The n/a V8 AMG hung in there with the twin turbo V12. I wonder how bad the BMW would be beat by the 6.5 V12 Bi Turbo Benz?.?. That would be a fair match up.

760 is a v12, S63 is a v8. They should compare the 760 with the S65 so it would be a v12 vs v12.

The s65 is a more luxurious but slower vehicle that is more expensive. In that generation especially.
I think that "whacky behavior" that comes out of the S63 is exactly why people buy AMGs in the first place. They aren't like Porsches, which are made around Motorsport. They are luxury vehicles that exhibit a crazy personality because they have powerful engines, tight suspensions, and...comfort.
James is quietly the funniest on the show.

Yes it is actually. From the last C&D test of each they recorded a 4.1 0-60 and 12.4 1/4 mile from the S63 and a 4.2 and 12.4 from the S65. It is much heavier and geared differently.
Neither are particularly fast anyhow.

, plus when you sit close to a screen the greater pixel density adds to the clarity of the video.
I honestly don't know if the German's ability to make a turbocharged V12 seem almost unnoticeable is a good or bad thing, but it's certainly amazing.

Right. The S600 (510hp V12) Merc competes with the 760Li (535hp V12) or the Alpina B7 (540hp V8) competes with the S63 (536hp V8).
The main intentional benefit of the V12's are the smoothness and linearity in power deliver. Something no V8 can match.

Already said above that the test is presented more as a 'most powerful model' head-to-head test more than a pricing head-to-head test, so that means the S65 - also already said in another comment that if BMW won't produce an M7, then that's their problem when the S65 is compared to the 760Li.
540hp from a 6 liter twin turbo v12 is nothing short of pathetic
It's even more pitiful when you hear the price
It is not about how much power u can get out from the engine
It is about how comfortable and effortless the power delivery is

Oh come on..perhaps 540hp is a bit less for the displacement, but then again these cars are really made for their huge power band and torque..or more realistically made to look pretty in your garage. There's no doubt these cars will haul ass though. These just aren't made for speed or tracking, it just so happens that they have murcielago/mp4-12c level of hp/torque and that's a pretty sweet bonus. But anywhere else, power delivery wise, its got your back.
That's what I thought it should be making about 850 it's to expensive to only do 188 that BMW is trash

I never said they have the same top speed. I said they all have similar top speeds. 190mph+ for any of these cars is crazy fast and completely unutilized bragging rights, nothing more.

However the benefits of a V12 aren't just for power and performance but the WAY they power/perform. They are crazy smooth and linear in their power delivery and pull like a champ. It's a different feeling/experience than a V8 can provide.
And now V12's are in the 700hp range so there is still a use for them as being more powerful (and smoother/more linear) than V8's...
S65 is better than this bmw !

It has been like this for a while. BMW and Audi dominate Merc in most areas but Merc still sells well (in the US at least) because of the brand perception and image they still have based on their PAST products.
That is what these V12's do these days. They aren't necessarily tuned for high output but for refinement and smooth power delivery.

WAIT WHAT? @5:00 they said the S63 does NOT hav rear TVs, well i dont know if its an extra option my dad had a 2008 S63 AMG that had TVs in the rear and interior lighting that can change colors and i found that very nice for that time :D
Fair point on the pricing but they introduced the BMW at the very start of the video as the "most powerful" BMW - they didn't focus on the price. Some tests based on price (especially second hand versus new, for the same money), can be very interesting but I think the test here is mainly a Merc vs BMW head to head: that means the equivalent S-Class must be the S65 AMG. Especially as the S65 is a V12 biturbo (like the BMW) and the S63 is only a V8, normally aspirated engine.

A few reasons. Most noticeably is the BMW uses a 6.0L while the Lambo has a 6.5L. Another is the fact that the BMW V12 revs to 5500rpm while the Lambo revs to over 8000rpm. It doesn't peak that 691hp till 8,250rpm while the BMW 760Li peaks its 535hp at 5,250rpm.
They are both designed intentionally this way to produce the power they do for a reason.
Finally! PROPER Top Gear.
Not when Merc offers an S600 to compete with the 760Li and BMW offers the Alpina B7 to compete with the S63.
This comparison was a bit jacked up as the two cars don't directly compete but each manufacture offers something that does.

The S63 has been available with a more powerful biturbo 5.5 V8 for some time plus in most countries you can order a 760i SWB version.
And similar power out. 760Li at 535hp and S63 at 536hp. However the S600 would have been the most appropriate comparison car for the 760Li as that is it's intended competitor, of course.

American Top Gear will never ever be as great as UK Top Gear...
That and the V12 S classes are still stuck with a 5 speed autobox, while the S63 at least has the 7 speed gearbox. The V12 BMW has an 8 speed from ZF!

It's all about how the engine is constructed. Same with the formula 1 cars they got a V8 with a displacement of 2.4 litres and these engines still delivers more HP then the V6 from Nissan GTR. The secret is in how much can the engine rev and how its constructed.

a BMW with a WBA vin code should not be compared to a BMW with a WBS vin code..
Therefor a non-M should not be compared to a AMG.... it's just amazing that a non-M should beat a AMG, wether it's the S63 or S65...
Two different variants in fact. The S600, which competes with this 760, and the S65, which competes higher up.

Still an indy tuner, so the comparison to AMG still doesn't fly. Market segmentation is getting closer to where I'm coming from but in that context i still say top of the range 7-Series versus top of the range S-Class means 760Li versus S65AMG, like it or not. The only way to avoid that comparison is for BMW to produce an M7 based on the 760Li.
