  • (5 Sep 1997) The Queen stopped her car at the entrance to Buckingham Palace
    on Friday (5/9), to meet some of the thousands of people who had
    gathered outside to pay their respects to Diana, Princess of
    Wales.
    The Queen and Prince Philip went to look at the sea of flowers
    placed in front of the palace gates, before talking to members
    of the public mourning the death of Princess Diana.

    The Queen never knew how much the people loved the Princess and this is a surprised to her. The Princes were the primary concern as a family. Tony Blair was correct the monarchy needed to do something to acknowledge the people.

    • @brontewcat
      @brontewcat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Why?
      Why did the public not acknowledge the needs of the two children and back off?
      Actually I think the answer is the media. If the media had played it - leave the family alone for a week so the boys can grieve I suspect the public would have not been so upset with the RF. Unfortunately reasonable behaviour does not sell.

    • @donnageorge2761
      @donnageorge2761 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t remember if the boys were in the forefront of wanting to be seen I think it was the queen herself, people understood why the boys wouldn’t be there with the queen she had a good excuse, her grandsons probably was a little bit afraid to face the crowd her for how she treated Diana my guess is somebody was watching TV to let them know the overwhelming amount of flowers everywhere in London, I don’t remember if the people placed flowers at Balmoral

    While perhaps not greatly in touch with her people at the specific time, the queen and family’s first priority were those two young boys.
    Perhaps we shouldn’t judge her, as we don’t know how we’d react in the same tragic and unexpected event.
    Her Majesty has always been a beacon of poise, elegance, and graciousness.

    • @HM-xi5zi
      @HM-xi5zi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Very true. However, one does have to remember that she and the palace did not even release a statement or even lower the flag at half mast in the early days of Diana’s death. It took them quite a while to show any sign of sadness/mourning to the public. I think they were in shock at first naturally and didn’t really know how to handle something so unexpected, but a statement and lowering of the flags could’ve and should’ve been done while she was attending to her grandsons.

      Frankly I don’t think she warranted any criticism at the time. I was saddened by the lack of restraint shown by the British public in thinking their grief should be attended to before that of the two boys who had just lost their mother.
      The Queen did the right thing in staying in Balmoral with the Princes. The saddest thing was the public’s demand the RF return within a week of Diana’s death, instead of giving the two boys at least a week to mourn in private.
      Where I think the Queen made a mistake was not putting out a press release in asking for privacy for the two boys.

    • @brontewcat
      @brontewcat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@HM-xi5zi There was no flag at Buckingham Palace to be lowered. The only flag that is flown is the Royal Standard over the house when the monarch is present. It should not be lowered as the throne is never empty. The Queen is dead, long live the King.
      I think that tradition may be modified now, but it should only be the Union Flag that is flown at half mast.

    As popular as princess Diana was, The Queen has been, then since she was 26 and when she came to the throne, as The Queen of the dominion and empire - Oz, Canada, NZ etc and et al and is still head of the commonwealth. If Diana had become Queen consort, I'm not sure she'd have had the sustenance in her to see it through. She knew that and had already rescinded, as she confessed in her interview. I do like how The Queen was given some flowers and for her. Seems more moving some how.

      Grandparents take more care and also spoil their grandkids more than their own kids. How well I remember the day my husband and I learned Diana was dead. What a shock for me too and I was all the way in America but with all her stories in the newspapers, magazines and news scats, we knew what she was going through. She married a man that was very much in love with his lover. She married thinking he would love only her. British men seem to think it's their god given right to have a wife AND a mistress and they are wrong. Seeing the movie THE QUEEN, it shows a queen much removed from doing anything constructive with the boys, maybe just taking the TV and Radios away. That doesn't help the boys to deal with their grief. They needed to VOICE their feelings, not go stalking an animal to kill, just as their mother was stalked and killed. The movie got that right.

    Elizabeth II's death should remind us why monarchy is helpful. In the 19th & 20th centuries the U.S.A, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Spain and Greece suffered in various ways civil wars, political storms, and dictatorships. This shows what can go wrong in the absence of a head of state which is above politics, which opposes illegal dictatorship and helps keep the peace. If there are many reasons (like being difficult to invade) why England, Wales, Scotland, Canada and Australia have had no civil war since Culloden in 1746, having a constitutional monarchy to unify all the people is an important one. In the UK, 'peace' in formal speech is "The Queen's Peace".
    Elizabeth II was dignified and she put public duty before personal feelings all her life; a woman born in 1926 would want to live by the values and customs of the 1920s and 1930s. A head of state should never be discredited by a wave of popular emotion alone (rates of suicide & self-harm in England & Wales increased considerably in the 4 weeks after Princess Diana died). Those who appeal to sentiment should recall: the emotional needs of Diana's bereaved sons aged 15 & 12 were being attended to, when the Queen was silent immediately after Princess Diana died on 31st August 1997 (she did so on 5th Sept).
    Of course Elizabeth II & Prince Philip had their failings as parents; King Charles III's first marriage was a tragic mistake; Prince Philip could be tactless. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the service they give, and for the difference the monarchy makes for the better, in the UK & the world. There will always be violence and political problems in the world, and billions of people who know or understand nothing of the huge, tangible power for peace and stability the British crown is for everyone in Britain, the commonwealth and for the world. Since the 1700s, billions of people have lived under the British crown without civil war, lynching, dictatorship in their lives. God save King Charles III.

She even had no problem going to Dublin and making peaceful gestures with the IRA, even though they were directly responsible some death in her family, during her lifetime. The Monarchy could have really ended at this point. Sadly, I don't think it will continue for much longer. Phillip and the way he placed flowers spoke volumes. I’m not buying it. The Queen should’ve ran down from Balmoral the second the people began to mourn. She is the Queen of the UK - not just her family. She swore to serve her country. Yes her grandchildren were mourning, but the people were mourning too. And she swore to serve the people. She didn’t. The government practically had to beg her to come down.

      I have to agree. I mean a lot of people are saying that she’s the queen she shouldn’t have to expose her family matters to the public (especially when the queen doesn’t even like Diana and she may have a hand in her death) it is her duty to get off her soap box and tend to the public’s grief regardless of her personal relationship towards Diana.

    • @bloxybuildz5753

      I don’g think the queen should have rushed straight from Balmoral, the people there are her people too, not only people in London. I do think the Royal Family should have given a statement earlier, but she did the right thing, taking care of the 2 boys first.

      She didn’t stay in Balmoral for the sake of the people there. She stayed there to get away from the media etc. It’s basically her holiday home.
      The Royal family should’ve given a statement the second they found out about her death, the flag should’ve went at half mast as soon as her death was announced and not wait until her funeral. The Queen should’ve come down from Balmoral to help her people mourn, she only had to go herself, there was no need for her to bring the entire family. All they wanted was the Queen to help her people mourn.
      She let down the people a few times in her life for selfish reasons, this was definitely one of those reasons.
      She hated Diana, that’s why she didn’t want to come down. It had nothing to do with the grandchildren.
