. You might consider a canning funnel to minimize spillage when you are filling the feeder. A plastic one will run under $5 usually, cheaper at a garage sale or thrift store.. I can't pour out of a feed sack and hit a 4 inch hole.
Neither can I 😂 I tried a Poland spring gallon jug with the bottom cut out for a large funnel. Honest waste of time although it helped a little. Now the 5 gal. Jug mounted atop the pvc tube I found d is the ultimate funnel! Hope it helps !
Great idea! I did mine the almost same way! But I use elbows instead of Y’s reason is that with Y’s old some feed on the very bottom! And we all know that stuck feed tend to get rooted and smelly but all and all it’s a great idea thanks for the video buddy👍🏻👍🏻
They make pvc fitting plugs for the bottom and rubber or pvc caps for the top. No need to cut the wood plugs. Insert the lower plug backwards if you don't like the extra feed in the lower part of the Tee
Very neat work. I like that. I’m not sure if you made any improvements, but if I’m gonna use your design, I would also want to fill the feeders from outside the coop.

Don’t forget to pick up a wide mouth funnel to pour the feed into the pipe.. makes it go faster with no waste/mess.. I have this system.. works well.. I have a plug to put in to prevent bugs/rodents from getting into the pipe also..

I have a similar design used a sanitary Tee instead. Cut out a plug for the bottom used a bucket lid and the shoved a piece of pipe in after it works great.
I totally love all parts of your plywood plug hack but to be honest, the whole project was awesome, including being able to lift the unit off without unscrewing anything. I have NO chickens right now but, maybe... If I can make it all this easy, probably.
I did one pretty much the same but I see now I need to change the bottom pipe. My girls keep kicking food out. Your idea should stop this. Only thing I would comment is you should have filmed your girls eating from it!
Just a thought - why not cut PVC in 3 equal pieces instead of having leftover? Makes more room for feed. Same for angle bracket... maybe a bit more room for chickens at buffet!
JC Garcia good point, one thing I didn’t show in the video, but you can kinda see it in the cover photo, I actually used the scrap PVC and made little rain hats for each of the feed openings. For me, I had a limited space I was trying to fit it into so I was trying to keep it compact. That’s the only reason I didn’t use all of the angle bracket. But great comments! One thing I wish I had done differently is actually glue the bottom fittings to the pipe. I find I get just enough rain that runs down the legs and into the fittings to cause a little clump or feed there. Anyways thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback!
@@redbeardhomestead Instead of gluing the bottoms on, why not just run a bead of hot glue around the edge? It should seal just fine and the hens would not care :)
I was going to change to the y pipe. I used 4” pipe, then attached a 90 then attached a 45. Issue is when we get sideways rain the feed got all wet. I did install a plastic curtain that can be raised and lowered, but I might not always be around when it rains. I was thinking that y you have would work. I bought one yesterday but haven’t filled it yet. Which leads me to my question, does the food just pour out the y even facing the y up? I did originally have a T and it was 90 degrees and it just poured right out, never stopping.
I’ve never had an issue with feed running out. But if it is hung too low, the chickens will “scratch” it out and waste food. Hang it up high enough that the ladies can see into it. If you have young chicks then make sure you raise it up as they get older.
I haven’t had to yet, but as we get into the summer months upcoming I might add some in there if the water starts to look slimy. I have 8 chickens on the system and they drink (splash/waste) about 3 to 4 gallons a day. The barrel actually turns over pretty quick. I would definitely support the use of ACV if you think you need it though!!! Thanks for reaching out!!!
vaxcave that’s a great question, I haven’t honestly observed it being an issue here. Bugs for sure haven’t been, I would imagine the chickens would gobble them up. As far as rodents, I haven’t observed any evidence of them taking a snack break but I don’t have a camera on there to confirm.
@@redbeardhomestead Understood. I meant more at night when the chickens are in the coop rather than in the run. I don't want to introduce a rodent/insect infestation if I can avoid it. I might use a servo or something to link up with my coop door closing to cover the openings of the feeder.
That is a very good job done. Just one thing you did wrong, no one should ever use a table saw so carelessly. I hope you never have an accident with a saw because one slip and you change your life forever.

I would think if you cut the bottom edge off, it would allow for food to spill out. I have not had any issues with the chickens eating out of it. That’s the beauty of the adjustability. Set it low and raise it. You will know it’s too low when they keep knocking all the fees out of it.

That's just what they do. Our birds sli g food all over . We don't give them anymore feed till it's all gone. Works out great. No waste and still have very fat birds.
Edu16 totally agree! Took way longer than I anticipated, but once I made one, I liked the way it looked. And on the cost side, I pretty much used up a belt on the sander, so that’s at least the cost of one cap. Thanks for watching!

Get those chicks! Feed them in a catfood dish and get the regular chick water bottom, screws on a mayo jar or regular mouth glass jar.

Use a chop saw to cut PVC if you have it. Makes a clean cut. Not a miter saw that is made for wood. There is a difference.
I’m cheap but for $10 bucks I’d have bought the caps.

I use a scoop from tractor supply and let it poor out the corner… but you can use a canning funnel.

I’ve had as many as fifteen at one time. It takes about 3.5-4 gallons of feed, so the more chickens using it the more often it will need filled.
You have to pess the foot against your work. And whenever possible keep the factory cut end on the piece you keep.

The angle bracket is what thickness and what size bolt and how long?
The angle is maybe 1/8” thick. I think I used 1/4” x 1” bolts.
