Should the England manager be English? | LBC debate

- Thomas Tuchel has been confirmed as England's new manager, becoming the Three Lions' third foreign coach.
The German, who has also previously managed Paris St Germain, becomes only the third non-Englishman to hold the post after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Labelling it an "honour", the German manager explained taking up the role ahead of England's 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign is a "huge privilege".
Gareth Southgate's successor had been in talks with the FA in recent weeks, with the decision to recruit Tuchel approved by the FA Board early last week according to reports.
Tuchel will be assisted by English coach Anthony Barry, who is currently the assistant manager for the Portugal national team under Roberto Martínez.
Apologising to fans who want an English coach managing the nation, he said: "I am sorry that I have a German passport.
"All of these supporters felt my passion for the Premier League and the country. I loved to live here.
"Hopefully I can show them that I am proud to be the English manager and I will do everything to show respect to this job and this country."
But Tuchel told reporters he brings a "British edge" to that German passport.

Farage doesn't think england should have a German manager but he has a German wife ha
His wife's not England manager derrr

The last time an English trainer won the First Division/Championship/PL was Howard Wilkinson in 1992 with Leeds. I think that says it all. I really hope TT can win a trophy.
Why is this news?
Why are you here if you don’t care ?
Because football is important to a lot of people in this country. Though mostly working class, so I guess that's a problem.
I think everyone has to be English. The dinner staff at St George’s park, the cleaners etc. not way to be proper loyal.
The callers this programme gets 😂
and the fact this is even a topic for debate highlights the level of racism 😔
Well... yeah. It's a national team. If there aren't any English managers of the calibre required, then we need to do better and produce them.
How did they feel when the Lionesses won the Euros ???
Posted before you listened to the video, huh? He made this point to one of the callers already.
Why would an English political figure with German political leanings and a reliance on Aussie news be speaking on English football other than to spread xenophobia
Could you imagine Germany having an English manager no chance, of course it matters, England should be managed by an "Englishman"
Not even England want an English Manager, so the chances of some successful International Team like Germany wanting one are zero anyway. Better to be going the way of the English Cricket Team and appointing someone with a bit of flair.
That's because English managers are still trying to sit on 1-0 leads and are terrified of generating offense.
In a lot of sports the coach/manager position has the same nationality requirements as the players, it's actually weird that football doesn't. That's just a statement of fact, not an opinion either way on what should or should not be.
Tom, we all work waistcoats just because of Southgate. I’m heartbroken he’s stepped down. Let’s give Thomas a chance.
Id prefer if he was English but let's face it, he's a step up from Southgate and noone has better qualities and CV, that is available.
You can't criticise too much when we've already had 2 foreign managers.
It does take gloss off any future achievements, but then again, we haven't achieved much.
Garbage has a German wife, isn’t he? Couldn’t he find a beautiful English rose? 😉 Dan is a patriot who doesn’t believe that England can win the championship… very patriotic. 🙃
I understand the argument that a “national team” should consist of that nation’s peoples and not people from a different country. But if you don’t have anyone else better available, there is no such rule against it, why not get a top coach who has experience winning 🏆??
Heartbreaking takes from my compatriots
Gareth Southgate was the best manager England had had, and will ever have.
The improvement from England never getting through qualifiers to making it into quarters, semis and finals cant be underestimated.
As a non-football fan, I dont get the fascination with winning all the time. That and sacking a manager as soon as you lose. The whole nature of the game is one team wins, one loses.
The national disgrace caller is Colin from Portsmouth is'nt he?
did england not used to have a non English manager before?
Some real Basil Fawltys here
We've had an Italian and a Swede previously, was Farage proud of them?
People are ok with black people playing for England but not with tuchel as manager. Why???
I think in 2024 if you are still thinking like that we have more things to worry about than football.
If he's a Smurf and goes on to win a major trophy I couldn't care less
Like to know where this bloke is getting 100 to 1 for England. I'll take that! Who's the bookmaker?
Xenophobic? That's the question for thomas tuchel if england play germany in the world cup.. That's the concern of english fans like..joe cole saying in 2010 south africa, capello and his staff in the england training camp hearing them more passionate about italy games than the England team...

@@kb4903 lol that's a great answer too. Let's hope so 👍🏼
The problem is that England doesn’t have that many top level managers. Basically a handful and none of them have that much experience at the highest level. When you compare us to countries like France, Germany and Spain who seem to have a wealth of talented managers, it’s not really a surprise we’d be willing to try a non English manager.
Honestly... 😳
Who cares, most of the team aren't English.
English is a race, unlike British which is a nationality.
Let's put it another way, you can have Africans playing for France, but they will never be Gauls.
British is not a nationality, it's a geographic term, british isles, like European or scandinavian.

German manager managing a majority non English football team, but don't notice this progressive utopia you might be called a name by a useful idiot, and there can honestly be nothing worse than being labelled "fill in here" by people who dispise you and always will because you refuse to stop noticing reality.
