  • Inspired by Mike Waldt, I decided to turn Antique Salt & Pepper Mills. I use a different technique to show that there are options.
    I used Birch & Walnut with one and Birch & Bloodwood with the other. I did not use any finish on the inside.

    Hi Gord, Found you from the recommended list while looking at Gary's video. Fantastic looking pair of mills. I'm one of the others that posted a Pepper Mill by the way. The only concern I would have for using it for salt is that I sell mine and wouldn't want the buyer coming back to me in a couple of years time. Having said that I made a pepper grinder for my wife last Christmas from Laburnum and this year she might get a salt grinder from Ash. I have subbed and hit the bell. Cheers, Huw

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I was making them to sell I wouldn’t use a grinder for salt. Because they are for our use I am not worried about the salt. I can always replace the grinder mechanism if I need to. Thanks for watching, Huw. Merry Christmas to you and yours. 🎄🎄🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

    I think they look great Gord. The color of the wood and the shape really go great with the grinder itself. I think it is a perfect match. Especially the shape.
    This video was full of tips and I had enough room in my head today to store them.
    As always a well described and pleasant video to watch. If and when I make a set I will pull this video up again. I do love pepper so I can see one in the making.

    Gord,
    I've made well over a hundred of these mills and would definitely NOT use them for salt. I speak from experience. Salt will corrode the mechanism over time. Nice design and i like the little tray.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom,
      As I said to others I’m not worried about the salt grinder lasting forever. They are cheap enough that even if it only lasts a few years I’m okay with that. If it turns out that it corrodes quickly I will just replace the mechanism and have another pepper grinder to gift to someone. The turning is finished and that’s where the time is invested. Besides, I do this for fun and I definitely enjoyed making them!! 😃😃😃🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
      Glad you liked the design, Tom. Thanks for watching.

    Beautiful, as usual ....:) As it happens, the day before Mike Waldt's video came out, I had ordered a few of these for Christmas gifts. So I have watched Mike's video several times, waiting for a large piece of spalted maple to arrive tomorrow! Now YOU come along ... I am overwhelmed by expertise ... and I appreciate every minute of it. Now I don't know whether to go to Wales or Red Deer and beg for lessons .... :)
    Thank you SO much for all that you do.
    Oh - an afterthought: I have a few friends who are colour blind, so I will make my salt shaker about an inch taller than the pepper ... to avoid confusion for them.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ken, if I had thought of the colour blindness issue I would have made one with walnut the way I did and the other with walnut on the outside and birch or maple for the inside stripe. Wish I had thought of that!!

    Hi Gord Awesome tutorial, learned something from it even though I have been turning these for several years! I live not far from you NW of Edmonton and have always advised everyone to use these for pepper only and was told the other day from someone that they do cease up here in Alberta from using salt. I totally enjoy your tutorials and because I am far from any turning club, these tutorials are a great help! Thanks!

    • @GordonRock1

      Hi Al,
      Thank you very much. I’m happy that you like my attempts at video production. I have heard that salt is a potential problem but that it might not be too bad in our dry climate. The only way to know for sure is to try it. If the salt grinder lasts for a few years and has to be replaced I’m okay with that. They aren’t very expensive. If it doesn’t last very long I can replace it and have another pepper grinder to give away as a gift. The turning was the hard part and that’s finished. Either way I will think of it as a win. Thanks for watching, Al. 😃😃😃

    Nice project Gord. Have you considered using the lathe index to scribe the lines for the mounting holes?
    I made a drill guide like Mike Waldt's but, being a tool junkie, I picked up the Oneway Drill Wizard for projects that need multiple off center holes indexed.(it holds my drill and it can also hold my small router).

    Hey Gord, nice job. I'm actually in the middle of making a set myself. Just a thot...from my research, I found most are saying this grinder isn't the best idea for salt. It has the potential to corrode the gears. Might not be an issue here in AB cause of the low humidity. I'm just trying to make a matching salt shaker to go with the pepper grinder.

    • @GordonRock1
      @GordonRock1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve, Someone asked about the salt earlier. Humidity does make a difference and if the salt is dry I don’t think we would have much trouble here. Of course I was wrong once before. But I was only 10 at the time and have tried to avoid that happening again!! LOL
      Kidding aside, the grinders aren’t as expensive as I thought they would be so if I have to replace one someday that’s a lot quicker and easier than the turning!! Thanks for watching, Steve!

      No, Donny, my wife never did use them. She thinks they are more of a decorative/art piece than functional. So it’s hard to say whether it would still be holding up since it has not been subjected to any real use. Sorry I can’t be more help. Thanks for watching!

    Gord, beautiful. Something I'm going to try next year, sometime. Three questions: What wood did you use? I didn't quite catch that. And, did you put a finish on the inside of the mills? If so, what kind, considering it has to be food safe?
