I consumed 250 to 350 g carb per day with low fat, low sat fat, moderate protein. Lots of whole foods but some Cheerios, bread, crunchy snacks. Felt horrible and was gaining weight. Went low carb, higher healthy fat, clean protein, lost aches, lost weight, got off blood pressure meds. It’s clear to me that there are different paths for different people. What is working for you doesn’t make sense but I’m glad you are thriving.

Well.I am type 2 diabetic I was on keto for almost 6 months but as soon I ate some carbs my blood gulucose spiked so basically it didn't cure anything it just masked and showed some good results for short term.what I am looking for is increased insulin sensitivity not just bringing it down temporarily by eating low or not carbs.i am giving a low fat diet a shot now its day 5.today fasting glucose was 5.9 even though I carbs all day yesterday to be specific rice ,chickpeas and some pinto beans, salads.want to see how it works out in long term.one thing for sure its much easier to follow and extremely cheap compared to keto.e.g bought 3kg chickpeas dried for only £6 from amazon.should last for month at least .where on keto used to spend that much on just one meal.its good because rest of money can spend on healthy greens and fruits.

First I want to say I am in my second year of living with type 2 diabetes after ending up in ICU in a coma for a week with my blood sugar at 1500 when admitted. I took 10 units Levemir insulin (twice a day), 1000mg Metfomin (twice a day), 5mg Glipizide (twice a day) and ate absolutely no sugars, no grains and no starches during this last year and was totally unable to get my blood sugar in control. On a daily basis my blood glucose would swing anywhere from 130 to 500. My Dr. called me a brittle diabetic - never quite understood his meaning. I found this on TH-cam and decided to give it a try. I started on just trying it one day a week - what my wife calls it, "meatless Monday's" but also dis-allowing other foods high in saturated fats like cheeses, fried foods as well as my normal above diet. Within my 1st month my swings started getting much less extreme. On the second month we included Tuesday's and so on. I am now at the end of my 3rd month and Monday thru Wednesday eating nothing but whole foods on those days with absolutely no meats, saturated fats, etc. Conclusion my 30 day blood glucose average is now 140 - lowest ever average for me. I snack on fruit like it is going out of style - I even ate a small bowl of watermelon last night after dinner and my next morning glucose reading was 128. I want to thank you guys so much for sharing this video - it has really brought hope to me and yes I am going to continue adding another day of eating plant based meals and snacks each and every month - thanks again

And you are eating fruit and grains ? How are you doing now ? I am eating the same way you were instructed to. Two boiled eggs for breakfast. No bread, for fruit just berries, meat that is known for fat... Ribeye Steak, Smoked Ribs ( with a dry hot pepper rub, nothing sweet ), grilled salmon, grilled tuna.

That was an excellent visual model of how insulin works in the cells! I have known for awhile that there was a problem with the insulin getting glucose into the cells, but I never learned (or was taught by any doctor/nurse/medical professional) that the REASON the insulin receptors won't allow the insulin to let the glucose in (insulin resistance) is because of too much FAT in the cells! Thank you SO MUCH! On 9/14/2020 you taught me one of the most valuable lessons about insulin ever!! From a scientific standpoint, it just makes SENSE not to eat too much fat (instead of people saying "don't eat this, don't eat that"). Amazing! Thank you so much!!!

    • @kimswanger7903
      @kimswanger7903 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

See what I've been taught is that insulin resistance occurs because there's too much glucose to be absorbed by the cells so the receptors close.....not too much fat.

Hi Cyrus. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes as at 5 May 22 and as of that date I made a commitment to try, as best as I could, to get back to normal. I searched the internet and you tube and was somewhat disappointed with what I found. That is, until I came across this site. And because of my background I loved the evidenced based approach. Let me provide you with my lab numbers just to demonstrate my journey with some hard evidence. As at 5 May 22, my pathology readings were as follows: Fast Glucose 12.0 (mmol/L) ; Trig/HDL 0.74; Chol/ HDL 4.4; and HbA1c 11.1. I followed your approach rigorously including at least 1 hour walking per day. Twelve months later, as at 18 April 23, there was an amazing transformation as shown: Fast Glucose 5.2 (mmol/L), Trig/HGL 0.5; Chol / HDL 3.3, and HbA1c 5.5. My doctor was amazed and in his words "Just Astonishing". Let my add some added drama to the exercise. As at 5 May 22, that dreaded complication arose, my doctor said that I was at Stage 2 CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) and he told me there was no cure and it would be downhill as of that date with only three outcomes: , manage the decline (which was inevitable), dialysis and death. At 70 years of age I was not fearful of death but I was not happy in relation to the quality of life. Here are the relevant pathology numbers related to my CKD, as at 5 May 22: eGFR 75, R-U-Creatinine 7.6 (mmol/L) , R-U-Albumin 35, (mg/L) and Alb / Creat Ratio 4.6 (mg/mmol) . It was all gloom and doom. Twelve months later, again an amazing transformation: eGFR 93, R-U-Creatinine 5.8: R-U-Albumin 10: Alb / Creat ratio 1.7 (mg/mmol). My doctor was amazed at the significant change and my kidneys were functioning in the normal range. As shown above there was nothing anecdotal in my testimony and it was all evidenced based. I hate to use capital letters but the turn around was truly ASTOUNDING. I decided to give myself a treat and had a nice coffee with a blueberry muffin! Oh the sweet pleasure of life, so many treasures abound, some lost and new ones found, and all accepted with small thankful gratitudes. Cyrus thank you very much for some really useful and evidenced based material. I hope others also benefit from your material.

600 g carb per day? My blood pressure would be in the stroke category. I got off my hypertension med of 10 years by dropping carbs below 50g per day. To each his own but I cannot do more than 100g without joint pain. I used to eat 240 to 300 g carb per day and was gaining weight and feeling awful. I spent 8 years trying to reverse my diabetes on low carb high fat. In the end, my insulin resistance became so bad no amount of insulin would get my blood sugar down to anywhere near normal. It was very frightening. I realised increasing the insulin was not the answer. Low carb had only ever ‘managed’ the diabetes by keeping the sugar intake to a minimum. I knew I needed to do something radical. Within 6 weeks on high carb low fat I had to drop my insulin requirement to less than half (50+ units to 20-25 units per day). In just 2 months I have lost a stone in weight. My energy levels, which have always been very low, are slowly starting to improve. I am excited to see what happens over time......

I did a ketogenic diet for 2 years (No cheating whatsoever, no more than 25 grams of carbs a day) because I had a horrible case of reactive hypoglycemia / post-prandial syndrome (From insulin resistance). It worked in the beginning but by the end of the 2 year mark it made my insulin resistance and hypoglycemia out of control...I would literally take one bite of meat and be full blown hypo within a 30 seconds.
As a last resort I tried a high-carb low-fat plant based diet like Cyrus is showing here (I had to stick to just fruits and veggies at first though because starches would make me hypo) and I was having no more hypos after 4 days, that was 10 months ago and my reactive hypoglycemia is completely gone.
I'm also becoming more insulin sensitive from this diet because now I can eat potatoes and I'm totally fine, no adrenaline release at all. If you're trying to decide weather to go keto or high-carb low-fat plant based because you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, or just for health in general, take it from someone who's been on both sides of the fence...The high-carb low-fat plant based diet is what works!
The dirty little secret that the low-carb keto "experts" won't tell you is that low-carb diets actually increase insulin resistance over time because your adrenaline is higher than your insulin, and you body becomes physiologically insulin resistant as a defense mechanism. I had to learn the hard way, but thanks to Dr. Morse and Cyrus and Robbie I have my life back.

So just like taking Metformin & Glyburide for 20 years or so, the Keto diet would also make the condition worse in the end.

I will try again to get back to plant-based eating, but I will need to find a new doctor. This is very informative and should be looked at further to better help those with Diabetes.

After following an ADA diet for years with no appreciable change and after seeing "Forks Over knives", I tried out the diet you guys also recommend, and that was the fix! I had been getting calls and emails from ADA for years asking for donations to help cure diabetes, so I had to post my success with this way of eating to the ADA forum! I expected some serious skepticism, but instead what I got was attacked and called all kinds of ugly names by far too many replies! It was so far overboard it made me wonder if there was a force in place with a protected agenda...after all, who would "donate" to the cure if there actually already was a cure! After seeing the interview with the ADA official in "What the Health", it pretty much clinched my suspicions. It really opened my eyes to all these supposed "health" agencies who are sponsored by the processed, fast food, meat and dairy industries! Revolting that it goes on unabated and most people are not ever aware of it! Thanks for all you do, you are true heroes!

    Man I'm so confused now...
I'm not diabetic but I've been doing a ton of research on the best diet for weight loss, fitness and longevity. There are so many studies that contradict each other.
Last year I followed Dr. Eric Berg's "healthy keto" and it worked well. I lost weight and had more energy. But I didn't end up sticking with the diet and gained the weight back. I was getting ready to start the keto diet again and then I came across this video.
I've always known a diet based primarily on vegetables and fruit is better. But I've always had a hard time subscribing to the idea that meats and fats are bad.

There's a lot to take in here. I was diagnosed with type 2 two years ago with an A1C of 8.3. I was stunned and angry at myself. I am a medical professional so I was familiar with some of things that I needed to do. In researching I found that there were some so called remedies that were wide ranged. I decided to not go on meds and to restrict myself immediately. After one week my morning glucose was between 95-113. This was with an extremely low amount of carbs. Over time that did improve and I started to walk more and bike some. Long story short my A1C dropped to 5.9 with eating low carbs. One thing that I found that I just can't seem to grasp is when I did eat carbs again initially I would always lose weight. I'd check my sugar and it hovered around 95-108. I kept saying to myself something is going on that I don't understand. One site will tell you very low carbs, another you can eat high carbs. One will say restrict carbs and it'll reverse IS and another will say it's simply the fat. I am someone that has a great deal of will power when it comes to attempting to heal myself through diet. When I restricted carbs for at least a year honestly yes I could tell that my sensitivity had improved, but not to the point where I felt I could eat what I wanted and see it go back to normal in 2 hours or so so I thought does anyone know what they're talking about? When I listened to this video honestly it's definitely with skepticism because I'm not easily convinced. Honestly I also wanted this to be true because I love fruit and have not eaten much for years now. I hear professionals say too much animal fat is bad and that one there has been my problem. I don't eat red meat or pork, but I do eat more than my share of meat. I'm seeing opposing views in the comment section here naturally, but what I need to see is what happened when they started to eat carbs. What was their morning glucose like and what was their glucoses after high carb meals? It's showing that it improves, but not showing what to expect in the interim. This need to be accompanied by how long it took to come down and what to expect along the way.

As a Type 1 diabetic I can testify that he is absolutely correct. Fat causes insulin resistance. Any diabetic should eat a low fat, high carb, whole food, plant based diet.
I did a low carb higher fat diet for years and I did have stable blood sugar. But anytime I ate any form of carbohydrate my blood sugar was uncontrollable. NOW I eat tons of fruit, potatoes, whole grains, beans and veggies. My blood sugar is stable, predictable and in a normal range. I have incredible energy and feel amazing.
If you have diabetes do yourself a favor and eat a whole food, plant based, low fat diet. Your body will thank you.

I met Dr. Cyrus Khambatta at a wedding years ago. At that time I was on a high-fat paleo diet doing lots of butter/coconut oil coffee and such, and thought I was eating an “optimal” diet from every book I’d read. I didn’t feel great, but I figured I just hadn’t been doing it long enough. When we started talking at the wedding, I asked Cyrus what he did. He explained how he was using nutrition to help diabetics have massive improvements in their health. “Oh, so you’re probably feeding them low carb?” I say. “Nope. Lots of fruit. Basically no fat” he replies confidently. I was trying to be polite, so I said something like, “uhh, ok, nice to meet you.” Thinking in my head, this guy is nuts and clearly misinformed. But being a geek for nutrition and biology, I talk to him more at the wedding reception, and he explained exactly how he repeated experiments during his PhD at Berkeley over and over and over again that showed that the very low fat test groups were the healthiest. I walked away from that wedding eating tons of fruit and roughly following the 80/10/10 diet (which he recommended), and have never before touched the degree of health I’ve had since meeting him. I was never diabetic, but since talking to him I’ve gone off of antidepressants and thyroid medication. This way if eating doesn’t just help insulin resistance, eating very low fat raw fruits and vegetables seems to be able to improve or cure almost any health challenge or disease. Since then I’ve also found the Medical Medium books, which echoed exactly the same things Cyrus found in his research. My health and energy are shockingly good, and getting even better daily.

My liver enzymes, showing a progressive fatty liver condition after eating Keto for 4 years, were getting to high. I found this site because 16 years ago followed 'The Mucousless Diet Healing System' and felt so wonderful on this diet I wanted to get back to that energy and started researching. So in January I started the whole food plant based approach. Didn't eliminate all the oil I should have until about 4 months ago. At 73 I have no problem with energy (I can work a 12hr day with no ill effects) and my total cholesterol dropped from 256 to 150. My ALT and AST dropped from 33 to 29 and 26 respectfully ... so I am on my way. I have a wonderful appetite, eat what I want from the plant kingdom and dropped 10 more pounds this past summer. I didn't need to lose weight, it just came off. Depression gone, energy way up, attitude wonderful and I love eating all the foods I restricted myself from for so many years. Do the labs ... know what your body does with what you are eating.

@@margiemistretta8885 , I have watched videos from several different experts who use different approaches for T2D, all with demonstrable results. I think Dr. Fung's fasting method makes a lot of sense for helping to reverse insulin resistance but I also agree with the plant-based diet because, as this video illustrates, the main cause of insulin resistance is too much fat in the cells. Low carb diets work in the short term because you're lowering your glucose and insulin production but that doesn't solve the root problem. Not to mention the health issues associated with high saturated fats and animal products. IMO, the goal is to get insulin to do it's job so your body can process carbs and sugar normally.

Like you, they admitted me and I was diagnosed with diabetes. I am 21 years old, a junior in college, 12 hours from home, and I was aboslutley terrified. Three weeks of low carb and my BS was still hanging around 300. I watched What The Health the other night and decided to go vegan. I'm four days in and I have honestly never felt better and I hope this feeling never goes away. I don't eat that many carbs. Around 200-250, but my blood sugar has been between 115-140, and it hasn't really been below 200 in the past month. I love this. It realy works. This information is CRUCIAL to the diabetes world.

I reversed my type 2 diabetes with this diet! (a vegan whole-food-based diet)
I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 18, now I am 27 years old.
I found this video 4 months ago and also the book by Dr.Neal Barnard, and it had helped me a lot.
I have tried many kinds of diets and when I turned to a whole food vegan diet, I found that in 2 months my blood glucose was well within range and I could eat a lot more unprocessed carbs and fruits without a spike in my sugar levels.
I found that fruits did spike my sugar level but not to extremes when I ate just fruit, but while eating fruits with other vegetables like cucumber and tomatoes it did not have much impact on my sugar levels.
Before I was on Metformin but now I am completely off from all my meds, and my HBA1C is 5.7, HDL and LDL levels are normal but my Iron, Vitamin B12 and vitamin d levels are little low, So I have taken an appointment with a nutritionist for next week, hopefully, I can find a resolution for this.
Very important before going on this diet for diabetics :
Please contact your doctor and consult a nutritionist.
It is very easy to find videos on this diet from influencers who might give wrong advise unknowingly, I have seen many influencers go on a vegan diet do it wrongly and facing the consequences.
Your blood glucose will drastically reduce when on this diet, so if you are on insulin or other meds you will face hypoglycemia(life-threateningly low sugar level), At the beginning of this diet I did the stupid mistake of not telling my doctor and I faced this problem after which she did an HBA1C test and adjusted my meds eventually taking them off.

There are many pathologies to disease. Pushing a low fat plant based diet is the same as pushing a low carb... teach people how to listen to their bodies, to find balance, to listen to the whispers of inflammation, to analyze their digestion’s, teach people how to use a 20$ glucometer for goodness sake instead of pushing a one sided way of eating. Look at all the ex-vegetarians and ex-vegans.... clearly you can also promote inflammation on a WFPB diet. THINK people stop listening to a one size fits all anything !!

These two young men need to take insulin to survive for the rest of their lives. One of them has his PhD in Molecular Biochemistry. This isn't a fad or scam for them. It's a life or death scenario. I would at least listen to what they have found what works for them before dismissing it out of hand as some comments below have. It might save your life or the life of a loved one.
Just eat REAL FOOD, people. Food that our great-grandparents would recognize as food. Food as grown, in its natural form. Fruits, vegetables, legumes (beans), whole grains, nuts and seeds. Oatmeal, brown rice, barley, quinoa, beans - white, black, pinto, kidney, garbanzo, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, potatoes, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, peas, almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, etc, etc. Nothing in a box with questionable or unrecognizable ingredients or any kind of fast food. Just cook simply; boil, steam, bake, or eat a lot raw. A green salad a day. A serving of beans. Some fruit. Eat enough to be satisfied. Find some good condiments to put on your food to make it tasty. Avoid artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose. Find some sort of exercise that you like, even walking and do it regularly. The answer is so simple it's criminal. We humans no longer know how to eat for our species. Our taste buds have been exploited by the fast food industry for pure profit. We eat fake food full of sugar, salt, oil and preservatives and it's killing us.

My current A1C is 5.0% More importantly, my kidneys are doing well, my blood pressure and cholesterol is perfect, all of my neuropathy has gone away, I have tons of energy, my blood sugar levels are very predictable, and I have maximized my insulin sensitivity. This flies in the face of a ton of research I’ve done and studies I’ve seen. I agree with him about the study being flawed. But I think he uses that to his benefit. I’d like to see a true Keto diet vs plant based diet and what results show. I’m type 2 and I’m not exactly following keto, but drastically reducing carbs and eliminating sugar for the most part, paired with intermittent fasting, has changed so much for me. In 3 months, I’m 40lb down, blood glucose went from 250’s to 100-120. I realize I have more progress to make, but in several months it’s a huge amount of progress. Learn everything you can about insulin. Get multiple sources. Because there’s definitely science that disagrees with what this guy says. Hoping for the best for everyone!!!

I have to be honest... eating high amounts of protein like red meat, bacon, eggs and avocado, on an instinctual level does not feel right or sit right with me. I wonder if others feel the same? I have started doing what you do - reduce sugar, reduce carbs & only eat twice a day in a 7 to 8 hour window, so basically intermittent fasting. It can only be a good start i figure. However, how can the information presented in this video, (which makes so much sense), be so radically opposite to what others like Dr Fung says? Im confused. Wishing everyone best of health!!

Thanks for that really clear explanation if why fat is the cause of insulin resistance. Penny dropping moment for me. It makes several things drop into place actually.
When younger i could run all day with no food, accessing my stored fat and feeling good. 30 years later I know I'm insulin resistant and when out running, after around an hour I crawl to a halt. I can't access my fat stores as far as I can tell. To keep moving I have to eat carbs. The stupid thing is that my body is fat...belly fat is my nemesis. How ever little I eat I can't access this fat easily. I just don't lose weight even running 50 miles a week. I know my blood sugars are higher than I would lie and sure that there was a connection. Fasting bs be have been at 110 to 130 for years and years. I tried keto and Paleo and things just got worse after a couple of months of initial success. Gradually climbing to where I'm serously worried about my health. I found Dr Gregor and have been following a vegan WFPB for about three months but wandered a bit as I didn't really understand the fat issue.
Last night I made my self a meal of rice, mango, sweet potato, chickpeas. Stuck some chutney on top for flavour. Bingo... fasting BS this morning is 105.
I finally understand why a small handful of nuts or nut butter sky rockets my BS even though they are healthy.
Thank you, I now know I can do this.

Extremely informative...great presentation. My question would be this.. would the process of ketosis, which I believe is the body’s burning of excess fat for energy accomplish a similar end, in that the lipid cells would be burned, thus improving insulin sensitivity?

    • @MrTalithan
      @MrTalithan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes: Keto is another way to increase insulin sensitivity, since Ketosis only occurs when the body is largely deprived of carbs to turn into glucose, which means that while in ketosis you're not using insulin, like at all.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 10. That was 23 years ago. Previously, nobody in my family had diabetes of any type, but after i fell ill, my sister's younger son was also diagnosed with it 2 years later. 3 years ago, her older son got ill as well and he was 24 years old, when he got type 1 diabetes. Now, the reason why I brought it up were the events that occurred right before each of us got sick. I had a riding accident, my sister's younger son was hit by a car and her older son had a motorcycle accident. Roughly 2-3 weeks after these events took place, we all started to show the symptoms: thirst, stomach pain, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, headaches. My mother thought it was stomach flu at first, but when results came in I was hospitalized right away. When my sister's younger and older sons started showing the symptoms, we already knew to be suspicious. So it got me thinking, if the stress from these events (possible adrenaline rush) could have triggered the diabetes? While I was in hospital I had met 2 more patients (girls) who also had developed type 1 diabetes and they also had scary events happening right prior ( a dog attack and nasty fall from a tree). I guess I was wondering if You had any scary, stressful events happening prior your endocrine systems going haywire?

    • @sherill3369
      @sherill3369 6 ปีที่แล้ว

If you are in an accident, a fire , etc, or some other extremely stressful situation that causes your adrenaline to get out of control, sometimes the hospital will administer steroids. (Like Prednisone, etc) and based on my experience I believe the steroids can damage your pancreas resulting in the need to administer insulin with possibility of diabetes as a consequence.

    🙏 I have been a t1 since 2000 (i was 9).
Growing up, I was ALWAYS told "eat low carb, high fat. Avoid carbs to avoid insulin resistance." I also suffer from hypothyroidism and sarcoidosis....i gained a shit load of weight. My sugars were anywhere from 35 to 600 on any given week. I had gained 30 lbs too much weight at 16 years old. My a1c was 13.6. My eyesight deteriorated within one year.
The healthiest I ever was was in 2017. I immediately began a fully plant-based diet. Within 2 months, my a1c dropped 2.5 points. My sugar was consistently between 80-120. I lost 25 lbs. My energy level was off the charts. I was constantly happy.
I ended up in the hospital in December of 2017 due to sarcoidosis... During that time, I stopped eating plant based. Since then, I have become extremely lazy (the heaviest I have been since being pregnant), my a1c has gone back up... My sugars are inconsistent. I tried keto (as everyone says a diabetic should). It made me feel absolutely horrendous.
I have mentioned to my husband several times that I want to go back to eating plant based, and he always thought I was crazy until hearing this...
I will definitely be going back to a fully plant-based diet. 🙏🙏🙏

@@allnaturalindigo4893 it was a combo of being in the hospital and having zero vegan options (along with t1d friendly) and in addition, for some reason I thought that my sarcoidosis was caused by eating fully plant based.
I actually just went back to plant based after watching this a few days ago and already feel a difference. My sugars have been riding between 80-160. My body is detoxing itself (I just have to constantly poop lol)
But overall, I think the emotional impact eating plant based has on me is the best.

Could you please cite the research you referred to that shows adding protein to meals increases the glucose response?
The conventional advice is that eating protein/fat before/with carbs slows the glucose response? Thank you!

Hi guys, I love all your videos, you have inspired me to become a HCLF vegan! I'm a type 1 and have been since I was 4 years old, I'm currently 17 years old about about to go into college this fall. After watching all your videos I've just become so inspired and I feel like after a road full of ups and downs that I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel. My HBA1c is currently sitting around 7.3, but I'm hoping to get it down to 6.7. I've upped my carb intake from 130 to 300-400g a day!! That number is crazy for me! I have noticed that after I give my insulin I begin to fall low, so I up my carb ratios. I still have the odd high number, 10.3-12.1. Im just really curious to know, when you first transitioned to a vegan diet, particularly HCLF, how long did it take for you to up your carb ratios and for your blood levels to equalise? I have a constant fear of falling too low so I don't give too much insulin, and in result I fall a little high! Thanks so much guys! So inspiring!

I am on Keto for one year and my blood glucose and lipids are as you described in your presentation (all improved), I will stay as long as this works for me. In fact I am not against low fat or vegans but it just dont work for me so far. Could it be that we have several type of humans which can take better low fat diets and others who get along better with low carb diets?

I think that if you have a lot of fat floating around your system and you go straight to low fat high carb diet, then the body won't burn off that fat very quickly. It will remain in the system and so although you're not adding extra fat to the system, it takes a while for that fat to be used up. It will be used up faster that when you're combining fat with carbs (because insulin will be lower), but it will still be relatively slow because by eating any carbs you will have insulin in the system (which slows down fat burning).
Having said that, a low carb high fat diet allows the body to utilise fats very easily. But aren't you just adding more fat with this method? Yes, but if your calorie intake is lower (because fat is so satiating) then the body will burn off the excess fat floating around in your system (because it's used to burning fat for fuel now because of a lack of insulin).
So it is just one strategy, but I think it is an option to go low carb high fat for a while until the fat in your body is being burned off, and then switch to a high carb low fat diet which you'll be ready for it because there won't be as much fat in the system to stop carbs being utilised.
I know it sounds a bit odd to say you'll have less fat in your system on a high fat diet, but it makes sense to me at least. A high fat diet in a calorie deficit will allow excess fat to be burned for energy. Once excess fat has been used up, a low fat diet can be brought in as those carbs can be utilised.
I appreciate both sides of these arguments, but ultimately I do think that we are supposed to eat carb foods because of all the nutritional value. I just think that a low carb (even ideally a carnivore) approach, can get us to that place where we can eat carbs again without ill effects. Of course many people just want to be one way or the other and become dogmatic about things. Listen and learn and then use a strategy that works for you. Thanks.

Low-fat and high-carb works, but low-carb high-fat also works also (and I'd argue slightly better even!). Just be sure to not eat high-carb and high fat at the same time. For better understanding read about the Randle cycle.

i am insulin resistant. I've been a vegetarian for 40+ years so I eat cheese. I have given up all refined sugar and flour. I am very familiar with the "blue zone" and their eating habits which is basically your approach. I was watching some videos from a man who eats different things and then looks at his blood sugar a couple of hours later. In one of his tests he eats a grilled cheese made with ezekiel bread. It did not cause a spike in his blood sugar. He says you can mitigate a blood sugar spike by adding protein. He tested bananas, green, ripe and overripe. The over ripe caused the biggest spike but when he added peanut butter, the spike was reasonable. Can you explain this to me? My local doc, who is plant based, told me not to eat more than 1/4 avacodo but when avacodo was tested, no spike. If you are not experiencing a spike, wouldn't that mean the sugar in your blood has remained stable?

I’m totally confused. So we have Dr Eric Berg and Dr Jason Fung saying Fasting Kito diet and keeping carb low as possible keeps insulin under control and improves insulin sensitivity and now you have these two diabetic guys tell you keto is bad and high fat is bad (healthy fats). So what is it?

I think there are 2 ways that work - keto is burning fat for fuel & there is a heck of a lot of evidence that it is a natural capacity of human body. But eating vegan, whole foods, whether raw/fruitarian or cooked whole foods - no refined foods (either diet, refined carbs are bad, bad - they are fundamentally sugar without fiber) works also. Human body adapted to either mode & can change as required - perhaps because of seasons & what is available. The fat thing is troubling to me - (vegan) keto works for me, burning fat as fuel. Eating whole foods - raw or cooked combo, fruit, etc also works. But I am suspicious that low fat is not optimal. Obviously some people do great on it, but I’ve met enough people who do not that I am cautious. Dr. Michael Greger now saying that, say, salads without fat are shown to mean almost no absorbency of nutrients - salad with fats/oils make absorbency of nutrients skyrocket. And we all know there are certain nutrients are fat soluble.

Low carb or keto DOES control blood sugar and A1C, as he mentions when he says low carb diets do work. However, this approach fundamentally addresses the symptoms, i.e. the problem of glucose that is “stuck” outside your cells in the blood, because you have for the most part stopped sending sugar into the blood in the first place through diet. However, what he is saying is that if you address the insulin resistance itself by cutting fat, your body will be able to handle healthy carbs on its own (he isn’t talking about processed or junk foods obviously). The main concerns he and others mention about low carb, high fat high protein diets are that diets high in saturated fat tend to drive high blood cholesterol and heart disease risk, and high protein diets tend to drive up growth hormones such as IGF-1 that increase he risk of some types of cancer.

I was skeptical before this. I have PCOS and insulin resistance. I will certainly be giving this plant based lifestyle a go - especially if it means getting off metformin - it's horrific. Thanks :)

My doctor said "lets wait 60 days and see what happens, and if it isn't better we'll talk about something like Meformin". So I went to the internet - All kinds of information as much bad as good !???
This video explained Type 2 perfectly well - now I know what going on and how to deal with it. Thanks Very Much !!!!

The distinction between pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes is completely artificial. Both conditions mean that there is too much insulin circulating your body due to insulin resistance. Only "upside" of pre-diabetes is that your pancreas is still able to produce the extra insulin required to keep your blood glucose levels in range, but it can do so only for so long.
