Classic boat Riva super aquarama (1969)

Restoration of varnish of Boat Riva Super aquarama in Palma de Mallorca. A VERY LOW BUDGET was allowed to this refit by the owner, so carpentry and joinery repairs could not be done to many areas that we found the wood was rotten, so west system filler was our only option at that moment.

A huge efforts on a tight budget from the owner - the outcome looks ok, but just on the surface. The use of inadequate materials, ie expoxy putty etc., will create a major headache during the next resto, and / or for the next owner. While I fully do understand the good intent & motivation behing their move I would have advised the owners to wait, accumulate more funds, and then for the critical parts of the work get in some professional support, this better preserving the boat for the future.
BUT (and the is a reason why this is a capital 'but'): even 1st class yards like Riva World in my view fail, as they do not preserve the aged beauty of the patina of these beauties, but sand, varnish, polish & gloss up the boats like new. Esp. the 'owner's project boat' has such a lovely and in the antique furniture world highly sought after honey-golden hue to the mahogany that - again in my personal view - it borders on criminal to sand this away. Also, my understanding is that these boats were varnished (of course in 1st class quality), so again fully glossing the hull w. 'liquid plastic' is very debatable, as is the rechroming of all the metal work. Admittedly these boats are works of art, but they still were meant to be used and to age over time (which they do very gracefully). The trick is to conduct a "sympathetic" restoration that retains patina and aged look, at the same time being a refresher for the boat. Very difficult to do, but achievable - most vintage Rivas today are over-restored and have lost their age-related patina.

Ich weiss gar nicht mehr, was ich sagen soll: Selbst die ausgeblichenen Holzoberflächen sind nicht tief genug abgeschliffen, was man am Übergang unter dem Scheibenrahmen gut erkennen kann, obwohl mehr als genug Material vorhanden ist. Dass man Klarlackierungen mittels Richtschleiflatten planiert, hat sich offensichtlich auch noch nicht verbreitet.

Der Vergleich sei einmal gestattet mit der Arbeit von Riva World im oberen Link ab Minute 1:43. Hier sieht man, wie ein Mahagoni-Heck wie in Lack gegossen auszusehen hat. Alles andere ist schlicht und ergreifend Schändung.

I have to say i agree - very basic fix up job. Repairing the rot with filler and then very poor stain which is far from the original spec

They destroyed / overrestored all the patina - it takes decades for mahogany to get this lovely lemony tone. All gone, what a shame. Good intentions, but no respect and understanding of a period restoration. I'd guess the value of the boat got halved by this exercise.
