  • Vegan doctor Dr. Angie Sadeghi is a gastroenterologist; someone who deals with the digestive system and its disorders. And she's here to talk about dysbiosis, gastroparesis, & more disorders caused by an imbalanced microbiome. She's one of the many in the plant-based community who tirelessly raise awareness about the benefits of a whole food, plant-based nutrition. Especially for optimizing gut health.
    Notes from Dr. Angie Sadeghi: Gut health and the gut bacteria play a major role in your overall health. The fastest way to develop disease would be to screw up the gut balance by eating an unhealthy diet and take antibiotics which destroy the gut bacteria. Eating unhealthy causes an imbalance of the gut bacteria, followed by a leaky gut. That is when people start gaining weight, insulin resistance, diabetes, coronary disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome etc... In order to improve your gut health, feed your gut bacteria healthy foods such as green vegetables and other plants 🌱 Eating a high protein diet and ketogenic diet kills the gut bacteria. The gut bacteria feeds on healthy carbs. You may lose weight fast with a ketogenic diet at the beginning, but you will lose your health in the long run. To achieve ultimate health, switch to a whole food plant based diet.

    When it comes to the human wellness experience, Dr. Angie says, “My passion is to provide healing through an integrative approach to keep patients healthy and youthful. Most people spend the latter years of life dealing with chronic disease. My mission is to bring healing and improve the quality of life for those individuals looking to stay fit and healthy, through use of nutrition, fitness, and bio-identical hormone therapy.”
    Dr. Angie’s own personal journey fueled her desire to help patients. In 2014 she switched to whole food a plant-based lifestyle and adopted regular fitness into her life. She had previously suffered from health problems such as severe eczema, elevated cholesterol, fatigue, and was overweight. She started eating a whole food plant-based diet, and transformed her health and body in a short time span. This allowed her to completely restore her health and even compete and place in a fitness competition. “It was crazy to look at myself in the mirror and look like a fitness competitor, rather than a typical overweight physician. For this reason, I decided to share my success method with my patients.”(From: iopbm.com/pages/dr-angie-pers...)

    Great information, but I have yet to find any recommendations by which the gut microbiome can be rebalanced after a course of antibiotics. If I follow a wfpb anyway, does it still happen? Should I do anything extra?

    • @moseslmpg

      I have read recently that instead of using probiotics to replenish the gut microbiome after antibiotics, it is more effective to use/eat prebiotics. Using prebiotics, along with eating foods rich and pre- and probiotics, allows your natural microbiome to rebuild itself better than transplanting exogenous probiotics in ratios that might not match your actual unique microbiome.
      I had heard that probiotics after antibiotics were actually counterproductive, but the site I read that specific explanation on was the Layer Origin blog.

    I had gallbladder surgery 2017. And can't keep any food on my stomach. As soon as i eat something will in 15‐ 20 minutes i have to go to the restroom. I been taking Cholestyramine (Prevalite) and it doesn't seem to be working unless taken it every day. But then I get where I can't go. Any thoughts or ideas.

    • @moseslmpg

      I'm by no means an expert and have no experience with this, but that seems like classic bile acid malabsorption behavior (hence the cholestyramine I presume).
      One suggestion that probably won't work is to have mint or peppermint tea or a few drops of peppermint oil in water with every meal. That's supposed to arrest the gastro-colic reflex by relaxing your GI. But I don't know that it helps with bile acid malabsorption.
      Not that I condone his dietary recommendations, but Dr Berg has a whole bunch of videos on the gallbladder, bile, bile acid diarrhea, and so on, which you may consider checking out. I've found his videos useful for acute, specific ailments where recommendations of "just go WFPB" aren't particularly useful (though they generally are true).
      Maybe a dumb question, but have you tried titrating down your dose of cholestyramine to the point where you don't have diarrhea but also don't have constipation? Bile draws water into the colon IIRC, so you need some to lubricate your GI. Another possibility is taking your cholestyramine as you have been prescribed, and then taking exogenous bile salts, like TUDCA or Jarrow Bile Acid Factors or a digestive enzymes with bile, with every meal. (It may be difficult to find vegan formulation, but they are out there). I suppose you could also try taking bitters instead of bile salts with every meal, but that might not work as well.
      Another consideration, and forgive me for sounding patronizing, is possible malabsorption, if you are have a BM that quickly after eating. I don't know if you've been tested, but personally whenever I have concerns about that due to my GI issues, I make sure to supplement with a semi-elemental shake product to make sure I get some calories and nutrition. I personally like Absorb Plus Vegan, but YMMV. MCT oil is also useful when you cannot absorb or tolerate other fats, because it doesn't rely on bile to be broken down (titrate up very slowly). And of course, a good multivitamin is probably very helpful for people like us who can't guarantee absorption of all the nutrients from a WFPB diet. (I personally like Dr Fuhrman's multivitamin, but again, it's up to you).
      Anyway I hope some of that helps. And of course, run this all by your physician or GI doc, provided they are amenable to this type of discussion (which I know is rare).

    interesting ;) theories ;) but people who eat paleo (meat eggs and veggies) also reverse diabeties, and carnivore etc. theres nothing wrong with meat its the simple sugars, ive eaten paleo nutrarian and reversed my insulin resistance that was leading to diabeties. I am no longer insulin resistant. people who do keto, also reverse diabeties, and they eat fat, though a whole food based diet is generally the best and the safest like nutrarian paleo, mediteranian etc. we also eat some fat though not a ton and do just fine. fat is a neccesary nutrient onley the ADA recomends low fat thats a takeaway from the old system (of low fat high sugar) in reality a moderate healthy fat is fine for the body and needed. a1c of 5.3 6 months ago, and likely lower now soon to have my blood test ;)

    I am 3 weeks into the whole food, plant based lifestyle. I was scared to death but almost immediately, I started to experience all of the positive changes: normal blood pressure, stabilized blood sugar, 7.4 lb weight loss (and we’ll see about my cholesterol at my next doctors appointment)!! However, I still suffer from chronic constipation. I am drinking all the water I can stand, and I’m eating fruits, vegetables, grains and beans exclusively. I have read that fiber supplements should not be used. Should I give it more time?

    • @moseslmpg
      @moseslmpg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what I have heard, adding a lot of fiber at once, especially insoluble fiber (roughage), when one is not accustomed to a high intake, can lead to gut issues like bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.
      It depends on what your individual situation is, but the mantra for introducing fiber is "low and slow", as in start with a low amount and increase it slowly. Fiber supplements like psyllium husk or acacia fiber aren't bad, but depending on your situation, more soluble or insoluble fiber may or may not help.
      I would suggest that you check out Physician's Committee Exam Room Live on TH-cam, specificially episodes with Dr Bulsiewicz or Dr B. They have two videos relevant to your situation, specifically one on conspiration and one on healing the gut. Dr Bulsiwiecz also has a recent book called Fiber Fueled that you may find useful.
      And if you are new to a WFPB diet, I would encourage you to educate yourself to avoid making any rookie mistakes (like not incorporating a B12 supplement). I personally use Dr. Greger's NutritionFacts.org as a resource, but I believe PCRM has some accessible stuff for those just starting out.

    • @moseslmpg
      @moseslmpg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry, I meant to also give you some examples of specific "remedies" for constipation from the Exam Room Live Dr B videos and their comments.
      Kiwis, plums, apples, pineapple, okra, pea soup, prune juice, oats, barley, psyllium husk, flaxseed or flax oil, chia seed, magnesium oxide.
      These all work in different ways, depending on the cause of your constipation. But generally people recommend increasing mucilage, increasing soluble fiber, temporarily decreasing insoluble fiber, and using foods/supplements that draw water into the colon. But again, I recommend watching the Dr B Exam Room Live videos before making any changes, and never make any drastic changes when it comes to gut health.
      Good luck

      @@moseslmpg thanks! I’m not super new to veggies, though it has been years since I have allowed myself to eat fruit (thanks to T2D). I’m pretty well educated regarding traditional nutrition (still in the process of trashing all those books, lol) but I wasn’t sure if maybe I was missing something. I have been voraciously consuming all of the TH-cam videos and podcasts on WFPB nutrition, so I appreciate the tip. I will definitely check out both Dr. B’s videos about fiber! Thank you again for responding!!
