Boy am I glad I clicked into this show. What a fantastic little sitcom! Bonnie's great, as are most of the cast, and the writing and delivery of lines is top grade. Shoulda been a hit!
@@danmandic6935But most of her shows that she was involved in as creator writer producer and often director people’s except me and other lovely sane people who love humor never got. I still need to see the series she made Apple TV now.
The weekly Nielsen ratings for "The Building": * Episode 1 (August 20, 1993): 8.0/16, 11.1 million viewers, 50th out of 84. * Episode 2 (August 27, 1993): 4.9/9, 6.9 million viewers, 81st out of 86. * Episode 3 (September 3, 1993): 5.4/11, 7.9 million viewers, 81st out of 91. * Episode 4 (September 10, 1993): 5.3/10, 7.2 million viewers, 85th out of 89. * Episode 5 (September 17, 1993): 5.2/10, 7.1 million viewers, 85th out of 89. It had an average 5.8/11 rating/share and 8.04 million average viewers. By today’s standards, that would easily be enough for renewal, but by 1993 standards, no Big 3 network show had a chance to survive.
What a great, little show. Smart and quick writing, with a massive amount of attention to detail in the writing, timing and physical blocking. Very much a theater performance with cameras. You could see a lot of I Love Lucy and Honeymooners influence. I have to imagine this was a massively personal project for Bonnie ... in terms of wanting to produce something she loved, achieve something grand, and in content. Although you can see why it wasn't particularly commercial. Dave's scene was hilarious.
Bonnie wrote every episode of this show before she had a production company or a TV deal. I just watched a podcast she was on recently and she talked about this project.
Probably for sexist portrayal of women. We don't realise, but a lot of the stuff we consumed in the 90s/00s was actually feminist stuff. Like Sabrina the Teenage Witch. As boys we'd have never thought twice about it, but the adult female cast were determined to make it a respectable thing for all the girls. And they did in a really good way, cos you don't even notice it. But anyway, my point is this stuff has been going in for longer than you realise. I'd wager this was cancelled cos it goes against the general feminist message that was being spread
This is awesome. I remember watching this show. I thought it was one of the funniest shows I’d ever seen. Watching it tonight, I’ve laughed out loud multiple times. Sorry it didn’t last...
I've only seen the first minute so far, and I love the Laverne and Shirley vibes. Bonnie Hunt is a real gem and I'm thrilled to see something of her's I haven't seen before! I would marry that Chicago broad in a New York minute.
I've loved Bonnie since I discovered her talk show. I didn't know anything about this show. I am laughing out loud throughout the show. She is absolutely fantastic!!! Ok f course all of the other wonderful talented people on the show. Great show!!!!!!!
38:13 - I'll bet the only way David Letterman agreed to appear in this was that he remain anonymous throughout the whole episode which included wearing the mask the entire time, and being listed as only "The Thief" in the ending credits.
Bonnie's so talented and genuine; this is a delight to watch again. (Also, since Bonnie can sing, does anyone know if that's her singing with the other singers [the cast?] for Rob Kolson's "The Building" theme song?)
September 17, 1993, the series finale. I actually recorded this episode starting @ 1:46:09, I had it on VHS but sadly it's long gone. 25 years, ah, memories!
It's weird that I don't remember this show. I guess I had a lot going on at the time. I was planning my wedding, and I moved halfway across the country, but I usually remember sitcoms.
A great and underappreciated talent. Definitely a Honeymooners vibe to this show. Bonnie adds the pathos like Jackie Gleason did. Too bad it wasn't given more time on the air.
I may be in the minority here, but I found there is an absolute pain to watch. barely any laughs, boring characters, and a studio audience just absolutely not doing anything.
If people who have watched much improv are honest, they will admit that the moments of brilliance bookend long stretches of dull and often cringey nothingness. There's a reason why scripts are written and rehearsals are held.

I watched an old interview of her and Tom Snyder. She said all her TV shows were improvised to some extent.
It’s cool she worked with the same actors on all her projects.
Loyalty!!! I love that!! Plus they know how to keep up with her☺️☺️☺️
Bonnie Hunt. Underappreciated talent
I absolutely love Bonnie Hunt. Having watched episode one my love is only multiplied.
This is hysterical. I don't remember ever seeing this show.
Maybe like me, you blinked. 😉 #FiveEpisodes
I love Bonnie.Never understood why she didn't have more success.
She's had a great career. She's been in dozens of films (lots of animated films as a voice actor)
She has been in some of the biggest movies The Green Mile, Cars amount two

The scene with her Dad made me cry. Very well done.

Thanks for this, Don! I never saw this before but I just watched the whole thing and greatly enjoyed it. Much above the bar for sitcoms in any era.

Dave's scene was hilarious.
She's so Faithful to her long time Friends. She Always Found a way to write a Part for Holly, Don and Richard!
PS there was a school strike in September '93, school was delayed by a week. I was going into 6th grade.
Well said. Very funny stuff. Bonnie very talented and drew from classic comedy stylings

Don't understand why this show didn't make it. Great writing and such likeable characters!
Probably the powers that be didn’t like it for some reason!!! 😩

Love Bonnie trying not to laugh when Dave says, "Am I the dumbest man on the planet?"
This was one adorable show. I never heard of it. Thanks for posting.
I was going to rip all of these from my old VHS tape and gosh darnit if you didn't have them up. Outstanding.

Bonnie Hunt is a funny sweet gorgeous angel!!! 😍😍😍😍
I've loved Bonnie since I discovered her talk show. I didn't know anything about this show. I am laughing out loud throughout the show. She is absolutely fantastic!!! Ok f course all of the other wonderful talented people on the show. Great show!!!!!!!
1993, the last year that George Clooney was not the George Clooney.
...cameo appearance as a jerkface.
Thank God for Pants... and Bonnie Hunt!
Love Bonnie Hunt!
I love Bonnie Hunt. And Episode 1 is terrific. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
AWESOME!!! Thanks!!!
Best I've seen Dave in years.
38:13 - I'll bet the only way David Letterman agreed to appear in this was that he remain anonymous throughout the whole episode which included wearing the mask the entire time, and being listed as only "The Thief" in the ending credits.
Brilliant writing.
She was also really good in a series called "Davis Rules" with Jonathan Winters.
I loved the Building!! Yes I do live my life in a B&W Movie
Bonnie's good pal David Letterman makes his entrance as the masked robber at 38:10.
The Bonnie episodes of Letterman are great!
I remember this show and I remember loving it. Bonnie Hunt was the original Tina Fey and deserved a far bigger star than the industry afforded her.
I remember this show it was very good.
Damn! Bonnie Hunt so Pretty..
Yeah huh
Watching this show makes me feel good. Don't know why it didn't make it. 😢
Love Bonnie Hunt! Great actress and comic! ❤
Ha! David Letterman in a ski mask!
Nice upload Don!
The love mechanic is great. "Dump her! "
Who is watching in 2024 😅

Bonnie is Also Moe!

up until 1:47:14 with the Billy Shoe show.
1:56:19 A Second City Alumnus as Billy Shoe, I guess James "Jim" Belushi didn't want to use his name in the credits?
Thanks for this! Have you seen the unaired sixth episode?
Thanks! No, I haven't. I understand that it exists somewhere.
@39:18 Dave to Bonnie: "Shut up!" LOL!!!
Is that Dan aykroyd on the answering machine?
TGI Friday 9/17/21, the series ended 28 years ago tonight.
1:32:50. for episode 5
Her neighbor's family all have the same name: Tony, Antoinette, Anthony and Tony. LOL
Sunday 9/17/23 the series ended 30 years ago tonight.
1:32:50. for episode 5.
While the show earned good reviews from critics, it brought in low ratings.
I liked the Holly character. She sort of reminds me of Don Gordon in the Steve McQueen movies.
It's weird that I don't remember this show. I guess I had a lot going on at the time. I was planning my wedding, and I moved halfway across the country, but I usually remember sitcoms.
great
Is that Ruta Lee in the dress shop?
A great and underappreciated talent. Definitely a Honeymooners vibe to this show. Bonnie adds the pathos like Jackie Gleason did. Too bad it wasn't given more time on the air.
big names cameo appearances
Norm from CHEERS & Jim Belushi
David P. Letterman as the robber!
5:01 Fake Harry Caray speaking.
Clooney!
The Building should've premiered in the fall of 1993.
The Thief as the Thief. Cute. Could've said The Thief as Himself or used Earl Hofert.
The Thief as The Thief
Lois Griffin!
Wow. Seinfeld & FRIENDS made all these kinds of shows look stale as a dinner roll from 1971 .
Interesting that Letterman's mouth didn't move. Guess it was the ski mask.

@@dlxmarks but you can’t teach chemistry and respect. Those things can cover it up.
With that said, I thought it was a bit scripted even though they did improvisational stuff.
