to say just about whatever they want without consequence, as opposed to in-person, where you to have to look people in the eye to communicate with them.
There's many things to take from that... Young people deserve to know just how harsh, careless, and willfully ignorant people can be, in-person or on the monitor. Regardless, we should also recognize the difference. Not to say you're clueless to that fact. (We should study this stuff in middle school psychology or something, anyway.)
Regardless of whether someone associates your trans perspective with illness, associates it with challenges, or associates in with diversity of opportunity, anyone with any principals can see that whatever it is you're dealing with is not easy, and criticism, generally speaking, ought to be handled with a certain amount of care, if it's worth anything. (I'm sure you're irritated when it isn't.)
Obviously since what you deal with is very rare, (though decreasingly so, I hear,) you could use a hand, and that's the general thing I recommend: Do the best you can with what you have, and ask fo help when you need it. As well, continue to push head-on into different perspectives about trans issues, because no one of us, individuals or groups, has all the answers.

Even when you cry and say over and over you are a person, that you just want to be yourself, and all they do is blame you for not being the character they made up to replace you. They ignore and cherry-pick your personality to fit into a reflection and then get so mad when you break it. The only crime I committed was being myself and I’m reminded daily of it. Thank goodness for the people who live unapologetically, they give me hope. Someday I will be a person I can live with, and those people who would say otherwise will be far behind.

Lake is such a great example of writing a trans coded character without making it explicit that they're trans. Their whole struggles with either forcing themself to live their life as someone they aren't, or risk getting hurt is a very real challenge that so many trans people face- as well as them constantly being told that they aren't really a person (akin to misgendering) by those around them.

    • @ratspew932

I think saying she’s transcoded is kinda far fetched (unless it was confirmed or smth). For example, I have abusive parents and I can relate to those things, like being forced to live a life they want being at risk being told nothing I want is real etc. It’s not about me, I’m sure a lot of other people have the same struggles, not only trans. Idk how to phrase it but I’m not here to start a fight, I just can’t understand what specifically indicates that creators hid a message about trans people.

I like that they choose Lake as their name because it fits as a nonbinary name, but also that's the first time they were able to look at their reflection on a reflective surface without being attacked. Everytime they look in a mirror, water, or a shiny surface the flex come to attack them. The only way they were able to see themselves was by looking at their hand which is where their number is supposed to be. They no longer have to look at the constant reminder that they are stuck, and they don't need to worry about being attacked. They can now look at themselves as who they are. Lake.

Considering it might have been motivation for people watching it to come out as trans/nb after seeing Lake push through it, Id say we need a few dozen more shows like this asap 😭❤️ sorry for the rant, I’m just really happy seeing so many people in the comments get so much out of this show, it’s really beautiful

It hurts even more if it’s my own friends, when we’ve gone over this with them at least twice, one lasting an hour and they still haven’t digested it. They’re genuinely good people, I will say, but it just seems they’ve just forgotten and I just don’t want to say anything because I don’t want to get one of my friends in trouble again.

That's what I like about lake so much.
She shows what many people have in common and how tribalism, seperation or being unwilling to learn from eachothers can make you blind and not see that someone right in front of you is going though something you can actually understand and isn't so different than you make them out to be.

Being trapped as the reflection of the world around you and its rules... that’s the most accurate metaphor about being trans I’ve ever heard. And constantly having to convince those around you that you’re real, that you’re a person... it’s everything.

    • @Brandon-1996
      @Brandon-1996 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

If rules aren't allowed to flex and adapt to changes in the environment, they become oppressive. If they're too open to change, rules proven reliable through time can be destroyed, and may have to be rebuilt from scratch.
We are a part of the world around us, but within its rules we are offered quite a bit of freedom. The metaphorical doors of choice aren't actually open to us if we don't know they're there, so knowledge can be a limitation of freedom.
That's what comes to my mind from the first thing you said. I don't understand what you mean by, "constantly trying to convince those around you that you're real, that you're a person."

One of the most significant parts imo about Lake's story being a trans allegory is that their journey didn't end in them leaving the train because the system allowed denizens to get numbers, they ended up leaving the train solely because of a loophole on an individual level that gave them that exit. It parallels with the real world experiences of many trans people: not that they're able to transition because the societal systems in place accept that, but because they're fortunate enough to experience that while many others like them are left without that lucky chance.

As a cis person, I didn't get the coding the first time. Nevertheless, the guy from the flex police who safeguards his existence by serving the system but insists it's not about protecting his authority but maintaining the proper order... that hit hard, and now with this extra context, damn.

Same I'm as dull as a brick when it comes to these things. Didn't even fully realize my own brother was trans until he straight up told me. He even cut his hair short a bit before that, then again he watched this with me and didn't realize he was trans at the time either so....

Owen: "I made an openly Nonbinary character!"
CN: "You can't do that, we will cancel you!"
Owen: "Okay, rude but whatever. I'll comply for the sake of the show."
    CN: (still cancels the show.)
