    Sometimes you just need a big SUV. If you need to carry 6 or 7 of your closest friends, you can get away with a large crossover or a minivan but if you need something that seats 9, your options are limited to GM's full-size SUVs or a selection of passenger vans that time forgot. This is where the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV come in. GM's full-size SUV family spans from big to ginormous with a price tag the spans $48,950 on into six digits. If you for some reason thought the era of the big truck-based SUV was over, GM hopes to prove you wrong with their redesigned 2015 models. Thanks to the latest technology from the GMC Sierra and Silverado, the 2015 behemoths are surprisingly agile, powerful and even economical for its size.
    GM's new sheetmetal is their boldest and most attractive yet. Inside we get all new interiors that finally seem like they belong in SUVs that start at $50,000. There are of course the latest Ecotec3 engines under the hood and GM's heavy duty 6-speed automatic. I'm told that the all-new GM 8-speed auto will debut in the 2015 models with the 6.2L V8 shortly. Thanks to the beefy engines and stout transmissions towing over 4 tons is small work.
    If you need the four wheel drive capability and towing ratings of a pickup truck but the passenger carrying ability of a minivan, look no further than the new 2015 GM full-sized SUVs. Just be prepared for some sticker shock.

    This was the sweet spot of full sized GM SUV's. Both modern and old school. I love it and wish this design could have lasted a couple more model years like the prior generation!

    I have watched all the 2015 GMC Yukon Denali reviews on you tube, yours is by far the best in depth review. Your review on this vehicle has been my deciding factor to buy one, thanks, I'm a fan now. I am going to purchase the XL version Denali.

    Your reviews are great. Very tastefully done and easy to watch. However I'd like to see some driving impressions. 0-60 acceleration, 60-0 braking, offroad capability, cornering ability, figure 8, 1/4 mile times, highway noise, driver involvement, whether or not its fun to drive/rewarding to drive, does it provide feedback? Observed fuel economy etc. you seem well informed and more than capable of performing these tests (not the case with many other auto journalists you find on youtube for the record) and I'd like to hear your take on those areas of the vehicles. Thanks for the videos. Keep em comin!

    Bryan,
    The Enclave and Acadia will eventually get GM's FWD transaxle being co-developed with Ford. It it likely going to be a 9 or 10 speed unit but dates are much farther in the future.

    • @bryansatterlee6770
      @bryansatterlee6770 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info Alex. I've been going back and forth on a few possibilities. The new Durango, or the new Enclave....I wonder if the new 9 or 10 speed transaxle would be worth the wait in regards to gas mileage savings. I'm currently driving an '08 Chrysler Aspen with the Hemi...anything would be a savings as the MDS system is not functioning at the moment! I was considering the Enclave a little more for the smoother ride and luxury feel. The Durango is nice, but I feel like it is still pretty close to the Apen I have been driving for 6 years. What kind of mileage did you during your road test review for the Enclave? In your opinion, do you think the new transaxle would be worth waiting for?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryan Satterlee
      In general the Enclave scored fairly low due to its heavy curb weight, below 18 as I recall. The Durango RWD with the V6 would be one of the more economical choices in this segment aside from the hybrid Highlander especially if you are primarily a highway driver. The 8-speed auto really helps things out in the Grand Cherokee and Durango. The smaller Nissan Rogue and Kia Sorento will get better mileage, but they won't handle as much cargo.

    I find the Cadillac to be a bit overdone and actually prefer the look of the GMC version. Not having to deal with Cadillac's Cue system would be another plus.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cannot escape CUE. IntelliLink in the GMC and Chevy is exactly the same software with different colors and a resistive touchscreen (CUE uses a capacitive).

    • @1guyin10
      @1guyin10 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but at least in the GMC you get a few buttons so it is a bit less contemptible.

      1guyin10
      I do like the additional buttons, but I actually like CUE. It has improved since it was launched and although it can be sluggish it is attractive and well featured. In general sluggish systems don't bother me as much as they bother some. I'll take the expanded feature set and a sluggish interface over a snappy interface without the features.

    Yes I'd like to see two-part reviews in future, would give you more flexibility to add detail and hopefully it'd make your editing easier too.

  • @acchaladka
    @acchaladka 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting. Would like more on why the change from 4WD to 2WD does not affect mileage much. I guess because the weight is a small % change and inertia effect, but that seems simple.

    I'd personally give the 3rd row seats in the short wheelbase version a 6 or 7 out of 10 because I find them way too close to the floor and that does affect comfort but if I get the 7 passenger configuration, my legs can stretch out in the middle seat so 7 out of 10 for the 7 passenger configuration and 6 out of 10 for the 8 passenger, and regardless of the configuration, I'd rather have the 3rd row, than not.

    Glad Alex showed that a Fiat (1:14)would fit under the xL model…. because…. any car in 2015 that fits with the "fiat fits underneath axle to axle" option makes it extremely rare and desirable with sometimes giving a resell value at usually around 85-90%! Soooooo important. All the other reporting is worthless…..

    Great review Alex...you mentioned the 8 speed transmission that will be available later this year for these full size SUV that will increase fuel economy. Do know if GM will also change the transmissions from 6 to 8 speeds in the smaller SUV/crossovers? Specifically the Buick Enclave or GMC Acadia.

    Personally, I give the third row of the Tahoe/SWB Yukon/SWB Escalade either a 6 or 7 out of 10 points due to the seating position which means I would have to cross my legs in order to use the third row so therefore I really consider the third row of the SWB Yukon/Tahoe as an emergency third row. But as for the Yukon XL/Suburban/Escalade ESV, I give it's third row 10 out of 10 for its large and accommodating third row. Actually, its third row is one of the reasons why the Yukon XL Denali is my top pick of any SUV. Period.

    Great review. I especially liked how you pointed out the differences with the other large GM crossovers. Have you reviewed the GMC Terrain and other midsize GM crossovers? You've probably driven it's twin, the Chevy Traverse on your journalist adventures. Correct me if I'm wrong, I guess Buick doesn't have a midsize crossover. Thanks.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have a video on the Traverse/Terrain but I do like them. They are practical, good value, and you can get the 300HP V6 in them which is quite unique in the segment. I'm not clear why Buick doesn't have a version, they jump right from the Encore to the Enclave.

    Nice review. The Escalade version is certainly a looker but the Chevy version is, IMO, hideous.
    Curious: Assuming you usually work alone (always fixed cameras), how'd you get the running boards to open and retract on demand?

    Alex, great reviews. Better than Consumer reports and Kelly. I have the 2013 Yukon Denali fully loaded Hybrid version. Love driving it. I only have two issues; 1. 3rd row is not good if over 5ft tall. 2. Major issue is that the iPhone OS is not supported properly so hands free does not work for calls and music. Escalated to GMC to no avail, this of course is a safety issue. Have you heard anything on this issue? I am considering a new SUV and the interop issue makes me not want a GMC again as I can't accept incoming calls while driving without using the phone which is illegal and not safe (am in California) Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander are appealing to me. have seen your excellent highlander review, which search for a honda pilot review if you have it. I have the Highlander 2003 for 10 years loved it, no issues but wanted something bigger.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Evans I don't think there will be many fixes for that issue but the new Yukon does not seem to have that same problem.

    That 3rd row looks really uncomfortable, I disagree with your 10/10 for the XL thought, and that is because the Ford/Lincoln full size SUBs have the flat 3rd row.

      ***** It has been lightened and the torque vectoring system has been improved but it is still the same basic system. The rear can be "over driven" vs the front and it can send 100% of the power to a single rear wheel.

    Alex, Isn't the 5.3 slated to get the upcoming 10 speed transmission that Ford and GM are developing together?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      "maybe" and "at some point". The 9 and 10 speed transmissions will be out at some point but everyone sems to be guessing as to when. The 8-speed from GM is "flesh and blood" so that will be the first upgrade for the 5.3 soon.

    Love your reviews. One question though, you mention that in the long wheelbase version you get 15 inches more legroom. Are you sure it's that much more? Sat it one and didn't seem much longer than the short wheelbase (still only for children)

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CMUBruin I think I did mis-speak there, you get about a foot more leg room, mostly in the 3rd row but a hair additional in the second row as well.

    did you notice the sound pressure (low frequency) the noise reduction creates? it's a deal breaker for me. Also disappointed in the seats, small and not nearly as nice/comfy as wife's x3 or the new x5 sport seat or multicontour. going to pass
