    when you are first learning, cross the shins on the triceps (instead of the knees).
    eventually, it will be knees in armpits, but that is much more advanced.
    the bone-on-bone thing can hurt at first, but you do get used to it eventually!

    Hi Shana. I am probably beginner to intermediate level and have struggled to maintain crow for more than a second or two. Yours was about the tenth tutorial i tried. apparently utube programming is very good and new videos kept posting on my recommended list. I got it after watching yours. Was able to hold position with very little effort. Its funny but this video is 8 years old and you have other recent posts commenting about same thing I am. I like your down to earth way of explaining things and as others have commented really liked the wily coyote metaphor. Anyway thanks for this video. i subscribed and ill be definitely watching a lot more of your videos. As many benefits as yoga has its still fun to try a new pose that you could never envision doing. I am too old to play basketball but still want to do something athletic. I imagine you have done a video on handstands. I'll let you know progress. Thanks again!

      hi bill! thanks for this thoughtful message. i am so glad to hear that this video helped you so much! 😀 and thanks for subscribing. i have videos on just about anything and, of course, many on handstand. 😉
      you can see my handstand instructional playlist at th-cam.com/video/4147EXFLabU/w-d-xo.html (the 47 for my 47th video is not instructional, though)
      and, i have a handstand drill-a-day playlist at th-cam.com/video/YBOKt0Izjs0/w-d-xo.html (31 one-minute handstand drills)
      if you really, really want to improve your practice, you may want to consider my vimeo channel of classes (instead of just poses)...all lengths, all levels, and all intensities: vimeo.com/ondemand/yogathletica
      meantime, enjoy my youtube and stay in touch! i always love to connect!

      when you say baby crow...are you talking about crow on your forearms? not sure what you are referring to...

    • @sewong6409
      @sewong6409 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi Shana, yes crow on the forearms. My head's about to crash to the floor and I can't get my feet off the floor. My torso is proportionately longer than my legs. Could this be the problem? I can do a forearm balance no issue but somehow not the baby crow....

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bodily proportions may be an issue, but it's more likely tight shoulders. have you seen my karandavasana video? th-cam.com/video/PxujQeUwX3c/w-d-xo.html

    Shana,i can make it too.i can be lift up easily after i watched this but not too long time. I may need more strong arms and core,don't i?
    One more reason,i used to be collap on the floor,this makebme a bit fear about crow pose.
    Anyway keep practicing will make me more confident.i just hope like this. Love you,thanks for sharing^^

    • @YOGAthletica

      hi Pawitra english...you can always practice with a big pillow under your face. ;)
      but if you compact your pose (bend the knees!) and always keep your collarbones open and gaze upwards, it will help you to fall on your feet instead of your face. :D

    • @YOGAthletica

      inner heels don't need to touch...but big toes should. :) point or yoga point are both great. :)

  • @JamesEis
    @JamesEis 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Shana, I've just subscribed. As johnboyer says, you make it look easy - but you also explain really well how to get there!
    I agree with nicolawilly12, though: shins on triceps really hurts! It isn't 'bone on bone', it's bone on muscle, and it hurts my triceps. Any advice?

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hi james...yes, bone on muscle (that was a typo on my part) does hurt when you're not used to it. but you get used to it. i know that's not the advice you wanted to hear, but a little bruising and discomfort in the beginning is normal. your body DOES get used to it--and pretty quickly--so it doesn't hurt anymore. it's like playing volleyball. the first few times it kills your arms...and then, magically, it doesn't. :)
      also, when you get to the advanced knee-in-armpit part, the pressure won't hurt at all.
      thanks for the note!

    I finally did it! This is the first time I've ever felt balanced, and had my feet off the ground, in crow pose, even if it's just a few seconds. I showed my fiancé and he said it was amazing :) I do have a question though. Is it normal for your wrists to hurt? Or am I doing something wrong?

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +April M so awesome!
      we don't extend our wrists very often in real life, so when we do crow and other arm balances, we are not only extending wrists strongly, but also putting all or most of our weight on them.
      it is normal to feel discomfort if you are not used to using your hands/wrists this way.
      make sure your hands are even and not rolling to the pinky edge...so the weight distribution is nice and even.
      and oftentimes if you turn your hands slightly outwards it will also help to relieve the wrists. :)

      not sure what you mean.
      if your legs literally can't touch your arms, bring your hands closer to your feet.
      if you mean that it's hard to get your shins above your triceps/upper arms, then bring your hands further from your feet and bend your elbows more to get lower to establish your position. you can also come up on the balls of the feet to get higher on your arms. :)
