Nothing impresses me more than someone who has made it, but who remains humble and grounded and who is still in awe of those who inspired them to pick up their instrument.
George was a no-nonsense individual. He recognized the talent Steve Luthaker has and he also was gracious enough to not disappoint his child-like desire for a Beatle to participate in that gig. George was such a wonderful man!
Mark Hamill told a story of how he and George happened to be on the same plane. Once Mark realized this asked if he could meet him. He was trying to not be too much of a Fan Boy but thanked George for his work and inspiration. George told him he liked his work too and was a Star Wars fan. It was brief but Mark took away to always be kind to his fans like George was to him. Love this story. ❤️🕉️

What I love about these guys is that they have recorded and played with many big names, yet, even they are the first to acknowledge that as soon as a Beatle walks in the room there is a entirely different level of unparalleled reverence.
I remember seeing an interview with Eric Clapton back in the early 90's. He was saying that when you're a rock star you come to expect all eyes on you when you walk into a room. But when you walk in with a Beatle, nobody sees you.

@Michael H. Lukather is indeed one of the all time greats. He has appeared on too many to mention songs from the 80's. A very underrated musician. And that's not even mentioning his work with Toto.

George to me is by far the worlds best guitar picker , singer , composer , most handsome , and greatest inventor , he did after all invent the Gretsch 6122 and invented most of the guitar chords that we all play today , he is the reason why i started to play guitar , the reason why i stopped playing guitar and the reason why i started back again , George is just tops , the bees knees , and miss him every day , glad i found this youtube clip

Knowing John Cleese’s story about George Harrison easily giving money to the Monty Python’s guys to make a film, simply because “he wanted to watch it” says how generous and caring George was.
I got to see Ringo and his All Starr Band tonight. September 10, 2022 in Pittsburgh. Great show!!! Steve played awesome! Big Props to all in the concert. Peace & Love +++
He's a cool dude. Love how personable and down to earth he is. And, he's only 62. Started Toto in '75, before he was even 20 yrs old... Holy crap!!! Amazing. And, one of the greatest session guys around.

There are always common denominators in stories about Sir George... humility and class.
You know George was never knighted, right? They offered him a Commander of the British Empire the year before he died, and he turned it down. Paul had already been knighted by that point.
The mighty Beatles...nothing like them before or will ever be again. Steve was so fortunate to hang out with George, the "quiet Beatle".
@Jim McCracken Oh, yes. No matter how famous or important a musician is, hanging out with a real Beatle has to be the thrill of a lifetime. I am sure Steve and others have pinched themselves many times.
Steve is one of the very very few persons who has played with 3 Beatles!

Steve is not a rockstar, that's a compliment. He's very down to Earth and shares the same childlike awe that we all do. Respect!

Find it absolutely amazing how this guy is a guitar rock god in his own right, yet he has stayed grounded and humbled and appreciative of everything that comes his way. What a lesson for everyone else. Thanks for sharing this with us!

What a genuine person he is. I had never taken the time to find any interviews with Steve Lukather. I'm really glad I found this. Great story teller. He talks recording, friendship, people, business and of course making music, all without an attitude. The other part of this interview where he talks about recording Beat it, is a great one too.
He knows how to tell a story...
On a much, much smaller scale... I used to be in a club band with Derrek Van Eaton as our lead vocalist. He and his brother, Lon were signed to Apple records and had their album produced by George Harrison. Lon was on several of Ringo's solo albums. (The Van Eaton album was just recently re-released.) One night, Lon and the famous Beatle friend, artist and bass player... Klaus Voorman stepped into the club we were playing at in Glendale, Ca.. We had the great local guitarist, Carlos De La Paz in the band also.
So anyway, when I found out they were both in the club (particularly Klaus) I played my heart on bass that night and walked over and said hello. Klaus liked my bass playing and asked me if I could give him bass lessons! (I was so shocked by that) I mentioned to Lon that Carlos and I were going to Donte's jazz club in L.A. to watch Larry Carlton play with Greg Mathison and one of the Porcaro brothers playing bass in a few days. So we invited Lon to go to Donte's with us and he actually went! That was a great little night of music. Larry was personable and the club was intimate, but we did not meet him.
Anyway, afterward we went to Lon's pad in Hollywood and jammed with Lon. Bob Welch's drummer also was there at the jam. (Bob Welch from the version of Fleetwood Mac and solo artist with the hit, "Ebony Eyes"). A few nights later, Lon's friend "Ritchie" jammed with Lon and Carlos. Ritchie turned out to be RINGO STARR! I was invited to jam, but I didn't go and I did not know that Ringo would be there. Man, to this day I regret not going. LOL Carlos told me Ringo was a very cool, down to Earth guy. Ringo was kind of a family man and showed Carlos a photo of his young son, Zach.
A few days later, I was at Lon and Derrek's pad and Klaus Voorman was there. I told Klaus I was honored to meet such a famous celebrity and he made me laugh, because he said, "Yeah, I am famous because I know those guys, but I have NONE of their money." LOL What was even cooler was for some reason, Klaus had the ORIGINAL piece of artwork with him that he created for the Beatle's album, "REVOLVER" and I actually got to hold it in my hands! What a trip... So these are my little true stories about the Beatles. That was a long time ago! It all happened in 1977. Those were the days, my friends.
I think my favorite incarnation of Bob Welch is the short-lived band that came after Mac, Paris. That song "Black Book" just blows me away, it was my introduction to Welch and while French Kiss was interesting pop I'll never forget that jazzy power-pop/funk in the 2 Paris albums.

Lukather is a brilliant musician. He once visited my friend's recording studio to lay down some guitar tracks for a friend or relative, and my friend said that he was amazing. He whipped out several brilliant tracks in no time flat, all keepworthy. Just an amazing musician.
If I could play the guitar like anyone, Luke would be one of my first choices. Unbelievably versatile musician with universe-class chops.
I could listen to Steve talk all day about his interesting life.

Among all the top players he seems very grounded and still speaks sometimes like a fan, despite having been there, done it all.
He talks like he wasn't a founding member of Toto, one of the greatest rock bands of all time. He has great humility.

Massive music fan and wouldn't know the guy from Adam. Know the songs. Not him. Before music TV nobody knew the Pink Floyd from Adam either. Seen them at a football ground with tens of thousands and nobody asked them for an autograph. Or even noticed them.

Toto was actually founded by Paich and Jeff Porcaro.
Roberto Vidal Garcia Yeah, I know that. But the original comment stated that Luke was a founding member, as in he started the band. Paich and Porcaro started the whole thing, the rest were asked to join.

Steve says about his relationship with Ringo “If he were Bob Smith he would still be my friend” - love that. Was how I felt about Walter Becker. He would give me rides home and we would sit in the back together having a laugh and talking about whatever.The fact that he was Walter Becker was incidental. Miss him

I'm a drummer that has always had an admiration for great lead guitarists. Steve Lukather is, and has been my favorite for years. If you happen to read this Steve, I love you man. You play with heart and soul, and that is something that cannot be tought.

Luke is such an immensely talented guy. The fact that he is so respected by other great musicians (including Jimmy Page) says a lot.
I think Luke is a class act, extremely talented and underrated musician!! His humility speaks volumes to his character!!

Funny this came around…
When George’s son Dhani graduated from Brown university, a writer from the Providence Journal saw him at a local cafe. When she asked if it was really him he invited her to sit and he agreed to an interview. George was in late stage cancer by this time. The reporter described him as genuine and gracious, ready for the future.
This always stood out to me. Glad to see it confirmed by Steve Lukather!!!
What a storyteller! This guy has enormous skills with guitar, vocals, songwriting, keyboard, et al., and he can really tell stories, and what stories! Has been an icon for me since my adolescence.
I met Steve Lukather many years ago in a grocery store in Van Nuys. He really is as nice a person in real life as he seems in his interviews! And you already know what a stellar musician he is!
After all those years of incredible success and being a definition of a virtuoso himself, it's inspiring to see this man talking so passionately about his idols and his experiences. It made me remember how I felt and fell in love for music when I was a kid. Steve still has the same feeling in his heart. Thanks man!

Brilliant player. Musician’s musician. I have seen the “All-Starr’s” with Mr Lukather twice and he excelled amongst all the excellent musicians with whom he shared the stage! Ringo put his arm around him after “Hold the Line” and they enjoyed an off-mic moment of whispers. Then, Ringo let us in on the chat: “That was about the one millionth time he has played that song, and I just had to tell him that this was THE best he’s Ever played!” His solos/outro was absolutely phenomenal - on Ringo’s birthday at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville! Brilliant. Did not know about the friendship then, but Ringo was sincere …
And I was seated across the aisle from Mrs Starr and her sister, Mrs (Joe) Walsh. Not a bad night.❤❤❤

Now that we all have access to so many great interviews with great musicians, I'm blown away by how much they all admire each other and how humble so many of the legends are. There are a handful of people on the planet with Mr. Lukather's talent, but he's just a guy telling stories about meeting people he respects. Great stuff!

I was 5 from Boston USA when the Beatles landed in America, it was on tv and even the adults were talking about it, one of my elementary teachers in 1968, 3rd grade playing Beatles records at lunch, very cool because society was very conservative in my area, the Beatles started a music revolution, literally, great memories, great show, thank you. Steve's amazing contribution to music. 🙏
He seems like a truly humble guy, and has some pretty amazing stories to tell. Saw him play with The All Starr Band back in 2014 at Pine Knob with Greg Rolie, Todd Rundgren and others, including that Ringo dude. :) Great show.

Clayton: George was GREAT. I freaked when I saw the photo from 'Magical Mystery Tour' of him holding his psychedelic Strat.
The clouds parted and a sunbeam shone down illuminating George and that awesome guitar.
I knew I needed to play the guitar.
That was forty years ago and I'm still partial to Strats.
LesPaulDisciple, I know that Mystery Tour picture well. My walk with George and the lads started before the psych stuff even. Beginning with hearing them on the BBC when I lived in France. Love those Richenbachers still, But I did finally get myself a Strat to add to my stable. In fact I will be playing in a couple hours. It is mana for me and so I gather it is for you. Thanks for sharing your story.
I've heard "'Something" probably 10,000 times.
That solo still gives me chills to this day.
Frodo: George played that solo live in the studio at the same time they were recording the string section.
Steve seems like such a real decent guy.And it’s not like he isn’t a major talent himself,he has created some of the best music of our times.But he comes across so humble and thankful , like to his friend Gregg Bissonette.. I’m sure Gregg feels the same,he’s another decent person with phenomenal talent.. I hope to always have Steve Lukather music in my life. Thanks for the great interview with such a talent

"Are you really my friend or do you just want to tell people that you know me." Steve is a boss of a person in my eyes.
Steve Lukather scared the crap out of me once. In the early 90's I worked at a custom Harley shop in the Valley. The late Miguel Ferrar was a customer and he invited me and my buddy up to his house in the hills to hang out. A bunch of guys eventually showed up including Luke. We all went out to dinner and was having a blast hanging with "big shots". Luke picked up the dinner tab (Thanks Luke!) and then we were trying to figure out what to do. I wanted to go hang out on Sunset but they said we were going up to "Lou's" house because it was Monday night and Lou had pool and poker night on Mondays.
My buddy had a chopped top '50 Merc and Miguel wanted to ride in it so I got in with Luke in his new BMW 850i and we head up to Mullholand. Now I knew Luke was a great guitar player but I had no idea if he could drive or not and as he is hauling ass all I could think of is the morning headlines that would say, "Rock star and unknown man die in car crash in the Hollywood Hills"!
We made it to Lou's house just fine though and Lou turned out to be Lou Diamond Phillips. He too was a super nice guy and told me to come back any Monday for pool and poker. Unfortunately right after that a recession hit SoCal, they passed a helmet law and it started raining everyday for a couple months. Business died and we had to shut down the bike shop and I never got the opportunity to go back to Lou's house.
Miguel was a cool dude that was nice to us nobodies when he didn't have to be. He had done Robo Cop but his career really took off shortly after. It was very sad when he passed away. He was a good musician as well.

Miguel was a great musician. I'm sure you know he played drums on Keith Moon's only solo studio album The Other Side of The Moon.

I love Steve so much since day one with Toto. What amazing stories he has and telling about getting to meet these legends he is like a little kid and so excited. And if you haven't seen it find the video where they let some kid come on stage and play during a rehearsal, thats giving back in the truest form. Next time we are in Nashville will definitely come visit the museum.

I feel the same way Steve feels about Ringo, about Steve..lol When I was first learning guitar I became aware of Luke by listening to Boz Scaggs, and then when Toto formed, oh man. I’ve been a fan ever since. Steve is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard. He seems like such a great fellow as well. God bless both of these iconic musicians. An amazing guy. His session work reads like an who's who. Grammy winner. Toto for f***s sake. Yet he is humbled in the presence of his musical heroes.
I saw Steve & Toto back in the 70s,
then I saw him again with Ringo & Friends a few years ago. He's the real deal, like George was.
