    I'm not a rich person, and because of that I am not "well-travelled". But I have a collection of Glass' recordings from which I listen to every day. I think that he has found a way to create a new and different and unique state of mind, a new experience. As chemists or architects create new things, Glass has made something new under the sun with his music and it has become a very positive and enriching gift for us.

      What does anything you just said have to do with being rich? You think only rich people are allowed to listen to Glass?

      @@coolandgood1010 Sorry to annoy you. No, not at all. But access to live performance and travel to see performances, as well as access to recordings is most of the time out of my being able to afford. Also, time, with my aging and its associated limitations prohibits me from hearing and seeing things I love. I feel lucky to enjoy what is left of life, and his music makes it all lighter and happier. I envy the "rich" nothing. My children have taught me that wealth comes in many forms.

      If you can listen to Glass, understand and feel his music, you are rich. I feel pity for all who will never experience what Glass compositions have to offer.

    I regularly visit a friend who is progressing into dementia.
    She watches simple tv programs and films but cannot follow the story lines .
    Sometimes, I place headphones over her ears so she can enjoy music that way.
    I played the soundtrack to The Hours, by Glass.
    She said, “I could listen to this music all day…”.

    I went to a small concert in Big Sur where Glass and some of his students performed. I happened to sit next to one of the students and she said that Glass was the most supportive teacher she had ever had.

    Philip Glass has compositions that take us back to meditation, to mental quieting. And he has compositions like this that speak to the heart.

    “The Blessed Lord spoke:
    Many of my births have passed away,
    And also the births of thee, Arjuna.
    I know them all;
    Thou dost not know them, Scorcher of the Foe (Arjuna).
    Although I am birthless and my self imperishable,
    Although I am the Lord of All Beings,
    Yet, by controlling my own material nature,
    I come into being by my own supernatural power.
    Whenever a decrease of righteousness
    Exists, Descendant of Bharata,
    And there is a rising up of unrighteousness,
    Then I give forth myself,
    For the protection of the good
    And the destruction of evil doers;
    For the sake of establishing righteousness,
    I come into being from age to age.”

      This passage has always captivated me. I've thought about it and been inspired by it for about sixty years now. I'm approaching the time when I might witness what it means. It's made me a much more charitable person than I was when I first encountered it as a teenager. I believe it's implications. But I will see or just become something else.. Maybe dust.

      The leaves on a maple tree are identical. The clouds and the stars in the sky are repetitive. The waves on the beach. Sunrise and sunset. Breathing. All these things ceaselessly re-occur. We seek them out. We revel in their constancy. Like this piece. It's so natural and exhilarating at the same time. I listen to Glass's music every single day. It's the same and it's different every day.
