    In the books, they described the creator of Epstein Drive and his ship still hurtling into space as "The best, longest funeral in the history of mankind."

  • @Netherspark0_0
    @Netherspark0_0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +267

    That "ship" that got destroyed was actually a giant mirror used to reflect light down to Ganymede's farms. Ganymede is a joint Mars-Earth station that provides food to the belt.

    • @ShasOFish
      @ShasOFish 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      And to add further emphasis, Ganymede is responsibly for a fairly high two-digit percentage of the food in the Belt. That one mirror (let alone the others) means potentially thousands or tens of thousands of people eventually starving unless something changes.

    The sequence with Epstein ended with him saying "technology changes everything." Then the episode ends with a protomolecule-looking creature attacking Bobby and her team. And the episode is named "Paradigm Shift."
    This series literally gets better and bigger with every episode.
    Julie was the "seed crystal" for the stuff on Eros.
    This episode is the beginning of the second book.
    Chrisjen is scary. She's awesome and I love her, but she is scary.

    21:54 Ganymede is the seventh moon of Jupiter and the largest moon in the solar system (it's larger than _the planet Mercury,_ though only 45% as massive), and the only moon known to have a magnetic field, which, together with its size and mass, led _both_ the UN (Earth) and Mars to use it as a breadbasket (agricultural colony) for the outer solar system and the belt (hence the now shattered orbital mirrors... there's not a lot of sunlight, out there); the incident in this episode happened at the border between UN and Martian territories, which Bobbie and her squad were patrolling).
    The gravity and magnetosphere also make it a preferred spot for those Belters who can afford it to give birth, since they heavily reduce the chance of birth defects, stillbirths, and other microgravity or radiation induced complications.

    Last episode was the end of book 1. This was, technically, the start of book 2. Which is why last week felt like a finale and this one a new beginning. And hang on to your butts, because it only 'escalates quickly' from here.

      Yep, there's lots of hints for what's going on in this and past episodes as always, but the beauty of those hints is in only realising their significance in retrospect once the show tells you more. And you realise how beautifully set up the whole show is. If you work it out in advance hats off that's great, but I prefer being baffled and then amazed at the reveal.

    Ganymede (Jupiter moon) is one of the two "Bread Baskets" of the Solar Systems run by Belters mostly. Earth and Mars have stations there protecting their interests. We heard last episode that Bobby and her unit was going to be on "Farm duty" there and very unhappy about it. We saw the Sun-reflecting mirrors (for the crops) shattered in orbit and land on Bobby's battle field as whatever it was happened and a Drone flew over head.
    Boddy's unit and their UNN counter parts ("shadows" they called them) was who they fought with. We don't know much about it than that at this point. It appears they charged MCRN lines, which is an act of war, under normal circumstances.
    We are unsure what happened in space that started the firing as Bobby's team was jammed and could not report being charged.

    So I get your confusion. This will not be a spoiler, but the last episode with Miller and Julie represents the end of the first novel. So they actually went half-way into season two to finish it. That's why you were picking up on the transition. This episode represents the beginning of the second book. Glad your liking it. It's amazing x10.

  • @thedragondemands
    @thedragondemands 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    The creators insisted on adapting the WHOLE story of the Expanse books, not drastically condensing "book one" to fit into "Season 1" etc. Thus the END of Book One happens in Episode 5 of Season 2. So what we're seeing now is the mystery that puts book 2 into motion: just as book one is about the "Eros Incident", book 2 is about "the Ganymede Incident".

    Always love your reactions! Since you asked for some context, Bobbie's squad was on Ganymede, one of Jupiter's moons. A couple episodes ago, Bobbie complained about being assigned to "farm patrol", because Ganymede is where most of the food eaten in the Belt is grown. Both Earth and Mars have troops on Ganymede because they both want the Belters to stay alive and mining, since asteroid belt resources keep the economies of Earth and Mars afloat. That big shiny thing you saw just get shattered was an enormous orbital mirror, which was in orbit to give extra sunlight to the greenhouses on Ganymede, since Jupiter is much further from the Sun than Earth is.

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More like sole control of Ganymede by either inner world would be completely unacceptable to the other, because that food supply is power. I doubt they give a fuck about the Belters not eating well.

    Honestly this is the first episode where this entire series plot started to reveal itself to me. I have to thank you both. Your journey watching this show inspired me to give it another go because I had quit previously in season 1. Naomi loyalty is to the Belt despite the fact she signed onto the Cantebury and ultimately ended up on the Rocinante. Keep that in mind with her decision to not destroy the protomolecule. Mao's influence is ever reaching because of his massive wealth. Therefore, Chrisjen's choice to suffocate it is the best course of action in defense especially while she is trying to determine the ultimate goal in his instigating of war between Earth and Mars. The war for Mao is a smoke screen while he finds a way to monopolize and perfect the protomolecule. History is repeating itself with the attack on the Mars military as it did with Pheobe Station and Eros. Keep going and watch that rabbit hole get deeper and deeper. Great reaction! Enjoy!

    The answers you are looking for are forthcoming, you arent supposed to know yet. I will give you one answer that has been mentioned previously... Gunny's Mars Marine squad got assigned a couple episodes back to guard the agricultural domes on Ganymede, one of the moons of Jupiter, the biggest grower of food products for the whole system. A war there would be disastrous.....

    Edit: Epstein invented the Epstein drive which is used by all ships for interplanetary travel. Its one of the main technologies that separates the Expanse from the ones we generally know today, as it allows for _much_ faster and efficient travel at those distances.
    It doesn't really matter what the drives that Chrisjen was tracking were, just that she was looking for the source of the stealth ships.

    You are correct. You are not supposed to know yet. Also, this is the beginning of book 2, so technically the last episode was the finale of book 1. the writers decided to extend the books into the next season, so you never know when there will be an episode that feels like a finale. Good concept. All the questions you have will be answered in due time, but also at that point you will have more questions. One of the great things about this show. :)

    Earlier in the season, if you remember, Bobbie (Gunny) was pissed off that they were diverted to Ganymede to "babysit some farmers". Ganymede is the breadbasket of the belt where most of the food is grown.

    The battle in the end took place at Ganymed, what is one of the Moons of Jupiter. It is the biggest Moon of our Solar System. In the Show the UN and MCR share the Moon to do agriculture and food production there. That`s why there was a border to be patroled by both sides.
    And additional fact, in case you did not know: 2x5 is the final of book Nr. 1 and so 2x6 is the start of book Nr. 2.
    And to Steven ... in my opinion you`re totally right about the storytelling. One can have faith in the writers.

    Just reacted to this one on Tuesday! New crazy things going on! Are those alien creatures protomolecule creatures? We both wonder why Erynwright looks at Crisjen in that creepy way! Like Nikki I also thought that Epstein survived cause he was telling the story, but commentors said that he did stroke out and die and his ship is still going!

  • @LittleV179
    @LittleV179 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Don't worry you aren't supposed to know whats going on right now, all you need to know is that Ganymede (where Gunny was) is a joint food station, lots of farming families and food, that it's solar powered mirrors have just been destroyed and gunnys team were attacked, that is literally all you are supposed to know right now. The show sets up a LOT but it ALWAYS delivers answers so if you ever feel confused just be patient and you'll be told in no time whats happening.

    It's supposed to be a little confusing because the show acts like a mystery detective story. They first present you with the mystery, then (episode by episode) they present you with the clues that connects to what's going on deeper in the story which eventually leads the audience to the big reveal. It's the unknown that frightens us and keeps us on the edge of our seat and it's our curiosity to know what's going on keeps us coming back for more. But trust me all your questions will be answered, so fasten your seat belts because here comes the juice.

  • @j.e.purrazzi484
    @j.e.purrazzi484 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The good stuff is just starting!!! This one confused me too but it does all get explained very well. I think the big things you need to know right now is a) Julie was a host mind for the proto molecule on Eros, but it was not first contact. So think of that as a "strain" of the protomolocule. B) Gunny and the Martians were on Ganymede. A moon on Jupiter where there is a farming colony that supplies both Mars and the belt. The UN and the Martians share a very tense presence there. So what happened looked like an act of war. Also, I hope this isn't too close to a spoiler, but Holden and the others are mainly concerned with the protomolocule's use as a weapon. So that ties the politics back in.

    If you're an STEM focused person, this series is especially loaded with "science easter eggs," that make you really appreciate the research behind the series compared to other sci-fii franchises/shows. A lot less hand-waving magic science that really adds to the appreciation of the writing/production.

    • @SnaFubar_24
      @SnaFubar_24 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely agree! When it comes to the scientific content in the show they get as much "right" as can be done and still allow room for drama and all the other awesome qualities that make a series special.

    This episode would be called "Paradigm shifts (plural)"
    -The Solomon Epstein's groundbreaking invention (which costed his life) Thankfully, his wife found the blueprints and gave them to Mars who bargain the tech whith Earth to gain their independance and launch the solar system gold rush
    -The whole aftermath of the "Eros situation" (political relations, sceduled scientific mission on Venus, Miller savior image...)
    -The new power balance with the OPA getting the "lost" missiles
    -Mao being uncover and on the run, getting Erinwright in a really dangerous position
    -The final event on Ganymede wiping a significant part of martian and UN forces out in the area and revealing that "something else" is there

    All will be explained. Trust in the writers; they haven't led you wrong yet. Just like the opening to Season 1, Episode 1 with Julie Mao in the Anubis and the blue glowing mass around the fusion core, it was confusing at the start, but eventually all was explained. Steven's on the right track-- you are supposed to think, "WTF." Then you will piece it together as our characters piece it together. I think you will love this ride.

    No, Earth and Mars were not looking for a fight on Ganymede. But tensions were running high after Eros, and then sh*t went down.
    Think of it as the Cuban blockade. Two superpowers navies staring each other down and everyone keeping a finger on the button. It doesn't take much in a situation like that.
