      Actually the SG-1000 did get released outside of Japan! The OG model did manage to get a release in New Zealand, and the SC-3000 got to Australia, France, Italy, and Finland, in addition to New Zealand.
      The SG-2000 Model also made it to Taiwan.
      This is even mentioned in the video.

    5:20 That's not strange at all mate, the Colecovision, MSX, TI-99/4A, and SG-1000 all share similar hardware.
    11:36 That's not true anymore, in 2010 it was ported and released to Colecovision, at "teampixelboy" you can see the status of what's been ported.

    The SG-1000 looks similar to the Colecovision and MSX as well as other systems because they actually use the exact same CPU. Many systems back then used the Z80 CPU.

    I don't have one of these, and in Colombia are pretty rare and expensive. What I did to play Sega 1000 and Master System was to mod my Dreamcast with a Mini SD reader (Removed serial port jack and soldered it directly to the pcb) to launch those two retro consoles homebrew emulators ( both SG-1000 & SMS have emulators well developed specially for the console) via the mighty DREAMSHELL R4.0. One advantage is not having to use the gdrom drive at all when playing from sd. Its nice to be able to play retro sega systems on original sega hardware. Both emus are extremely well developed. I recommend this option for those who are fans of this astonishing consoles, I think theSMS is definetly better than the NES.

      Boojakascha I take it you mean the home computer SC-3000. I found several references online all claiming it was released in Finland, but not Scandinavia (I don't count anything but Norway, Sweden and Denmark as Scandinavia). For example, the segaretro article (segaretro dot org/SC-3000), and dev dot to/buntine/the-historical-obscurity-of-the-sega-sc-3000-personal-computer-1hac).
      The most interesting one I found was a Finnish blog that was perfectly understandable with Google Translate: miljoonalaatikko dot com/sega-sc-3000. It confirms the SC-3000 was officially distributed through electronics stores, and it was reported on in the media, e.g. a automobile and tech magazine called Technical World. The blog post also makes the point that the SC-3000 was noted for having good price to performance, having solid circuitry, and being easy to program for. So, even though there was a lack of software at the start, enthusiast would just write their own.

    Great video once again THGM!!
    I have played a couple of SG-1000 on emulation, and it's one of those consoles that really has me curious, and I will probably get one sooner or later when the opportunity arises. It's no technological marvel by any means, bu then again, neither was the Atari 2600 or the Colecovision, and yet they still hold a place of wonder in our hearts. What gets me onto the SG-1000 is the fact that the core of the system is what went on to be the Master System, with the specifications being beefed up, but the heart essentially the same, the famous Zilog Z80, and it surprises me just how much you can squeeze out of that processor with just a little more work on the accompanying components. Another thing I find interesting is that thanks to the SG-1000 existing, the importance of backwards compatibility was opened up to Sega, and later on to other companies like Sony and Microsoft, and even Nintendo although they took their time with that on the home console market and only really embracing the concept from the beginning on their handhelds.
    Such a shame, the SG-1000 could have been so much more if marketed to more places and opened up to 3rd party., but then Sega have always had an air of arrogance about them with their consoles... every company has their dark side I guess.

      Do you own a SEGA Master System Mk1 with card slot? You can play SG-1000 on the Master System. Via card or cartridge, cartridge you will need a Master System flash cart to load the ROMS as I don't think SG-1000 cartridges fit in the Master System, It is backwards compatible with the SG-1000 library of games.

    • @finaltuned2755
      @finaltuned2755 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is why the SG -1000 is better described as the fetus of the MasterSystem, because it's still fundamental the same base hardware architecture but with upgrades.
      Check it even the Sega My Card slot on the Master System which is what all the SG-1000 series uses. The Sega MasterSystems real name in Asia is also just called the Sega Mark III - to mark the fact that it was the third time it has been upgraded and re-released again with slight branding alterations here and there.
      Overall Sega released far more hardware than Nintendo ever did because Sega did not go by the Nintendo standard of what was and wasn't successful (see GTVs video on the SG-1000 for details), while Sega upgraded hardware, Nintendo wanted to upgrade their software instead but keep their hardware exactly the same, this is why Nintendo hardware was kept so cheap enough to sell a lot because Nintendo kept it the same and it continued being exactly the same for the best part of a decade and a half at a good price, but it was the software that was more expensive on Nintendo's side by comparison.
      The reason why is because rather than do what SEGA was doing by upgrading their hardware every couple of years to increase its power and overall development leading to the MasterSystem, Nintendo instead opted to upgrade its software - that's why it was significantly more expensive than Sega software and why getting Sega software is fairly easier compared to the hardware, because Nintendo included chips in their software cartridges along with the ROM files, which were needed to make the game work on the Famicom/N.E.S.
      Sega was definitely more edgy and arrogant than Nintendo overall, but while Sega preferred to upgrade their hardware more. Nintendo upgraded their software more. This meant that SEGA hardware was generally a bit more expensive but once you invested, the software was cheaper and easier to get than Nintendo software.

    My childhood gaming system. Best cartridges are The Castle, Hero and Pitfall II (but once finished you will not play often); Starjacker and Monaco GP (both instantly challenging and playable); Flicky (controls will seem annoying at first but keep at it); and my personal favourite - Lode Runner (many other versions around but the Sega one is smooth and near silent, making it very tense. However it doesn't offer much replay value). Also look out for Sir Roderick's Quest (a New Zealand release) on the SC-3000. Second tier games include - Sinbad Mystery, Star Force, Exerion, Gulkave, Elevator Action and Zippy Race. Avoid - Pacar (repetitive), Pop Flamer (several reasons), N-Sub (too easy), Yamato (too limited), Orguss (looks fantastic, gameplay is basic), Golgo 13 (repetitive and too easy). Almost everything else, even Safari Hunting, while not great, have hidden depths if you play them enough.

    The Master System used the same game cartridges as the SG-1000. The Master System can play SG-1000 games, but doesn't always display them correctly. Hence, the Master System isn't officially compatible with SG-1000 games.

    • @finaltuned2755
      @finaltuned2755 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SG-1000 is just the MasterSystem as a fetus, the MasterSystem is the SG-1000 series with all the upgrades, same fundamental base hardware, same compatibility - even the Sega My Card slot on the MasterSystem was just the SG-1000 hardware built into the MasterSystem. So MasterSystem still technically is the first home Sega hardware console to a degree.
      Your experience might not have displayed correctly because you were using NTSC hardware with PAL software or vice versa.

      The Master System displays legacy TMS colours in a different way than a SG-1000 and SC-3000 does.
      This results in SG-1000 games' graphics appearing darker when played on Master Systems.

    Really nice summary. As a massive fan of the Master System growing up I was always very vocal about how much more powerful the Master System was compared to the NES. Growing up I had no idea that there had been 2 or more other consoles previously released by Sega. The SG1000 being released on the same day as the Famicom is a joke, the Famicom wipes the floor with it! I'm tempted to get one for the collection though, as a huge Sega fan it feels somehow sacriligious not to at least have one on the shelf 😁

    • @finaltuned2755
      @finaltuned2755 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SG-1000 and SG-1000 Mark II are better described as the fetus phases of the MasterSystem because they were still basically based on the same fundamental architecture, the Master System was still just the same SG-1000 series but with all the upgrades. That's why the MasterSystem is backwards compatible with the SG-1000 series and even includes the Sega My Card slot from the SG-1000 on the front side.
      Sega also released far more hardware than Nintendo did overall, because while Sega preferred upgrading their hardware, Nintendo instead preferred to upgrade their software - which meant Nintendo software cartridges were often more expensive to buy - which is something that Nintendo has always done to secure full profit as much as possible. This meant Nintendo including certain chips in their software cartridges which increased the overall price, but they were necessary as the games would not run without them on base Famicon/N.E.S hardware - so there's a little hint for some readers here, Nintendo hardware wasn't necessarily more powerful, just Nintendo being characteristically crafty by moving the upgrade costs to the software instead which they knew they'd shift.
      That's why Nintendo hardware was often cheaper because they kept the same base system in circulation for the best part of a decade and a half rather than upgrade every couple of years like Sega did, so Sega hardware was a bit more expensive but once invested, Sega software was generally cheaper and easier to get.
      Sega and Nintendo just had different strategies all in all, so if you judge Sega by Nintendo's standards obviously there will be inconsistencies, see GTV's SG-1000 video for more in-depth explanation.

    The Sega MasterSystem is still acknowledged as the first home Sega hardware console because the SG-1000 was really better described as the MasterSystem fetus, it was still the same base proprietary hardware but just re-upgraded, hence the SG-1000 to the SG-1000 Mark II to the SG-1000 Mark III - which was called that just to mark the fact that it was the third time it had been upgraded, and the Sega Mark III was just exactly the same machine as the MasterSystem but with a different brand for other territories in Asia, Australia, New Zealand and some parts of Europe as it never came to the Americas due to the American Atari crash of the industry there in 1983.
    And of course, all software libraries of the SG-1000 series leading to the definitive MasterSystsm were all backwards compatible because it was still the same fundamental console with variant upgrades like the FM Synth unit, which is why the MasterSystem even still had the 'Sega My Card' card slot on the front side of it, so calling it a completely different console is a bit of a stretch because it still fits the bill of what became the first universal SEGA home console. It wasn't technically a failure either because Sega didn't use the same approach as the Nintendo standard, Sega released far more hardware and upgrades than Nintendo ever did in its time, because Nintendo's strategy was to upgrade their software - by including additional chips into the actual cartridges with the ROM files, so while their Famicom (Family Computer), or N.E.S in the West, was cheap enough to sell a lot over all as it was the same exact system that Nintendo was churning out for the best part of a decade and a half, it's software was where Nintendo followers had their wallets hit the hardest.

    The SEGA Master system was the first or one of the first backwards compatible consoles ever, you can play SG 1000 games on the Master System via the card slot on the front.. Or if you have a Master System Everdrive cart you can play the SG 1000 cartridge roms.. Atari 5200 could of been the first backwards compatible system, that is something I will look in to.. Defo sure it was SEGA to first do Backwards compatibility... I would love a SG system as I F-in love SEGA. Oh and I knew SG 1000 was the first Console..

    I found out about this system only when I started diving deep into emulation through the likes of RetroArch. It deeply fascinated me that Sega had released a console more primitive than the Master System. I liken it to the equivalent of the ColecoVision. And, with games being limited in complexity to somewhere between an Atari 2600 and a NES, it was no surprise that they were, for the most part, pretty forgettable. But I have the benefit of being able to appreciate archaic retro games from within their proper context since I grew up with the likes of the Atari 2600 and the Apple IIe. It's easier to consider SG-1000 games for their fascinating history as opposed to their entertainment potential in today's gaming landscape. The game that probably fascinated me the most out of the system's library was the car game Pacar -- very transparently a Pac-Man clone, but also inspired in no small part by Sega's own Head On, an arcade car-based game which, despite predating Pac-Man, involves eating dots in a maze while trying not to run into enemies. It doesn't get much more fascinating than that, really.

It's even rumored that jealousy over Sega of America's success lead Sega of Japan to make bad decisions just to spite the American branch. In other words they pretty much deserved what was coming to them.

    You think THATS overlooked? At least in the UK the Master System sold good. Here in the good ol’ US of A it was considered a poor man’s NES, and lots of people I’ve met (including my own father) thought Sega’s home consoles started with Genesis and Game Gear. I honestly prefer Master System to the NES, but I fuckin’ love both consoles regardless as they both had some great games released for them.

      If you are a true Clive Sinclair zealot, you wouldn't be ashamed at the fact, as he made all the microcomputers with business and education in mind, and didn't want them to be games machines...

      It's a good thing you could hide a whole city behind a 5200, keeping it safe from a nuclear attack. Because that's the reaction I imagine coming from THGM when he see how you insulted his precious Speccy. But seriously, that thing looked embarrassing even by early 80's standards.

    • @ressljs
      @ressljs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He openly admits he uses "clickbait" thumbnails, and he even explains that he doesn't like them but they actually do work at getting more views so he does them anyway. But you can't say the video titles are clickbait. This one is very accurate in describing what the video is about: The SG-1000 was Sega's first console. A clickbait title would be: "Does it suck? Sega's SG-1000" or "Proof that Sega was alway shite at consoles." And I wouldn't call him shallow either, as he brings a lot of information, and not just rambling opinions.

    • @ressljs

      OK, Trophy Huntress, not trying to argue and notice I'm not saying anything you said is wrong (I seem to anger people or without that being my intention), but here's my responses:
      1. You clearly have your mind made up about the thumbnail, and I really won't argue, it is cheap clickbait.
      2. When the OP said, "I found this guy to be very clickbaity" he is implying that everything about him (including titles) is clickbaity.
      3. Good point, but reading wiki is boring, and THGM put together a decent video with relevant footage.
      4. Probably, but I think this guy's style is entertaining.

      I think the Sega Pong machine was with a number of games, but all in the memory and you change game with a switch, much like most other pong machines. The Nintendo ones I think were several complete units, each with their own game, and each one a different colour... imagine a Pong machine mixed with a Game & Watch.
      I could be wrong about both, because I'm going off memory and it was a long time ago when i found them on the internet, in the dark corners that game companies prefer you forget exist... hehehehe
