This was my idea like 2 or 3 years ago now. I figured the Labo was a test run for their next console gimmick.
I also think the Mario Kart AR game was them playing around with an AR gimmick instead of a VR. They also did some AR mobile game stuff. I thought their next console would be something playing around with the AR/VR concepts or something new altogether.
So either that was their plan, and they scrapped it. But used all that R&D to make Labo and a few AR games. Or they're still planning on doing it.

As someone who's made VR games before, scrolling inside VR goggles is the most guaranteed way to make your users puke. VR *has* to be a one-to-one mapping for it to work. Also, porting games to VR is not as difficult as you think. Quest has libraries for both Unreal and Unity that are basically plug and play. Of course, some shaders will break here and there, but nothing that can't be fixed. The most difficult part of VR game development is the game design. How are you going to use physical space and how is the player going to interact with the game world.
My background for reference: BSc in Computer Science and Game Technologies, Minor in Game Design, Currently Software Engineer working full time in Unity.

    • @iixxion
      @iixxion  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

That's my entire point: dev teams don't want to reinvent their games to build around the physical space. They aren't going to do that. They want to take their existing games and make them work with the headset. That's what Nintendo is offering here.

    • @rhythmrobber
      @rhythmrobber หลายเดือนก่อน

@@iixxion sounds like you missed their point completely... you were stating that Nintendo solved the motion sickness problem, and I can guarantee you that having a POV that moves irrelative to your physical body is the BEST way to get motion sickness.
The next big problem is low resolution and framerate, and there is no way that Nintendo is putting out a handheld device that performs well enough to support high resolution, high framerate VR. Pretty sure they even said it wasn't even going to be as strong as the PS5 - a system that doesn't have perfect VR either.
Lastly, there's the issue of cost. IF Nintendo were to do deliver on all this, the cost of all the hardware and lenses, etc would make the new console astronomically expensive. Look at how expensive PSVR or PC VR headsets are, and those are separate from the actual device powering the VR. Your only proof is that you found some patents, but you forget just how many patents Nintendo puts out and ignores.
If Nintendo does anything 3D with their console, it almost certainly wouldn't go beyond putting a camera on your TV, and have a mode you can switch to that creates a 3DS-like effect that makes it look like things on your screen have actual depth, or maybe an AR effect where things are projected into your room from the camera.
Considering the Yooka-Replaylee announcement with the eyeballs, I think a camera that looks at you and/or glasses are pretty likely - not to mention the Alarmo, which is also detecting your body with sensors, presumably as a "live test" of features that will be in the next console.

The switch 2 will be released between March-May. There is a shell of the prototype from December of 2023 and yes many devs have confirmed that it is what it is like. The Wii U game pad is not the switch 1 it can't play anywhere you want unless there is a plug for the Wii U system. It is just a game pad. You can't walk off with the game pad and go to the park and keep playing on the game pad.

So, we could have a switch '2' for a maximum of 450 and the glasses opltionally for max 150. It's good, it isn't going to be mandatory, that would be crazy. This just doesn't remotely match up with facts we have. You can currently go and look at the parts Nintendo has manufactured and shipped. It is all public objective information. We literally know all the specs, the size, the form factor etc. We also know it has a dock with a fan. We know it has detachable joycon that are redesigned to match the new size.
Trying to predict what Nintendo will do based on their patents is huge waste of time. They simply patent everything in case they can use it as legal firepower.

I hope they don't do this, they can't afford it and console gaming in general is too fragile right now for one of the big 3 to fall flat on its face. We gamers like to think we're cutting edge tech guys, but we're not. In fact console and PC gamers, we're the opposite, we're ultra conservative tech guys, we like living in our very well worn tech grooves, grooves that have been worn into deep trenches, and we hate leaving our entrenched positions. The WII-U was soundly rejected for veering too far out of these trenches. VR has been soundly rejected for the same reason despite gaming companies trying for decades to make it a thing. I mean just look at our vocabulary, what is something new to gaming called? A gimmick.
Yes Nintendo has only done the straight upgrade from gen to gen once. And if they had any sense of self preservation they'd learn from that and do it again. The NES to SNES was by far (by FAR) their most smooth and successful console generation transition. Every other time they flop and then have to dig themselves out of that hole with a new gen. If they flop now, with the state console gaming is in, it might be the end of Nintendo. Just do the thing that'll make them billions and secure their place and straight power upgrade from the Switch.

Nintendo was built around gimmicks. The reason the Wii U failed was because they poorly marketed it, making people believe that it was an accessory to the Wii instead of the next generation by heavily focusing on advertising the gamepad. Also, Nintendo does so well not only because of their systems, but because of their games. They manage to make games that are incredibly well made and polished that run smoothly on systems that are leagues weaker than the other systems. Nintendo can push out the weirdest system out and if the games on it follow the same quality as they have been for the Switch, they won’t be facing any problems

I am so sorry, yet not sorry to say this.
I see way too many people state what all people do and don't want. And they put their foot in their mouth all the time when they do.
Seen a self proclaimed story critic stat about a story, "This story is trash, and nobody want to see this kind of junk." Meanwhile, wile he is posting this about the story in question, that has been out for only a month at the time he posted his comment, the story has had over a thousand likes.
    Let that sink in.
Of late, the Vatican has a new anime mascot named Luce (pronounced, Lu-chee), to get the youths of today to look at the church. Many religious types who hate anime, have stated that, "Nobody is going to like this thing, that has noting to do with God." Meanwhile, there is a lot of fan art being made of Luce. And even Michael Knowles from the Daily Wire, a very religious group of people, has stated that he likes this new Luce. Wile one of he colleagues Matt Walsh, had yet to comment on Luce. But everyone is expecting him to bash it big time, because he strait up hates anime, and calls it demonic.
So many from the religious stat nobly likes this Luce, nobody asked for this, nobody wants this, and nobody needs this. Meanwhile many other religious types love Luce, and say that it's cute and will do what it was made to do, make religion attractive to the youth that is not even looking at it, but will have a look at Luce, and what it's all about.
Let all of that sink in also.
So think real hard about what you said, that nobody wants to stand up wile using VR.
You so sure about what everybody does and does not want, to make such an open statement as that? O.o
Matt Wash had said, VR is the worst tech ever made. VR is only made to help companies to beam advertisements into peoples brains. I am not making that up. He actually said that. >.>
If you truly think that nobody wants to stand wile using VR, that makes me think you know ruffly as little about VR as Matt Walsh does.
    -
I have been into VR since the start. Back when Google Cardboard, and Oculus Gear VR was new. And I can tell you, Unless someone is using the PlayStation VR, or playing flight or driving sims, about 80% of VR users are playing VR wile standing.
Look at the Quest. That was made to be played wile standing, and so are many of the games made for it.
Think, when full body tracking can be used in games, or at least foot tracking, and games such as Blades And Sorcery lets you kick in real life with your real foot as an attack, why would anyone not want to stand to play such an upstanding VR game?
You also have such things as VRchat, where full body tracking is used a lot, by those who can afford it. And many of them have that, so they can do tings like make their avatar dance and such for everyone to see.
Think about that. Think about all of that.
    -
Aside from that. I have also been predicting that Nintendo's new system will incorporate VR somehow. Been saying it since the start of this year of 2024. And may likely use some VR glasses such as XREAL Air, Rokid Air, RayNeo Air, or VITURE, that mostly already works with the Nintendo Switch right out of the Box. So the tech to make it all work is already there. Nintendo does not have to do much else new.
And as you pointed out, just as I had with others, Nintendo did make their LABO VR Headset for the Switch.
And had given both Breath Of The Wild and Mario Odyssey usable VR modes that work with the LABO VR Headset. Meaning Nintendo is truly thinking about VR again since the Virtual Boy.

Sounds juicy and I agree. I've been saying in various discussions that VR is the next gaming frontier and I believe Nintendo will follow this. They want a system that is a total differentiator from other platforms and VR is that platform but done as you say in a Nintendo way.
People laughed at LABO but that was a total test for not only VR but research ideas for the next system done in a cheap, playful way with cardboard. Quite ingenious actually.
Nintendo is not happy to have 'another console' remember they are a toy company at heart and I believe the next system will put them back on that path. As a designer I'm very excited because I love the 'Nintendo difference' and the fact they're prepared to try and possibly fail with new creative ideas. Thats the Nintendo I love.
Ahh man you've got me excited with this. I have other ideas in regards to controllers too but hopefully this speculation will come true or something very close to it will!
