Glad to have got this out at last. I did what I could to follow what happens in the VN, but added what happened in the anime where it could fit. For instance, most of Abe's naval engagement was taken from the dialogue in the VN...in the anime they didn't have the time to fully depict his specific maneuvers. Anyway, enjoy! They were all heroes. Muv Luv always depicts how these soldiers are from different countries with different beliefs, even among their countrymen, but on the battlefield they do their best to work together and push humanity ever so slightly more in the direction of survival
While There can be no victory without sacrifice but this victory is both costly and bittersweet.
It's true. Isumi was doing everything she could in that situation to NOT sacrifice herself and throw her life away, but I think she knew the moment she stepped into the Susanoo that there was probably a 99% chance she would have to. So she sent Kashiwagi away to begin with, only for her to come back....and they almost made it out of there alive too.

Great job on the video! Although not a pyrrhic victory but a costly one to say the least. Whole unit destroyed, just devastating hit to the military. I can definitely see civilians desiring not to put soldiers in harms way but seek a more indirect method of fighting the BETA. Maybe something to the effect of Nixon air campaigns at the closing of the Vietnam war but n this world, G-bombs and Alt-V.
Thanks man! Good point with the civilian and politicians. They'll naturally want to keep everyone safe, so if someone comes up with Alt V and says it'll accomplish that, it'll make sense to them. In their eyes, Alt IV-supporting policies/operations might be making life overall harder for everyone. Without hindsight, they'd all be justified to take the risk-averse path and anyone who doesn't could be considered crazy. But...The Day After is our hindsight lol

Although I haven't watched Muv-luv (just watched battle clips at youtube). Its very cool that there was this kind of planning which is really impressive.
It's insanely thorough, that's its big appeal to me. Not a lot of media these days truly understands how to write and depict massive military operations like this -- the planning, execution, emphasis on logistics, plans not surviving contact, troops on the front having to re-adjust, as well as different units needing to accomplish an objective so another unit can accomplish theirs...it creates a pretty intense back and forth which the main cast doesn't overshadow, but rather has to play a part in.
Fwiw, iirc the first wave of Heavy Laser irradiation hit the Susanoo directly, but it had some pretty heavy-duty anti-laser materials/coating, much like the fleets' battleships.
I can't recall if the VN had it hit the Rutherford field directly, which would've been on at the time. But yeah the animation for the scene has only the second volley getting redirected, while the first gets absorbed and then dissipates
Unfortunately Operation 21st was a turning point in the war against the BETA, one that would lead to a ripple effect that would weaken the IJM as well as UN forces in Japan, including Yokohama Base the primary lead of Alternative IV. If it wasn't for further sacrifices made by the A-01, as well as all those involved in the fierce fighting of Yokohama, the defense of the Pacific theatre would have completely collapsed.
Whole in all, I'd argue that Operation 21st was a complete failure in regards to the chain of events it caused, only leading to success due to the victory in Operation Cherry Blossom. It's sad to think of it that way when you think of all the lives lost in Operation 21st, and I mean no disrespect to all the soldiers that died in the operation, however fictional it maybe.
I was impressed how both Alt 4 and 5 proponents managed to spin the outcome in favor of their own perspective. I'd say it was a near total-defeat scenario that was only mitigated with a costly hail-mary. Without Yuuko and Isumi, that last Corps sized herd would be stomping over Japan all throughout the New Year. In the most pragmatic sense...they scraped by with just enough resources to barely break even by the time of Cherry Blossom. That's not what you want in war at all lol, but they were in a do or die scenario due to the 21st hive growing, attack on Yokohama, and Babylon being readied.
Disagree, it seems bad from our point of view because we are told the world has suffered heavy attrition from decades past but they also represent a fully militarized population. Incompetence and beta surprises mean that the operation was far more costly than it needed to be but the risks were made clear in the first video and therefore the destruction of the hive was still of paramount importance meaning this was a strategic victory.
It’s an existential threat and in that view perhaps the use of strategic weapons should have been the go to as being alive is generally a more important than having a rock stripped bare of all life. I suppose you could say they wanted the reactor intact but if that’s true they should have put more into the effort, fire support was anemic due to the navy being under-supplied, there was only really one wave at each beach when the entire Japanese military should have been queuing up to land and their orbital strike seems to have gone in far too early and had been proven in the past to not really be that effective of a doctrine.

Just found your channel, and have been binging you videos. Excellent work over all, and keep it up! I actually stumbled into this universe by watch the Schwarzes Marken series several years back. Now I want to rewatch it and the other series, as well.
Yeah Muv-Luv was always a story I occasionally stumbled on and kept saying, "I've heard of this one before" but never truly knew what it was. Total Eclipse was the one that got me into it. Schwarzesmarken was a very good one too, and it had an ending...which a lot of anime don't get lol

Yeah that one is a meatgrinder. It'll be pretty brutal to cover. Wish the anime had gotten there so I could get footage of it, but the VN has good imagery as well
The Stringay division can Stand alone only with help of some Battleship and even being the most slow TFS they survive

Of course, it's planned. Have a few projects in the queue to take care of, but I'm raring to do that one. TSF vs TSF can be a lot more dynamic for these types of videos.
Okay looking towards for that
Having both distraction efforts fall back into the mountainous parts of the island was probably a critical strategic error. Think about it, if you’ve got comparatively limited numbers and guns vs unlimited numbers but no guns you are better served by large kill zones that give everyone clear lines of fire, the mountains on the western side would only serve to limit the numbers of TSFs that could engage and while it would also chokepoint the beta the aliums do not care about casualties.
the hive is a problem but I do not think the planned drop and infiltration should go ahewd, it’s literally never worked before with an intact hive so I don’t get why they kept throwing more lives away. It’s not their only option because option implies it has an acceptable chance of success.
Orbital Divers are cool, but it's a tragedy they practically never win. The entire diversion and infiltration was working perfectly, but man, they really REALLY didn't seem to think after killing +10000 BETA that another 50000 or so wouldn't pop up. Idk why that is, because they should have enough precedent to plan for BETA counterattacks like that. To be fair, nobody knew about the Carrier-Class beforehand though. But if they held off like you said, those Divers could've come in clutch AFTER the Susanoo fired. Just imagine.

Desde que lo vi por primera vez en la VN y luego en el anime que siempre me impresiono era la masiba cantidad de BETA que seguian saliendo de Sadogashima que parecia no tener fin
Aunque destruyan toda una horda y "limpien" la superficie de la isla salian mas y mas BETA desde el subsuelo
Nunca entendi el porque pasaba esto (ni encontraba respuesta en la Wikipedia que habla exclusivamente de Muv-Luv) incluso pense que las colmenas BETA podia avergar muchos mas BETA de lo que nos imaginabamos, que la Colmena 21 se estaba volviendo en Fase 5 justamente cuando ocurrio la Operacion 21 y por eso tenia mas BETA de lo normal o otra que la colmena empezo a producir de forma masiba y descontrolada BETA al considerar al Susano una amenaza y por eso habia tantos BETA en Sadogashima
Aunque despues de ver la parte uno y lo que dijiste al final del video, que todo esos BETA que aparecian masivamente en Sadogashima venian desde el continente atravez del tunel escapaba por el BETA clase carrier tiene bastante sentido ya que, como te comente en la parte 1, como el Carrier se lo vio por primera vez en Colmena Original pense que unicamente estos estaban apostado en esta colmena y siendo creados apartir de la informacion que enviaron los BETA del reactor de Yokohama siendo una clase de BETA muy resiente y no algo que ya existian hace tiempo
Por ultimo fue lo que ocurrio cuando unidad 00 desperto y que todos los BETA quedaron detenidos por ello como si el propio poder psiquico de 00 interumpia las comunicasiones de los BETA como si fueran un robot a control remoto el cual se corto su comunicasion quien lo manejaba quedando completamente inmobil
Bueno, de cierta forma los BETA son como robot pero de forma organica teniendo eso encuenta lo que ya dije y, tras la huida de los BETA remanentes de la Batalla Yokohama, los que no lograron escapar y no fueron destruidos por las propias fuerzas japonesa quedaron completamente detenidos al acabarse el G Elemento dentro de su cuerpo como un auto que se queda sin combustible

I think the theory is the most sensible conclusion that an in-universe historian would make. The Carrier swims and/or digs, carries +30000 BETA, and another +50000 or so could simply follow its huge tunnel.
As far as the BETA stopping, I personally have no clue why so I just made something up also based on what I think the average war historian might think. But I like what you've said, that it has to do with the 00 Unit's psychic abilities. Because she was also doing a reading on the hive, and after going haywire, her waking up could've disrupted them somehow.

@@commanderjango1487 In 2001, Yuuko estimated about 20 to 30 years to eradicate them from Earth. But they're still all over the moon and Mars too, and the fan sequel Exogularity depicted space campaigns many years in the future to reclaim those planets. Even then, BETA were believed to have been seeded all over the Milky Way and from whatever part of space they came from. Could be centuries until they are gone entirely, if you include space.
by the time the beta were first spotted on mars they were probably already on every moon and planetoid in the solar system and possibly even mercury and venus depending on their position when the beta first entered the system.
earth alone has just shy of 40 hives plus at least another dozen or two throughout the solar system.
on top of that the alpha unit in hive 01 confirmed that there are undecillions more main processing units like itself all over the galaxy giving the beta near infinite numbers.
survival for humanity is pretty much impossible when a new main processing unit could be send to earth at any moment.

True, as the B only had one method of attack. Being called the HI-MAERF, the entire concept was meant to culminate in the D model....and I wish we got to see the true, complete firepower it was meant to have. Just getting to see it lay waste to hordes of BETA on the battlefield outside Kashgar would've been amazing
i wonder how this would have played out if the US, soviet union, european union or any other nation for that matter sent forces to assist in operation 21st.
They definitely needed reserves, so if the Americans or Soviets could've thrown another division into the mix, Isumi definitely could've survived at the least.
@@yamamotomechbattles for sure and maybe the battle would have progressed differently as well. F22's or Terminators clearing the way. maybe the hive capture team was supported by other forces and had a chance to escape. would be a fun thing to explore.

It must've been engineers from "Boening" that designed the Susanoo's ability to, you know, stay airborne during its one job.
I think they shoukd built that rods from god, i think it will target hives and big numbers of BETAs
The reentry capsules of the Orbital Divers are rods of god. The rods alone without ground troops will essentially mean the BETA simply rebuild their numbers and upper entrances of the hives again. But having the reentry shells double as high velocity weapons means that immediately after their impact, TSFs will suddenly appear and will have dozens of new entrypoints into the hive.

Barely. Culling operations like Operation Neptune are usually tactical victories. They're essentially raids to thin out BETA numbers so they won't begin migrating into human territory. Unfortunately, they require a lot of resources, such as ammo, fuel, and manpower and they don't result in taking back any ground. All of those resources might better be used for hive capture missions, like how the fleets were running out of ammo even after shelling so much. But hive capture missions, as shown, always go to hell anyway.
It's a shame the can't use those fancy super nukes more

RIP Cpt. Isumi Michiru, It's really sad when you think about it, Her death was never officially explained because she was part of Alt IV.
A suggestion for future videos :
Do you know a channel called Templin Institute ? They basically have a reimagined series where they take a movie or game like star wars, and they make their own version of how things would go using in universe lore but at the same time they make it so that the bad guys and good guys have their own struggles to overcome. So it's not an instant win for the good guys.
Maybe you could do the same here with Muv - Luv, the Beta War but your own version of it.
Yeah I've watched their channel. That's a great suggestion. When I start getting to the end of canon content, I definitely plan to keep going with speculative content. I never played the games so tell me. What differed enough for the events of the day after to occur? Also i reread some wiki's about it. were they able to defeat the last hive and achieve some sort of peace or just buy themselves time?
You should try giving the VNs a read and experience it firsthand. It's worth it rather than having me spoil but...from what I can recall, in TDA, Sadogashima ended in failure but instead of detonating the Susanoo, they were actually forced to allow a G-Bomb strike. As a result, instead of there being strong arguments on both Alt4 and Alt5 doctrines, Alt5 was treated as objectively better. Alt4 gets scrapped as it does in all the timelines that fail, and a few years later (around 2004 I believe), Operation Babylon is launched. This is Alt5's version of the original trilogy's Operation Cherry Blossom (or Ouka, as some of us call it). Rather than a conventional, worldwide diversionary attack, Babylon starts off by bombarding all hives with G-Bombs. This gives them victory, but creates the continental gravity anomaly and severe changes to the weather. Then TDA occurs.
As for the Original Hive, after Operation Cherry Blossom it doesn't achieve peace, but it allows for the tide of the war to turn. From that point, it's predicted the BETA will be defeated on Earth in 20 or 30 years, before they will have to take efforts to retake the Moon and Mars as well.

Too many. It seems that any time a hive is invaded by humans, the BETA from all other nearby hives and regions go into rage mode and counterattack.

@@vin7490 Yeah I think that's what happened at Sado. During Palailogos, in the Codex, the same thing happens once they infiltrate the hive. The BETA start getting aggressive and counterattacking from elsewhere and underground like crazy

@@joshuajoaquin5099 I read about it a while ago. I could try covering it at some point. There isn't much given on unit positions and their role. But tanks and artillery are very effective against BETA, their only flaw is that they aren't fast enough to get out of the way -- but airpower can thin out enough BETA so that tanks can hold their ground. Remove air power, and the tanks can only fire so much until overrun. That's why the Chinese did alright, plus I'm sure they must've been somewhat prepared because the US had already fought the BETA on the moon by that point

Yeah that's one side of the argument after this mission. Pro-G Bomb factions were like, "I told you so" but pro Susanoo factions pointed out how they successfully mapped all BETA hives and the super weapon's trial run demonstrated it had the potential for success without the drawbacks of using G-Bombs each battle.
