    A lifetime of never hearing the words "chicken tunnel", now it's all over the place. It's almost as if TH-cam has an algorithm to send you to videos based on what you watched.

    I connected a 50 ft pallet fence to my chicken run this year to extend my yard then white washed it.Its beautiful! Now my yard is bigger and 3 sides of my chicken run can be protected by my dogs.The other side faces my house. Next spring I plan on attaching chicken tunnels to the pallet fence (on the inside) Connecting the tunnels to the inside of the fence hides them from public view, makes them stronger and better protects them from predators.Nothing can get on top on the chicken tunnels and crush them because the top of the tunnel is connected to the side of the fence.Out of sight out of mind.No one is able to see the tunnels in your yard (as long as they're up against the fence) If you planted shrubbery in front of the tunnels you can't see them from your house either.

    Great job. I made a chicken run like this one but I left the ground open so the birds could scratch without the fence under foot. I used metal post across th bottom edges of the fence every 8 ft or so. The birds love to scratch. Love your video. From Greensboro NC

      Oh, Hey from Rockingham County (Ruffin)
      I would also like to see yours. Ours ended up a square shape, I haven’t seen any drawbacks so far, except that I need to step wise to get over it or you will fall down and crush it twice consecutively 😂.

  • @mollycatcolorado9252
    @mollycatcolorado9252 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I’m seriously going to borrow your idea for my cats! All the other tunnels I’ve seen have an open bottom which would be a problem with one of my cats. Knowing his determination, he would dig out under the tunnel even if it had a million stakes to hold it down. Your tunnel makes it impossible for him to do that. Eventually I plan to get chickens, so I would love to also do tunnels around the edge of my garden for them.

  • @kayzeekayzee
    @kayzeekayzee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Great job, I really like the way you made it with enough height and width for them to still fit there when they get bigger, I've seen some other videos of chicken tunnels and they are small, short and really no space for them to move around comfortably.

    you could always drill a hole through the top split 2X4 and continue on through the plywood door into the other half of the 2X4. You could then stick a dowel or pencil through there, ensuring that nothing could lift that door.

    I watched this with the sound off, no cc, because I was listening to a different show on another device. Seemed pretty detailed, will do in the future for chicken tunnel or catio tunnel/walkway. I knew this is what I wanted, but not very good at putting things together, just see the finished product in my head, so this is awesome. I'm going to watch it again with sound. Hopefully, I can get my kid to watch so she'll help me build. Thanks for the video.

    the welded wire fencing has open spaces which are too large IMHO. I use 1/4" hardware cloth b/c desperate predators can reach through the fencing you are using in this video. Animals that can 'grab' will reach through and pull and eat on whichever part of your feathered babies they can reach. Your video is great and you do an awesome job explaining everything well. I'd just use something with smaller spaces between the wire.

    Well thought-out build. Hammer tip - great! I like the suggestion for cutting the wire and using the leftovers to tie it all together - perhaps every second one would be enough. It's given me some ideas - and you could square it off using the board and hammer if you wanted straight sides and a straight roof.

  • @cjhilton694
    @cjhilton694 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Chickens like to seriously dig around, so I think it would be so much better for them to have the tunnel floor free of wire and totally exposed so that they are better able to scratch the earth without the cumbersome wire barrier which greatly inhibits that activity, likely frustrating to them as well as possibly feeling real uncomfortable to their little soft feet pads, maybe even with the potential to cause a foot injury

    • @dachickenman281
      @dachickenman281  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love to be able to do that but, I move it around and rotate the position to give them fresh ground all the time! Honestly they pay that wire no attention at all. And I’ve never had one injure their feet. The wire is there for their protection without out it dogs that roam our neighborhood would make short work of them❤️

    I like this very much. Are you worried about the plywood door warping? I'm looking for a more . . . . shall we call it discreet? . . . . way to extend my run. I overbuilt my coop and made it look like a very attractive she-shed, but between chicken math and an eye to current world events I'm keeping a few (ha-ha) more girls than my city suggests.

    • @dachickenman281
      @dachickenman281  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lol I love your reply! As far as the door warping I not had that problem,(2 years) another reply mentioned using grey duct tape on the top edge to keep water from getting in.

      If you are concerned about the plywood warping, you can seal it with stain or paint. If you are in a really humid or rainy location, look for marine grade paint used on boats and wooden docks. Or, you could use a piece of UV treated acrylic/plastic or a sheet of metal.

    I'm planning on building one. I think your idea is better but your land is flat and mine is a hill so I'm figuring out what I can do that I can move easily and will curve with the land. Awesome job. I like yours. Seems sturdy!

    I did this twenty years ago but I attached the wire to the edges of the plank, makes a natural arch. Much easier on their feet to walk on wood. I also could make it go over obstacles, I called it the sky bridge😂

    Not sure anything is simpler than a nice sized chicken tractor on wheels that can be put where needed instead of a dedicated area that will become unkempt.

    Nice tunnel first one I saw that I think I truly like. Had thought of making a three way on end of first length before going on lawn. Three slide gates with mating pinned square transition so you can go left right or straight. Maybe easier to add flex tube at three way point.

    Hog ring pliers have a single groove on each side the wire(s) have to be inside to replace no it successfully, as long as you do that, they are amazing.

    Haha you made a sturdy door but the hog wire fencing has to wide squares , weasels ,cats and small Racoon can squeeze through the wire squares.

    • @dachickenman281
      @dachickenman281  ปีที่แล้ว

      True but since I’ve did the video I’ve placed smaller wire all around the bottom and… just to make sure I close them up every single nite in the coupe which it bullet proof ❤️

    • @user-ks2mc2oc8r

      1/4” hardware cloth is the only material that will protect your chickens. Atleast a foot skirted at the bottom all the way to the top. Just doing the bottom will not suffice. Predators will climb and get in the larger holes. Very expensive unfortunately but many of us have learned the hard way. Milk, measles, rats etc can fit through extremely small holes. Just don’t want people getting the wrong idea that their chickens will be safe with this type of enclosure 😢

    I don't have chickens yet but I am trying to get informed on building a coop, a run, and a chicken "chunnel" extension. I love that you didn't need to use any lumber for the tunnel part. I've seen where people build a wood or pvc frame then cover it with hardware cloth or fence. I'm just wondering if having the wire at the bottom will make it hard for the chickens to scratch around for insects? I'm new to all of this so I am genuinely asking. The ones I've seen mostly use ½ hardware cloth. But I see this one here is a fence with wider openings.

    • @dachickenman281
      @dachickenman281  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s very solid even not having a wood frame and less expensive! They are able to scratch and peck pretty good with the wire bottom but it’s there mostly to protect them from stray dogs in the neighborhood!❤️

    • @dachickenman281

    • @dachickenman281
      @dachickenman281  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes they are able to scratch to their hearts content! After several months dirt, debris, grass will accumulate above the wire allowing them to scratch and peck all they like 😊. Thanks for the sub. My next video tutorial will be a chicken tractor that will have another door at the end of the tunnel!
