Heh, when you mentioned the timing of the movie's release, I thought you were going to bring up the "Audiences don't want to see their heroes wreck up a city so soon after Nine Eleven" thing... I wasn't even thinking of 3D animation so much, more just that I could imagine the average moviegoer seeing the show's simple art style and writing it off as "cheap" compared to what they're used to seeing in cel animation on the big screen. That's interesting how you mentioned the Professor's arrest not lasting long enough to make an impression, now that I've seen the earlier versions of some scenes they released. Like in the scene where the Girls were gathering rare components for Mojo Jojo's machine, he actually named those things out loud rather than it being a music-only montage, but more importantly, Professor Utonium was already back at home, taking phone calls where he denied that the Girls would do such scavenging. So it would seem the original plan was for the Professor to be released from jail even _sooner._ I thought the reasoning for the change was more that it made a better excuse for the Professor letting all this happen than his just being that dense, but some argue that the early version better justified his sense of betrayal after sticking up for them so long. Oh hey, if you want to talk TV-cartoons-to-theatrical-movies from even earlier, there was the Jetsons movie from 1990 and the Felix the Cat movie from around the same time! Felix hadn't had an animated series in thirty years at that point, though...
I never got into PPG, I dismissed it as a girls show (while hypocritically watching mlp at the time, I was like 9-10) but I've heard it's really good. It's a Tartakovsky work, it HAS to be great! Shame the movie didn't do so well, but at least it tried, better than the reboot.
tbh i also thought the same thing as a kid whenever I saw promos with power puff girls that can also be an attribute to the movies failure seeming like a girls ip also PPG was created by Craig McCraken but technically Tartakovsky did work on the show and movie i would prefer the movie over the reboot any day lol
My main issue with "The Powerpuff Girls Movie" was how frankly unambitious it is. The show was CN's biggest property at the time, and instead of making a NEW story with a new badguy to fight, this movie is literally just the shows intro for 90 minutes.
True, I also remember Steve Reviews mentioning in one of his videos that there weren't that many people in the theaters to see it, specifically young boys bc it was, well, the power puff girls, I'm pretty sure it would've been a success if it were simply a tv movie just so people at the time could watch it and not be judged
10:21 actually, they did act behind the Professor's back to help Mojo! Many times! But those scenes were cut, and there were some rearrangements too. In the film, the Professor gets out of jail after Mojo's lair has been finished. But in the original cut, he came out of jail before all that! You learn this by listening to the DVD's audio comentaries by Craig McCracken.
12:32 The bad marketing for The Iron Giant wasn’t 100% WB’s fault. When the movie was completed, Warner Bros. wanted to release it at a later date, so they can have time to market the film and release at a more profitable time. Brad Bird was worried that if WB held off on releasing the film, it would become unreleased and rot in the vaults. He insisted that WB go ahead and release it, without the marketing deals being finalized, leading to the lack of marketing. There’s a documentary about the film where Brad himself admits that this wasn’t the right decision. Considering the awful Coyote vs ACME situation, the film being completely shelved could’ve been a possibility.
You said there wasn’t a show that match PPG? Did you forget Adventure Time was on pair with SpongeBob during early 2010’s? Yeah it petter out but you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing a Adventure Time shirt and such. There’s also Steven Universe while not having the same reach as PPG it was still a big hit for CN as for other shows like Ed Edd N Eddy, Ben 10 and TTG I mean TTG wouldn’t be going on for 10 years and have a movie if it wasn’t popular with kids. Also when mentioning why the movie flop you didn’t really mention that parents probably didn’t want to pay money to watch something that there kid can see for free at home on TV that’s like the main reason we don’t get cartoon movie anymore
Well yeah that’s true I probably should’ve gone over that part as well Also I did forget to mention the something you can see on tv for free bit I was actually gonna use a Simpson’s movie clip to explain it but i just forgot about it This video is definitely not my best if I’m being honest
Not just the growing popularity of CGI Animated Movies, WB’s Poorly Done Marketing (though The Lack of Advertising outside Cartoon Network and Adult Swim did hurt), and People thinking The Powerpuffs are just for Girls 1. WB seemed to favored The Live Action Scooby Doo Movie more and gave it more attention 2. The Memory of 9/11 was very fresh and Powerpuff Girls action scenes most of time involve City Destruction 3. And It was released on A 4 of July Weekend, was a bad time to be released, I mean, Look at this, (2 Months before it was Spider-Man, 1 Month before it was Scooby-Doo and Lilo and Stitch, and on The Same Day was Men in Black 2 and Like Mike)
in Marvel/Dc u can be arrest if you refer to the Powerpuff Girls as superheroes. Remember, they're crime-fighting forces of nature, not vigilantes. Any attempts to label them as superheroes will result in serious consequences and Avengers and Justice League will go war to cartoon network if they dare to use powerpuff girls has a superhero thing!
Not to mention it was released at the same time as notable films like Men in Black 2 did Warner Brothers was busy with their live-action film of Scooby-Doo not to mention Lilo and Stitch and another cartoon going to the big screen hey Arnold if it succeed then Ed edd n Eddy regular Show Steven universe and we bare bears would all be at the big screen right now
I think if it were released spring/summer of 2003 with a new storyline instead of a origin story, it may have performed better. But at the same time, 3D animation was more demanded and marketed around this time.
Recess is a fantatsic show it is absolutely hilarious. All the episodes are on Disney Plus. It's about kids who basically have their own mini society on the playground and they sort of act like mini adults despite being kids. Its hilarious.

I think it would’ve worked way better as a made for TV movie. It wouldn’t have had a ton of the issues it had if it was just a TV movie
Same it definitely would’ve worked better as that

Is it just me, or is this the only Warner Bros. movie that hasn't been released on digital?
