It was not until hearing him talking about Palestine after Oct’7th did I re-reflect on his book and realized that his book is rather a popular writing than a serious history research. Pity.
yes, he is a popular writer not a serious researcher. Any serious researcher would say, there are no Palestinians people. In fact between 1904 and 1947 950K Arabs immigrated to the land of Israel. A Palestinians Arab identity did not exist until 1964. But this would be counterproductive to the narrow 1990s Leftist Israeli "narrative" which they tried to separate the Jewish identity of the state to a more radical secular, partial marxist state. For this they needed to shed the biblical connection to the land of the Israeli identity which blew up in their face as they put all their capital on the PLO's supposed effort to suppress the many other terrorist groups such as Hamas (religious rather than national) support among the "riffraff." This blew up in 2001 which ironically also saw the use of rocket fire on Israeli civilians from Gaza. Oct 7th seemed to have relegated the two-state farce back to the fringe of the fringe of Israeli public as it was before 1993.
I don't know what kind of 'battle for the soul" he's talking about, there is a real battle, a gen-i-dal one (avoiding utube censure) in Gaza, right now. His country is on trial for gen-de at the highest court on Earth.
He doesn't believe in a soul so? And he's totally deluded about religion, the Jewish, Christian & the Islamic one for that matter not forgetting the role that secular ideologies will play in the role of allowing war that will ultimately culminate in the forcing of a powerful world wide dictatorship. That's where all this is heading. 🎉
He doesn't say anything about occupation. I like very much his books but when I hear him talking about this it seams like he thinks there is no occupation. Or the interviewers don't ask the right questions. Does he really believes those talks before the 7th of October would change the reality of the palestinians? If they never did before, if the settlements never stopped, and we know the position of this government about it.
@MrAbuYaz, does this mean that it would be justified of the natives of the U.S. if they would eradicate all the emigrants since it was their land first?
Your comment is exactly what he is trying to say that is wrong. One side's justice is anothers injustice. In order to achieve peace we must not think in these terms. In a way, looking for justice in this conflict is looking for war
@@Adiluzzbecause groups form such fake, self-centered notions of justice. Real justice is about how do we bring as much true healing, to _all who have been hurt_ , as possible.
And why are they being occupied and suppressed? Perhaps it’s all the wars and violence they started. Israel has offered to end the Palestinian occupation 3 times and ended physical occupation in Gaza. The response was a rejection of peace and violence.
Look at sky news conveniently and carefully selecting who they interview to reafirm their views. More dangerous is harari presenting his personal ideology as the objective view of a historian.
Very disappointed to hear Hariri refer to the 'peace process' as if there was a legitimate peace process. Israel's government would only ever accept capitulation from the Palestinian people. The Olso Accords were not progress for the people in the West Bank, though many in the Palestinian Authority have done well out of it financially.
Both sides have messed up badly. Bad Palestinian leadership , Netanyahu and others definitely moved the Israel to a right wing used to a status quo comfy with the occupation.
Yes, all of the Palestinian leadership has done well out of the conflict, they live in luxury, and the poor arabic/palestinian people are being robbed by their leaders. Even the humanitarian deliveries (from UNWRA and Israel and the USA among others) are being stolen from the delivery trucks by Hamas and sold at inflated prices on the black market... That is NOT Israel's doing.
It is quite unsettling to see someone as bright as Harari pretend he has no idea about Netanyahu's real intentions. Harari's adam's apple shows, though, that he is feeling very uneasy about this question and that he is going to have to tell a lie in public.
Credit to Yalda Hakim for asking all the right questions but unfortunately, as usual, Yuval Harari shows his Zionist colours. He side stepped all the difficult questions, flying utterly irrelevant kites in order to confuse the listener with irrelevancies. As for his knowledge of why there's conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, he's miles off target, deliberately of course, because any historian worth their salt, especially one from Israel, would know exactly why a conflict exists between Israel and Palestine. Yuval should stick to stuff he's knowledgeable about and leave Israel-Palestine to the experts.
Now don’t forget that Netanyahu presented a greater Israel map in September without Gaza and West Bank. So no. It’s not just Hamas. That is disingenuous. Also Israel have never presented a fair peace deal to the Palestinians. Ever.
As long as any of the two is in power there will be no peace I think. Netanyahu should step down yesterday. Also Hamas needs to be removed from power in Gaza.
Yuval got it way too wrong to claim that hamas stopped peace. A lot of people believe that the Abraham accords were erasing palestine completely from the equation. It's what Netanyahu aimed for. Hamas are desperate, that's why Oct 7 happened.
Palestinians want a one Muslim state solution. Hamas said why they did 7th of October, they called their operation Al aqsa flood and they said it is to avenge the events in Al Aqsa during April that year. They are desperate for what exactly?

As an Israeli historian this talk from Yuval can appear "balanced" but misses the key points of the violence of Israel's settler colonialism of Palestine and Israel's ongoing genocide ( which ICJ ruled as plausible). His refusal to explicitly denounce the genocide is telling.
There is no genocide, that's a fable, anyone with half a brain can understand that. Yuval Harare is a gifted thinker and a thoughtful man: his limitations are those of liberal Zionism, which corresponds to how Israel wishes others to see it rather than what it actually is. Regardless of the morality of Hamas' tactics, the much-touted rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Israel was never intended to benefit Palestinians let alone offer them an independent state: it is designed to offer a fig-leaf solution to the Palestine question that will allow Saudi Arabia and Israel to dominate a new Indian Ocean-Mediterranean Sea trading route.
