I will never get tired of watching people preserve gaming machines. Ever. In my opinion, these machines are so important. It isn't just a game console, it was very likely someone's childhood, someone's escape from the real world. Every new gaming generation is a snapshot in time; a functioning, tangible record of technological progress for the era.

The Saturn was supposed to capitalized on the growing succes of Arcade centers in Japan. Most of the games were 2D so the Saturn was initially planned as mostly a 2D system. 3D came after, because of Sony. It's because it was added to a 2D architecture that the Saturn was difficult to program for 3D games... Let's not forget that we are not talking about today's 3D too... Of course games look amazing on modern systems. mowadays, but go back to the first Playstation games and tell me what you rather play, a primitive 3D Playstation game or a beautiful 2D game on Saturn? Yep, after a war, it's easy to pick up the winner...

God the intro always scared me because of how loud it was. I'll just sit there tryna play sonic while vibin, then that loud ass intro plays and makes me jump
It is permanent. This process just essentially bleaches the very outer surface for the very short term. You don't even need the UV light strips. That's just something youtubers do to make it look like some highly technical process. It's really no different than gargling with hydrogen peroxide to whiten your teeth. The yellowing will return very quickly unless you keep the console completely shielded from light, and even then it will yellow again within a few months at best.
@@hudz48 First off you would get the same result with just hydrogen peroxide, but decomposing the hydrogen peroxide does speed up the process significantly. However UV light is by far the least efficient and slowest method of achieving decomposition. He's already using electricity which is by far the most efficient method of providing the energy needed for decomposition. UV light is an alternative method of providing that energy but an incredibly inefficient and slow method that has no statistically significant impact on the speed of the process when you're already using heat and/or electricity to accomplish decomposition. It's just something companies add to their kits to make them seem more technical and more impressive; and something youtubers love to show because they think it makes them appear all "sciency". But it's such an irrelevant part of the system that it's almost purely for show.

I'd love to see a restoration of a Nintendo Gamecube, as I got one myself of which the button to open up the disc reader isn't working properly anymore. Same with one of the controllers of which the right trigger button doesn't work anymore. Maybe with a few pointers I'd be able to repair it myself!

Despite a lack of dialog audio, the sound is and video is clear and to the point. Intact, the lack of audio dialog further highlights the sounds and shots. Very nice.

The first Odd Tinkering video i came across, and I’ve been a fan ever since! Nowadays I like to imagine this video is Tails in his workshop fixing his company’s console

I just recently imported a Saturn from Japan … Idk if it’s the Japanese culture or what … but every SEGA related item I bought from there came in almost brand new condition lol Despite the yellowing my console looks brand new , It’s always pretty quite when it runs games , I am extremely grateful they take pride and care in there items unlike my country (cough cough America ) :D
Always be careful with the power supply. That big capacitor on the primary side could still be charged and cause painful burns if you accidently touch its contacts
It's a problem with all lasers, they will all eventually die,. In fact the saturn had a very good laser that is a relatively standard part, the JVC optima 6. Almost every Saturn has this laser, the only exception is the rare Hitachi and sanyo drives
"Can you guess what I'm going to restore next?" Hopefully the controller, between the yellowing and the clacking. I haven't heard that much clacking since my last typing class.
There is just something about watching these after a hard work day that is relaxing.. More so if there is yellow to take away. 😅 👌 Needless to say I'm excited for this one.
I actually JUST did a recap on a Game Gear, and it's a bunch of SMD soldering. I've seen a dozen videos on it (the Retro Repairs guy has a pretty good one I think). Now, if he installed a McWill mod and and a lipo battery pack I would be down for watching that because a lot of the videos skip steps on those just because of how long they take to do.
I would like to note to anyone trying to dissasemble consoles like these, be careful when touching the power supply. I was trying to troubleshoot a dead Original Xbox once and I had the console disassembeled while still plugged in. I accidentally nuged the power supply while reaching in and nearly passed out from the electric shock. Please be careful, power supplys kill.
So I was doing this step by step however BEWARE at 8:23 I used Soapy Water instead of Watery Soap and needless to say the whole project was ruined.
Diluted soap is even worse.

I actually JUST did a recap on a Game Gear, and it's a bunch of SMD soldering. I've seen a dozen videos on it (the Retro Repairs guy has a pretty good one I think). Now, if he installed a McWill mod and and a lipo battery pack I would be down for watching that because a lot of the videos skip steps on those just because of how long they take to do.

I would like to note to anyone trying to dissasemble consoles like these, be careful when touching the power supply. I was trying to troubleshoot a dead Original Xbox once and I had the console disassembeled while still plugged in. I accidentally nuged the power supply while reaching in and nearly passed out from the electric shock. Please be careful, power supplys kill.
