@@dylanq1871I was in college band with the tuba player in this group. He spent a year at our university. I'd never heard a tuba play Flight of the Bumblebee before Daryl did it. He was THAT good. And he was a great guy.

Humbling. I played trumpet throughout high school and was first trumpet in marching band, stage band, and jazz band, including soloing in jazz band. I was not as good as either of the two trumpet players highlighted. It was the big fish in the little pond thing. I was the big fish, but in a little pond. Put me in a lake and I'd be an average size fish. Put me in the sea and I'd be a small fish. These high schoolers are the big fish.

Pretty cool to see young Don Braden, Chris Botti, and Eric! Bob Curnow made a lot of good things happen for many people!

This video is why I grabbed you at Berklee when I heard you practicing some 40 years ago and recommended you to all the best ensemble teachers and later to Buddy Rich to replace me. Wow, Chris Botti. pre Sting-a-like, on the jazz chair, he actually played the jazz chair on Buddy's band for a couple weeks while we backed Frank Sinatra at the Pacific Amphitheatre in L.A. in December of 1984! Paul Phillips quit the tour in Europe so when we got back to the US we needed a jazz trumpet player and Chris was highly recommended by some of the Indiana University guys on the band. I let him play a couple of the background muted solos, a couple of years later, he starts to get famous and goes on all the TV talk shows, telling everyone how much Frank loved him and would look back at him and gesture at him on the written chromatic Harmon mute solo at the end of "Come Rain or Come Shine." Sorry to break your bubble Chris, he did the same with me for another 7 years that followed, he also did it before and after me for; Charlie Turner, Tommy Porello, Buddy Childers, Walt Johnson. it was a "showbiz bit," nothing more! The irony, I got the gig with Frank, which was often lead and jazz trumpet, in January 1985, 2 weeks after Chris' "Big Moment," with Frank, Chris got more famous! Oh well, good for him, he plays well, I just didn't like him making much more of that "bit" than there really was to it, ego check Chris! Years later, I played on a "Rainforest Foundation benefit" Sting's wife, Trudy Styler, held in NYC's Radio City Music Hall, oddly enough paying homage to Frank Sinatra, I didn't go telling everyone afterwords; "I played with Sting," until I saw Chris running his mouth about his very limited time as Buddy's jazz trumpeter, to quote Buddy; "2 weeks time," exactly! In general, even if you did the gig, it's not yours to brag about, until it's actually your gig, That's why I didn't tell anyone I was Frank Sinatra's lead player, until I did gigs where I was paid by his accountant Nathan Golden from January of 1985 on. The year with Buddy Rich (1984) backing Frank all over the U.S. and Europe though great, I considered myself as being Buddy Rich's Lead Player only, even though I played hundreds of shows on lead for both acts (Buddy Rich and Frank Sinatra), )back to back that year. I was hoping since he was no longer using Charlie Turner, that I might become Frank Sinatra's lead player. I also played lead many times with; Tony Bennett, Mel Tormé, Ella Fitzgerald, Steve and Eydie, Liza Minelli and many other "big names" in the music business, but even though I was working for Liza, I was subbing for her marvelous lead player, Dave Stahl. I didn't go saying, Oh wow, "Liza looked at me!" It's what for some time the West Coast players would call J I V positive, jive ass BS, in short, uncool behavior! The interesting thing is, even though I was Frank's lead trumpet player, the claim could be equally shared with Tommy Porello, Buddy Childers and Walt Johnson who played for Frank in Las Vegas and L.A. respectively, before Me ave Stahl and Charlie Turner and of course all those greats who recorded with him in the studios, like Conrad Gozzo, some players did both, apologies if I missed any names! I'm very happy things turned out so well for you Eric, you're truly one of the all time greats! Wonderful lead, jazz, classical, writing, arranging and human being!. Bravo! I hope we get a chance to work together when COVID-19 is eradicated. Sorry about my vent on Chris, it's been bothering me for some time, perhaps a bit of bad form sour grapes on my part. I figured he was already doing well, why did he have to stretch the truth so far, I wouldn't do something like that, but I guess that's what made him the success he is, I prefer to see someone make it on their merits, like you! No hype, all pure music!

Sounds like you are the braggart. And your smack talking Chris Botti is very low class to say the least.😠

Interesting story line with a bit of "sour grapes" thrown in. Some great players names linked with Buddy and Frank. I think Eric haS DONE VERY WELL FOR HIMSELF. LOTS OF great things with students in the Toyko school area. Super writer. Chris Botti has made a big name for himself also. I don't begrudge him that-all players of that ilk appreciate a compliment from legends they have worked for.

How many lead trumpet players does it take to change a light bulb? 11. 1 to hold the light bulb while the world revolves around them and 10 others saying "That was nice, but I could do it better." Botti is holding the bulb, you're not. Too bad you couldn't let go of whatever is bugging you because all you real players with actual talent do or did what us hacks only dreamt about doing. Even a hack like me shared the stage with Ella, Chuck, Al. They all had their charitable moments. I do miss the McDonalds All American Band and the jazz group was a subset of that group, from what I remember.

@ Harrison Reed & @Daniel Peterson No, sounds like Chris was taking a bit more credit for his brief moment with Frank Sinatra as a sub on 4th trumpet with Buddy Rich's Band! I didn't dis Chris Botti,'s playing, he's a fine musician, showman & businessman, but I actually thought it was low class of him to exaggerate what was pretty much a non event, on national TV and to me, he came off as the braggart at the time at my expense! If it happened to you, perhaps you'd feel slighted too, perhaps not. I don't ever need to put someone down to build myself up and I'm my own harshest critic with many shortcomings as a player and perhaps as a human, too. Nonetheless, if you doubt my abilities on the trumpet, please check out a few clips here on TH-cam and judge for yourself. Please check my reputation as a player in NYC and I believe you'll find I've never done anything to negatively effect another musicians career and have never taken as much as a single gig away from anyone! P.S.; If I were such a braggart, you would have heard about me long before now, so spin that, while you spin your lightbulb! Some links to my "bragging" ; th-cam.com/video/ivUHgUcJZUo/w-d-xo.html, th-cam.com/video/2kyKTH6lZN4/w-d-xo.html, th-cam.com/video/4zN-1DR089M/w-d-xo.html and more recently subbing on the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra in 2019 for the amazing lead trumpeter Frank Greene. P.S. It's his gig, not mine! th-cam.com/video/zhn-fT_tNQ0/w-d-xo.html/ No I'm not God's gift to the horn and never claimed to be! I can certainly play it though!

@@braintreecat No sour grapes about Eric, we are dear friends and he earned his way by playing great! Not mad at Chris anymore, but was back when he was playing the Sinatra card strongly when he was doing the talk show circuit back as he was getting popular. He's a great businessman and used his networking skills to the max and never did an unkind thing to any trumpet player while he was part of the NYC studio scene, he just plain outsmarted and marketed himself better than everyone else! Can't fault him for that! He plays great, is a quite capable songwriter and arranger, so kudos to him! I've had a fine career, so I can't complain as I didn't have the all of the talents he used to get where he is today. He did some nice recording work with Doc Severinsen recently and showed Doc the respect he deserved, so perhaps he's matured into a fine person.
