    Hi Both! GREAT video!! i have a D4 2011 SDV6 HSE with 122,000 miles on it.My power steering felt heavy so i checked all bushing and ball joints and all were good, tyre pressures correct too..... so i decided to do a Power steering fluid change as in the manual it suggested that heavy steering could be fluid related. I followed your video (using a large funnel taped to the top of the reservoir, and an air line connector from the return pipe to some hosepipe into a 5 litre container) and it worked a treat! Three interesting things i noted... 1. The fluid i removed was extremely dirty (almost black) and smelled burned...... (i removed the reservoir and cleaned it with petrol too - it was not too bad but needed cleaning). 2. The pump is always pumping so as soon as i started the car it began draining the funnel of new liquid and its VERY quick in draining it - fortunately two of us were doing it and we kept filling it quickly! 3. the power steering now feels as should do! no idea why this would make such a difference - but it does. I bought my Power Steering fluid from the Main Franchised JLR dealer which they supplied as: RAVENOL SSF Cold Climate Power Steering Fluid - Landrover STC50519 which is what they use. Lovely green liquid.(£18.30 per litre including VAT). Removing the headlamp and loosening the coolant tank gave great access to the clips/hoses on the bottom of the reservoir too! Without this video i think i would not have had the confidence to do it myself AND would have had oil everywhere - fantastic team - keep up the really excellent work.

    2014 LR4HSE LUX- Today I did a power steering flush and fill, and an engine oil and filter change! Very satisfying day, and all went well (with no OMGs) thanks to the confidence you instill in your viewers. If you see it done it is so much easier to do. Now I have Power Steering fluid up for sale for Toyota owners! Your videos are interesting, entertaining and educational!- thank you!

    This is the second LR video I've seen in the space of a week where I curse the design of the ARB front bar. Cant get the headlight out without removing the bar. It's always a treat to watch you two, and currently I've not even got a Discovery! I have a tip for anyone that's ended up with stubborn to shift air in their power steering system. Usually just gently steering all the way to one side and then the other a few times works, but if it doesn't, find a way to apply a slight vacuum to the reservoir whilst repeating the above. I use a MitiVac. Even a slight vacuum makes any air bubbles bigger and easier to dislodge and rise to the surface.
    Also I have a three cylinder generator with a SAME engine which I believe is a clone of the Duez you found. I assume the engine is to power a vibration function on the roller?
    As ever, all very best wishes from the U.K. Diesel £1.81p at my usual Esso petrol station BTW.

    Great job, as always! I like seeing the preventative maintenance jobs as much as the repairs.
    Here in New Jersey, diesel dropped this week from 5,69USD to 5,19USD per gallon at my local station. You guys in Germany [and Europe in general] are going to have a tougher time with fuel prices for a bit, but I think it's for the greater good. The US prices have shot up as well, but this needs to be done. Stay safe.

    If I ever buy a Citroen Xm V6 with the brilliant Diravi power steering (lookup how that works!), I’ll contact you for refurbishing it. They are the No 1 in the world for leaking (usually within 100k kms and badly with the super high pressure hydraulic system) and no one has been able so far to refurbish them… Note: this issue is typical for the Xm, not the CX.
    Hint: typical manufacturing tolerance is around 0.001mm.
    In other words: I love your custom engineering that makes standard jobs special!

    I very seldom comment on videos. However, I have to say, I really enjoy watching yours, they are really helpful. I wish your LR3 was a 4.4 ltr engine instead of a diesel engine. We don't get the diesel option here in the US. I love my LR3, except when I have to feel up with gas... Watching your videos allows me to keep her up to par. Yes, she is high maintenance but that is true for most good-looking girls, lol.
    I used to own a D1, I neglected her for too long, and it became too expensive to bring her back to roadworthiness. I sold it as scrap and I regret it ever since. Especially when I learned that people are paying good money for them nowadays and mine was a beautiful red D1 50-anniversary edition. I'm not doing that to my LR3.
    Besides the engine videos, everything else is applicable. I love your German engineering precision, even if it is less than the Japanese precision, and in my personal opinion, it is also more than American precision in many ways, although German engineering tends to get too complicated sometimes when simple tends to be better...
    Anyhow, my point is that your videos are very useful and they help me a lot in keeping up with my LR3. Please keep up the great work. Cheers!

    I did this about 5k miles ago on my Freelander 2. I used the same method as BevisPits. I used the new and old reservoir together to flush the new fluid through the new and out of the old until it came out clean. I did pump it as you guys did by turning over the engine, but later worked out any bubbles. There really were no bubbles for me. It worked great and the steering is quiet and should now last a lot longer.

    I did this just recently on a range rover sport. You don't need to turn the car on, Jack the front wheels off the ground and just turn the wheel left full lock then right, it will flush out the same way, I just kept filling up the reservoir and had a line out on the return line into a clear container, you get x2 full lock left and right before you refill the reservoir, about 4 times and the fluid came out clear.

    Hi Christian and Vera, great video!
    I flushed mine through with the front wheels raised off the ground and the engine off. Turning the wheel left to right fluid started to run clear after about 1 and three quarter litres of fluid.
    I find it less worrisome with the engine off as there is less chance of introducing air into the system... obviously still need to keep checking the level in the reservoir as you go 😊

    • @shaunbava1801
      @shaunbava1801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't matter if you let it run dry with the engine off. Just pull the return line from the pump and let it drain, turn the wheel lock to lock, add a liter of ps fluid and run it through, turning lock to lock. Reattach the line, refill and bleed by turning lock to lock usually 5 times is enough, then start the engine so the pump runs and turn lock to lock multiple times and any remaining air will bleed. The big issue is having the pump running dry, if you manually bleed while the engine is off it is fine. I've done this 4 times this way without issues.

    • @any0n378

    • @shaunbava1801
      @shaunbava1801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@any0n378I'm not to the "German" level of auto repair, but it works just the same. I actually the first three times just pulled the line and drained the whole thing without flushing and refilled it and bled it with the engine off just fine. My fluid was really nasty though so while it got a lot better the last time I pinched the return line with vice grips ran some fluid through until it was clear, then just removed the vice grips, reattached the hose, refilled the ps reservoir, did the manual bleed turning the wheel lock to lock with the engine off and then with the engine on. I didn't replace the reservoir but if you wanted to after you drain reattach the hose you can do it at that point before refilling. This technique is pretty universal you can do it on any car and if you have 2 people it works best but in the LR you can totally drain it no issues as long as it isn't running and it bleeds the air pretty easily.

    Those of us with Toyotas don't need regular power steering fluid changes because the pumps always leak so the fluid is constantly being replaced. I see you are being ripped off by the oil companies as well as us although we are still considerably cheaper here in the UK, Diesel has gone up around 30 pence in the past two weeks even though the price of crude has dropped in the same time scale. I did see Holland and Belgium are above 2.50€ a litre now. Another great video and a nice way to spend half an hour on a Sunday afternoon, keep them coming.

    Changing steering pump fluid. WOW. Mea Culpa, I have never changed brake fluid except when a cylinder fails and then it gets flushed through as part of the repair. Steering fluid never ever changed at all. Also never had problems. Engine oil gets changed once a year when the vehicle is serviced apart from last year when the garage advised not to bother with a service at all. Well 124Km in 1 year a service is pointless.

    Question I didn't see when quickly browsing through the responses: Did Vera notice any difference driving the car after the oil change????

  • @Verschlimmbesserung
    @Verschlimmbesserung ปีที่แล้ว

    The most German car maintenance I've seen😅, everything is thought out to the smallest detail, not a drop of oil on the ground, and correcting the procedures in the vehicle manual.
    I have done this on my Audi A4 but the lazy way: unfastened the return line and ran the system dry, which is a no no.
    Best wishes from Bulgaria.

    You might want to get your paperwork in early for more trees. I think there will be a lot more people looking for firewood next winter (unfortunately).

    Thank you for your great LR3 videos's guy's, from an Aussie and I must say, I love how you throw in Australian 'dig' occasionally :) I am currently installing air horns on my LR3. Are you able to possibly do a video on how you would wire up an aftermarket accessory, such as an air horn or light bar or spot lights, where you require a switch in the cabin and the accessory is in the engine bay or mounted externally like spot lights would be. I have struggled to find a way to safely run a wire through the fire wall of my LR3. Thanks again from Auz

    That's quite a long distance for the original fluid; if it makes you feel any better, power steering exchange is not on the maintenance schedule for my Toyota but I did it anyway

      👍Make sure that Disco has been maintained properly, with an oilchange every 10000km. If not, stay away from that car. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera
