      Hey Scotty, I always thought this was the sort of car you said one should avoid...like the plague. A 12-year-old BMW with a V-12 sells for around $11 - $15k. WOW, that's cheap for all that gimmicky luxury and plenty of carefree V-12 motoring ahead. If you're only making minimum wage, you would have to be insane not to drive a German V-12!

    His car review made me realise we really don't have anything revolutionary in today's cars. It's pretty much 10-20 year old technology that's revised and "polished" to make it glamorous for each new generation.

      Except that all the safety technology ten years ago was available in high priced luxury cars. Now you can get lane assist, pedestrian detection, blind spot detection for much cheaper these days. That's how tech works, its available early on in high priced products then gets cheaper.

Sold it off as is to my neighbor who worked at a dealer. He uses it but said I made the right choice. The engine has plastic parts and the electrical system was a mess. It is a cool car but unless it has been maintained to perfection, don’t ever buy one. It is a true money pit

      Luxury cars are often the first to get innovative features. All the way down to safety that is on every car nowadays. Cadillac has what is called Super Cruise on the top tier model which uses cameras and lidar, as well as maps and GPS to allow the car to completely drive itself on freeways. There are talks of this feature eventually coming to other GM models.

      Go buy one and watch how many of those features don't work anymore. I looked at a few. Some had busted stereo speakers, refrigerator didn't work, lights on dash on, and check engine. They headlights aren't that great compared to current standards and are a pain to upgrade. If you can get the scanner to read "no codes" then it might be ok, but any problems after will be expensive. It doesn't really turn heads anymore and no one gives a damn about a v12 engine nowadays!

    • @viimelaanpere4738
      @viimelaanpere4738 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Exactly. The car itself is top notch, it was above 100 000$ when it was new and it still has options that many cars don´t have today and it that aspect BMW 7-series, Audi A8 and Merc with their S-class are the ones who come up with new features (Audi A8 with LED-matrix head lights for example).
      Running a low mileage 7-series, well kept car would take at least 10-15k a year as a second car, considering you have competent service station. If a 7-series BMW was previously owned by some careless owner, it would take a lot more. There are things that fail with E65/66 BMW, including the audio system (in most cases it´s the amplifier), also steering rack because of the enormous weight of the car. The Infotainment system of this BMW was also something new for a 2002 model year, a in 2003 it was introduced in a E60 5-series. It was a new thing back then and it doesn´t seem special now, but kind of shows that BMW set the trend with their system.

      drjd2real - The chauffeur would appreciate the V12 engine. Especially when he’s not paying to fill it up with gas.
      People who can afford cars like the 7 series brand new usually don’t drive them. So it’s kind of redundant IMO to jam all of those driving aid features to be enjoyed only by the chauffeur.

      Electric devices usually last a long time there is'nt anything that can go wrong with them really. Only things like central locking and the alarm can become a pain as i've experienced with my 18+ year Seat toledo. Given it is not a luxury car, but just saying, all the lights and vents work perfectly fine after all those years.

    • @alekwhite8402
      @alekwhite8402 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Fixing the car would be a different story. You have to get one of those 5 grand scan tools if you want to fix it yourself because the dealership no matter how much money you pay won't clear any codes unless they deem it is fixed right, in order for that to happen they have to redo everything themselves. (My friend owned a BMW).

      Do you own a 7 series of any generation? As long as you do all the scheduled maintenance and preventative maintenance BMW’s are phenomenal cars. I have a 2015 750Li XDrive Msport. I have never had the slightest issue and I am the original owner. The problem is that people who can’t afford the car or maintenance requirements get into these vehicles trying to basically impress people with a car they have no business owning. If someone wants a car they don’t have to do scheduled maintenance on I suggest they drive a Camry.

    I have to admit for a BMW that's twelve years old with all these special features and quirks I'm impressed they all work. It's pretty obvious that the previous owner maintained the vehicle very well. Yes, of course there will be some issues with it later on but you have to admit that for a car this old with all the electronic gadgets and so forth it's not a bad deal.
    I personally like the vehicle. Great job Eric!

      I see these comments everywhere, but I don't know where the rumour started. I have an E39 from -02 as an everyday drive. It's got almost 300 000km on the meter and most things still works and feels solid. Had it on inspection yesterday and got two remarks: headlights too foggy and parking brake not strong enough. This is the second time I own one of these, and to be honest I've had zero failures on the electrical gizmos. What really breaks these cars is the brittle plastics used for pipes and hoses in the engine compartment. Other than that, normal maintenance will keep you rolling for years. Great quality cars!

    I should enter this with a video about my Hilux. AC: nope. Heated seat: nope. Adjustable seat: nope. Power steering: nope. Back seat: nope. Auto locking hubs: nope. ABS: nope. Smooth and silent ride: nope. Rugged 4 cylinder non-turbo diesel engine with a 5 speed manual box with a manual transfer case and manual hub locks: Yes. Luxury feature: Fluffy zebra colored seat cover from the 80's.
    Its not all that different from the mercedes. The biggest difference is that my hilux isnt an endless money pit.

    Most people would say yada yada yada.. not a good buy, expensive, breaks down, electronics, wouldn't last, not a good investment, Trent issues. But people buying these luxury cars think otherwise.. life don't last, body breaks down too, and time definitely is expensive.. so why not make everything comfy down to every second in the journey. Seems a good buy for those who truly deserve it.

      i owned a 745li, it was the worst car i ever owned, repeatedly broke down and repairs cost a fortune as well as parts, not to mention that you can't move it at all unless it's on (can't put in neutral while off) it came down to the point that it was burning oil and shooting out smoke on one of the mufflers due to me being unable to fix it yet having to rely on it, such a fix required to pull out the engine and that was costing 4k! not even at the dealership either but at a bmw certified mechanic shop, im just glad its off my hands now, sold it as it was for 1.5k, because really, that car was just a bunch of high-priced junk.

      rc121crx I agree. But it's probably because of the type of this channel..As far as i can tell from the couple of videos i watched, this channel is not about the usual new (expensive) cars you would normally see on most car reviewing channels, but rather about old (and most of the times ugly :p) but therefore cheap, reliable, and easy to fix cars that just get the job done for a small budget. So people here say they would rather drive a corolla than a 7 series or some Mercedes. They feel like this car is a money waste and therefore hate on it.
