This is how you take a concept that’s been done a thousand times and make it fresh baybeeeee. The drug addiction metaphors really spoke to me! Even the simple idea of her wanting to use the hand to see her mom is such a good metaphor for drugs being used to numb the pain of trauma.
"I'm not even a Christian" Great detail in the movie is the boyfriend is mentioned to be a Christian, that's why the spirit lunges at him in anger when he talks
So the spirit that was attached to Mia wasn't her mother, it was the spirit that stayed in her over 90 secs (the drowned woman) you can tell because you'd often hear the sound of water or drowning and the more you saw her mom she looked as if she was in water or bloated (the weaker the connection got the worse her moms image looked).
The part that gets me is knowing how extreme social media challenges have been so far, something like this would for sure get this much excitement. There was a period on youtube where ouiji board and haunted building content was BOOMING, so a possession challenge that gives you a high and leaves you without side effects (for the most part) would have us all by our necks! And just like drug experimentation, there are people who would be more vulnerable to peer pressure and others who would take it too far. The part that really pissed me off was when Hayley and that other guy tried to distance themselves as much as possible when s*** got real with Riley when they were the ones who indroduced the hand to them in the first place.
That's where the brothers got the idea for the movie - They saw someone at a party convulsing on drugs and, instead of helping, people just stood around recording it for social media.
The dad dying means so many things, he didn’t get stuck in limbo and become one with the hand like Mia did. And the elevator either means he survived or escaped limbo and went to “heaven”. Love this movie
the opening scene with the kangaroo was to show that Mia wasn't gonna be able to stab Riley, even if she thought it was for his own good. even throwing him into traffic wasn't in her.
my theory is that hayley and josh were possessed after all the times they used the hand. cuz why were they so excited? esp knowing what happened with ducket. also i lowkey felt bad for mia. she messed, like a lot! but she's a such a complex character. if the hand is a metaphor for addiction, then she's someone who used once as an escape and then just couldn't stop no matter who else got hurt.
The concept of the hand is getting high from it, idk if you ever got high but it feels good and it's addicting. It's why anyone would act that way if they took the hand.
So I think the mom spirit was always always the drowned woman pretending to be the mom cause towards the end when she would appear she started looking more and more wet, which only makes sense for a spirit who drowned, like when she was trying to get the girl to push the kid off at the end the "mom" ghost was practically dripping wet so I guess the other ghosts true identity showing through
This movie is an allegory on drug use. We all see them doing this and think, “who tf would do this?!” But that’s also how we feel about people who do crack and heroin and shit. They know there are lots of dangers doing it but they still want the high
since jay said she was confused about the ending i thought i may write out some thoughts of how i personally interpreted it *_SPOILERS AHEAD_* . . . . to me the ending is basically showing mia in limbo after death (where all the other spirits are that they communicated with while using the hand, she's stuck like that cause she died while still being possessed) she is confused and thinks she's still alive. she sees riley recover and move on, then you see her dad walking to the elevator and i thought this meant he survived but i think it may actually be showing him going into heaven cause the elevator is going up instead of down to be released out of the hospital (symbolizing his ascension into heaven) the bloody kangaroo she sees i think is a callback to the very beginning of the movie, which gave heavy foreshadowing. she was unable to let go/move forward and instead selfishly chose to let the kangaroo suffer (even though i know it's a hard thing to do) to spare herself the sadness of knowing she killed the animal. and now that still rings true because she couldn't face or let go of her trauma all throughout the movie, which led to all her dumb decisions, so now she can't put HERSELF out of her misery due to now being stuck in limbo from all the grief she was suffocated by. then she becomes drawn to the light of the candle and sees the hand. this is in the POV of the other end of the hand of where the spirits are where we were previously seeing the living people's POV. i'm guessing the hand got sold or given away after this incident and is in a different country now. there are some theories that it was the other missing hand they mentioned but in the scene it still shows the left, not the right. so i don't think that's true lol. anyway, she is now seeing herself on the other end of what she was doing before. now she's the one letting people in and is stuck like that. the ending could easily be a lead in for a sequel or prequel, who knows. but also gave enough closure where if we don't get one then it wouldn't be upsetting. the directors (who are youtubers btw and this is their first ever theatrical debut, big shout out rackaracka) did an interview and said there was a long sequence of the ending just being her in hellscape and stuck in hell but that it became too graphic and they didn't wanna take away from the message of the movie by adding unnecessary gore solely for shock value and being distasteful, which i appreciate. to me the movie is a huge metaphor for vices (drugs, alcohol, etc) addiction of any kind you use to numb the pain and also trauma/guilt/grief which typically ties in with vices. there are so many metaphors, so much symbolism. like you said it's a movie that takes a couple of watches to fully catch all of them and even then you could probably still miss some ! also i think it's ironic that the whole theme was centered around an embalmed hand and the overall underlying message is about being able to 'let go', if you rewatch you can notice so much focus on things about hands (daniel and mia comparing hand sizes, mia dreaming of them holding hands, mia picking at her fingernail polish all the time, jade stopping riley from ending himself with her hand getting smashed, riley biting her hand, etc) just a fun thing i noticed. love this movie, probably one of my favorite horror movies that have come out since hereditary and the x/pearl franchise. the acting was *chefs kiss* i can't recommend it enough !
Once again the nails are eating!! This movie was so good! Sophie did such a great job and im glad they believed in her. So excited to see where they go with the second film! I also really loved how Jade never gave into that temptation.
That ending was so freaking good omg whaaaat I need to see the origin of the hand or hands I should say so glad they already got the green light for the sequel
Another super cool thing about A24 is, to my understanding, they are SAG-AFTRA compliant. I saw a theory that her mother was actually the drowned ghost that Mia first let in and that stayed in her for longer than 90 seconds. So that is why the ghost (or spirit whatever) got increasingly wet/bloated etc every appearance. I did actually catch the whole water deal with her 'mother' so I really do think that narrative makes sense. Anyway this movie is so fucking interesting and I'm excited to purchase it and watch it again. I'm excited that my favorite youtube persons are starting to react to it, this is my first one to watch 💜
Might be one of my favorite movies that’s a metaphor for addiction, also the dog is cgi and a puppet, the only real scenes of it in #that scene is when it walks up and licks his cheek and when it’s walking away from him
The ending has me confused still. im not sure if she realized she got manipulated and sacrificed herself or if Jade pushed her to save Riley. Still not sure about pops either. The elevator showed him going up so that could have symbolized him going up to heaven while she stays in limbo. And she was alone in limbo so it raises the question of does every spirit keep their sanity and eventually loses their sanity from being in forever darkness alone?
I think that last part is a combination. To me I thought of limbo being the place where a lot of spirits who died while clinging to the world of living ended up. I think that's why Riley was able to connect to her mom. Then the multiple time skips when Mia is the one in limbo could show that spirits do end up losing their sanity or they become corrupted.
At the end, right when Mia is about to push Riley, her “mom” shows up right behind her and starts egging Mia on so that she goes through with killing Riley. However, there are a couple things that the “mom” says that didn’t add up. She calls Mia, “Mia”. Every other time during the film she called Mia, “Mi”. And she then says that she would look after Riley forever. Earlier on in the film, it was said to Mia that whoever dies while there are spirits inside of them will be stuck with those spirits forever. Mia realizes that her “mom” is not really her mom, that the spirits want her to kill Riley so he’ll be stuck with them forever, and that she was clearly being manipulated in many different ways, etc. So she jumps instead
@@breezy0390but when the camera moves to inside those people’s car, you can see Jade running up on Mia right before she lands on the windshield. So I think the filmmakers wanted to leave it vague, because they knew some of the audience was gonna like Mia and hate Jade, as well as the other way around. So I think they purposefully made it so that it could be both, depending on how the viewer feels about the characters.
Jade was probably "running up on Mia" to grab ahold of the wheelchair so Riley wouldn't roll down the hill. She wouldn't be able to both shove Mia and grab hold of Riley's wheelchair in that short amount of time

Anybody see the movie Mirrors from 2008? That movie and this movie have almost the exact same ending. I’m not calling rip off cause no one cared about Mirrors and I doubt the filmmakers of Talk To Me saw it, but it’s interesting. But yeah “main character become spirit” is kind of a cliche on its own.
When the relative asked her if she was thinking about working with her dad & you said "we might die before that happens" LMFAOO right on the money unfortunately 😩🤣🤣😭
The mom was never there, from what I understand is that Riley was possesed by the one who was behind him when Mia was first possesed. I'm curious about what happens when you get possessed again while the first spirit is still there though

That movie and this movie have almost the exact same ending. I’m not calling rip off cause no one cared about Mirrors and I doubt the filmmakers of Talk To Me saw it, but it’s interesting.
But yeah “main character become spirit” is kind of a cliche on its own.
"baby if you wanna do something do CRACK" oh wow
When the relative asked her if she was thinking about working with her dad & you said "we might die before that happens" LMFAOO right on the money unfortunately 😩🤣🤣😭
Now imma go watch this movie lol I love your vids once I start this new job you'll have a new member keep it coming and wishing you the best
Yess been waiting for this video!
The mom was never there, from what I understand is that Riley was possesed by the one who was behind him when Mia was first possesed. I'm curious about what happens when you get possessed again while the first spirit is still there though
Ain't no way is right! I could NEVER
Glad you reacted to this movie, This was literally Oija board on Steroids!
This movie was so good
7:41 I didn't notice till recently but the fingers twitch when the possession occurs
