    Every apt rehab I do with new floors I do this. Makes removing doors way easier than gluing it directly to the floor. Nicely done.

    Maybe use the weight of the door to temporarily hold the guide in place to give time for the glue to cure

    Thanks for this video! I don't want to drill holes into my hardwood floor, so I think this solution will work well

    Does this still hold up 1 year after?

    I want to install barn doors and was looking for a way to avoid drilling into my vinyl floor in case one day i decide I no longer want the doors there, and found your video. Reading the comments I saw you responded to someone about using a dryer to remove a broken guide. Do you think, using your method here, that should I decide to remove the guide a couple years down the road that I would be able to remove it without messing up the floor? Thanks so much for the video! (female studying up for her first DIY project and trying to think ahead.)

      Certainly it would be removable, but would this sealant be strong enough to handle the stress if the doors are opened and closed often. That's the question. It may be worth a try.

    Same method should work on vinyl floors too...right?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic

      Sure should work on vinyl just fine, although you can drill into it if you wish.

    How is the floor able to flow even the bottom is only glued to the plank with the top of the door is secured. Please explain and thank you

      The floor will shift only a very small distance. This will not affect the caulk- attached floor guide.

    The door that's in front got out of the floor guide and it's hard to put it back in, is there a way for it to put it back in place

      This type of door rides in rail up above and it must have come out of the rail. It needs to be rehung from inside the closet.

    Mine is a sliding door with metal rail on the bottom. Will it work if l glue the metal rail on the laminate floor.

      It should although I'm not familiar with that design. And I used clear caulk, which is removeable, not glue.

    So if the doors fit without the plywood, then you don’t even need the screws right?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That"s correct. Just apply caulk directly to the divider.

      I know you commented a year ago but man that’s exactly what I was thinking. I have this issue with my closet in my kids room and have been looking all over for what the hell people are doing for this issue. This dudes solution is tacky as fuck.

    Any suggestion on how to remove a broken one that was installed this way?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would use a blow dryer to soften up the silicone and then remove it with a plastic trowel or similar tool.

    How would you install one that sits on half carpet (concrete under) and half tile?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've done one on carpet over concrete. I outlined the floor guide on the carpet and cut it away to the concrete below. Then I made a little wood shim and screwed the guide to it. Finally I used the silicone to affix the guide to the concrete. Not sure how your tile would affect that scheme.

      this is great, but now, what does the glue do to the laminate floors?

    • @neightarch
      @neightarch 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vickiebailey2679 nothing, it will not react to the sealant.

    • @jas18320
      @jas18320 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Even if the doors looked good, and used decent wood instead of plywood… still looks like you Jerry rigged something. Shouldn’t have that much of a gap to begin with. There are codes that come with their own riders that look normal. And there are guides that are decorative and actually look good. 3M def a better look.
