Chicken feeder, Living greens feeder for poultry or rabbits...

  • I have finely make up a "Living Green Feeder" for the girls pen. A friend, tar Rosie, put me onto them a few years ago but I have kept putting it off.. This was a very easy build & only took me about an hour to make & install.. I think a basic one could be made from items such as upturned bread crates.. I think this design or a similar one would also be great for rabbits confined to a large hutch...

      I'm with you on this one. Whenever someone mentions feeding chickens I think of this video and tell them about it. I just shared it on another channel again today. Simple, inexpensive and can save a lot in feeding costs, especially if you use a perennial. Why wouldn't anyone do this?

    Good idea we have similar made of pallets. If you turn it the other way round, and make it bigger you could set up a chicken tractor and put them in it and move them across any lawn/grass you have. It looks from your set up as if you have a lot of predators around your coop. I have all ours free-ranging but they have to have constantly enough greenery otherwise they will start on the plants. I also have bantams with small feet so they do less damage and a lot of pest control. All the best, Sue

  • @RobsAquaponics
    @RobsAquaponics  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great question & something I gave a bit of thought to.. The idea behind the extra hight was that if it were taller it would allow the plants to gain a better foothold with their roots so that they couldn't be pulled out as easily.. I thought this would allow the plants to be replaced less often.. The next one I build will be a bit lower & am also thinking of making one out of an old bird cage we have as well..

  • @RobsAquaponics

    There is a clip called "Black Solider fly larvae farm.. (Hermetia illucens)" that I posted a while back... The farm got flooded out during some really wet weather here recently so it needs to be set up again.. I shall be setting it back up as soon as the current weather clears.. I have some compost full of larvae I can use to give it a head start..
    Hope that helps & have a good one..

    What a GREAT idea for chooks that can't free range for one reason or another. I tried the "chicken tractor" bit, but as an older grandma, I can't always handle the moving to a new grassy area. I am going to incorporate this into my run as soon as I can. And then I won't have to beg my neighbors for their grass clippings or what ever I can cut from the side of the highway.

      +Denise Keith Does make it easier to feed the girls some greens Denise. I left the cage down long after the wheat died off last time & a load of weeds popped up. When I lifted the cage the girls went nuts on them.
      Cheers & all the best .

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a great idea for chickens that can't forage for greens otherwise. But there are so many advantages to a portable chicken pen (its really only a 'tractor' when used to till between garden rows). Anyway... it spreads the manure, helps keep grass and weeds, etc 'mown', and chickens are not constantly walking around in or pecking through their own waste, along with whatever kitchen waste and/or spilled grain, etc ends up in their pens.
      Ease of moving a portable chicken pen is important! Some use an old handtruck under one end. Many are designed & built with wheels on one or both ends. Hopefully you will be able to find one that fits your needs and is easy to move - or modify the one you have.
      If not, this idea is great for the immobile coop where the birds cannot be allowed to free-range in the day, isn't it?!

    Rob Bob, I love all your vids man, been learnin' quite a bit from your AP how-to's, but I can tell you all 24 of my girls are gonna love you for this! I've had to pen them back up since I planted the garden beds, they don't get free roam of the back acre anymore and they miss the grass and bugs! Gonna use some extra fencing I have to make a couple of these, maybe 8 or so feet long each. Thanks!

      Cheers & happy growing.

    My 8 ladies will love this. I had plan to do a fodder type method but now space indoors and it gets way to hot here in sw usa. For it to outside. This will work and keep them much cooler also. T.y.

    Great question. If you look at battery hens they live in worse conditions with loads of faecal mater in their cage & flying around the shed in the form of dust. They live in far more contaminated conditions that back yard chooks & re said to be "healthy" so I really don't worry about that sort of thing with ours.
    Have never read any information where it is suggested that any contamination could be past through their digestive system, into the eggs or flesh & then to us.
    Hope that helps,
    Rob :)

      Our girls demolished a few beds a couple of times before this went in. About to sow it out again to give the 2 remaining girls some greens.

    Rosietea saw one in action at the Backyard Aquaponics store in Perth Bobby & that's where I got the idea from..
    Not for everyone but as we don't free range I think this makes up for it a bit..
    Have a great one :)

    We have just under 700m²/765yard².. Not a big plot but think we could squeeze a lot more on there if we tried..
    Thanks & hope you have a great one..

    i really love this idea. i have seen similar idea in retirement village. only difference is that they had it for the whole floor. i thought it looked uncomfortable to the chickens and cruel. Great job !!
