When it comes to Speed boosters for BMPCC 4k is the Metabones really $400 better than the VILTROX?

@@gsanchez922 i can't say it is a noticable issue. The only thing which i can say is a bit of a trouble is a slight blur on the corners of the shot at a lens wide open. It is noticable only on still shots made on my Lumix gh4. Video picture is of no trouble. Don't have experience enough to tell whether it is a viltrox caused issue, or a peculiarity of some other sort, but the advantages of using this booster (a wider shot, additional stop, and a possibility to use a razor sharp sigma 18-35) are stronger, than any possible misperfections. The result is amazing, and that's enough for me)

Thanks for the good content brother but I respectfully disagree! I've used both and not only is the Viltrox softer but the doesn't handle backlight(flaring) all that well, and doesn't maintain the highlights nearly as well either. Starting off it isn't bad but I recommend stepping up to the Metabones or just actually getting the 6K and avoiding the adapters all together!

  • @AllThingsFilm1

I've had the Viltrox for a while now. I still haven't picked up an EF lens, yet, to try it out. Thanks for your experience. I think the Viltrox is a valid choice. When it comes to criticism, the social media section of independent film making tends to be overly critical these days. I think many people are attached to specific brands and mindsets. Sure, in most cases, you get what you pay for. But, not in all cases.

  • @baldwinvp

I have the Viltrox too and I despiiiise that milky crap. That being said, I bought it simply to have the option to use EF glass with a wider FOV. This does the trick and I just don’t go lower than the original F/stop. Problem solved! I prefer using the native Meike cine primes anyways, so the Viltrox is there more to fill a focal length void when needed.

  • @trevorpinnocky

There's no free lunch when it comes to optics. That's the only issue I've ever had with Viltrox. I've owned a Viltrox adapter for Sony for 5+ years. It's an 'Ok' adapter with 'OK' build. That's what you get for your money, an 'OK' adapter. It's not a Metabones killer or the equal of the Metabones. The image is soft and hazy wide open from the ones I've seen and from the one I own.
So for my money, it doesn't make sense to put compromising optics on a camera the quality of the pocket 4k. I can find other places to save money, but I draw the line at lenses and adapters.
And your image is OK for TH-cam, but would I deliver it to a paying customer? I don't know, probably not. You gotta make that choice yourself.
The other thing is Metabones hold value and you can either keep it and use it with every m43 camera you buy or sell it, for very near what you paid for it. Trying reselling the Viltrox anywhere near retail. ;)

I totally agree with your assessment, the Metabones is waaaayyyy over priced for only slightly better image quality (Law of diminishing returns). I'm using 3 of these with a GH5S and 2 BMPC4Ks. The version 2 model of the Viltrox sells for an average price of S135.00 on Ebay all day long. I have version 1 which cost me $235.00 on Amazon. I recently bought 2 of these on Ebay... $122.00 for the first, then $118.00 for the second on sale. Viltrox is also pretty consistent with updates to the firmware. (Vers. 3.3 currently). These also work really well on photo cameras too(GX8).

I haven't watched the vid yet, it's more of a reply to the title. Viltrox is and will be always compared to the Metabones which has better edge to edge sharpness. And that's cool! But, the Viltrox has an undeniable characteristic that mimics the softness and imperfections of an anamorphic shooting setup, just minus the stretched rays of light and particles. At 4K images can seem really processed and super digital. Viltrox has a nice organic look. But it's a creative choice like choosing Cooke lenses over Zeiss for the softness and warmness off the bat. Each element is a tool for storytelling. Wide open, the vilrox EF-M2 is a character all her own. Definitely usable, especially if it fits the narrative. Thanks for uploading. As always, I appreciate content that promotes conversation. I hope to work with you one day.

I decided to pick up another one (ebay, brand new at $108). This time it was the version 2, and so far so good! No problems. I'd still recommend the Viltrox for those on a budget. Now maybe if the bmpcc4k produced video that was as sharp as a razor I could make the sacrifice but this is definitely not the case, the bmpcc4k is overly soft even with the most optically primed glass so this is what swayed me to put up the cash for the mb. Also, don't forget that the mb speedbooster holds it's resale value very well so in the long run it's an investment when you later decide to change camera systems.

  • @tomdchi12
    @tomdchi12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm looking forward to that comparison with the "made for BMPCC4k" Metabones. Will it make any visible difference? One thing to throw out there is that Viltrox makes a no-glass adapter for EF (and unmodified EF-S1) to MFT adapter and it's closer to US$100. You don't get the 0.71 field of view adjustment or the light-concentration to up the effective f stop, but there is zero optical degradation. That 16mm lens would be like a 30mm (35mm full frame equivalent) instead of about a 22mm with the 0.71 speedbooster adjustment, so it goes from "very wide" to "a little wide" but that's still a very useful focal length. For serious budget shooting, I can recommend the EF-S 18-55 with in-lens IS (about $60 used) on the no-glass Viltrox. The big negative is that you are nowhere near f1.4 for low light, and not much shallow depth of field, but to get going and shooting, it's a solid option. Then add a "with glass speedbooster" (either Viltrox or Metabones) later.

I managed to get a used Viltrox EF-M2 for £65 from CeX here in the UK. I'm fully aware the metabones is a lot better in terms of performance wide open, but can't justify the eightfold increase in price. It's a way to use the 18-35 I already own with the Pana G7 I picked up on the cheap and eventually with the BMPCC4k until I can pick up some native lenses to use for video.

I use Viltrox m2 and Aputure Regain (that uses the same optic as metabones), and yes there is difference between those adapters. Viltrox have bigger "self illumination" of white details on image, and it could be reduced by adjusting inner optical element - slightly moving it closer to sensor. About mount to bmpcc4k. Viltrox fit just perfect without any free play (in my case) I read reviews where Viltrox have some infinity focus issue, but I cant reproduce this with different position of inner element, may be this issue appears with auto focus.. I don't know.

The "hard to focus" thing is just it being very unsharp. And the Metabones BMPCC XL adapter is the best out of them all. I have the older Viltrox booster (no electronics MF only) for $99.. out of the box had to check back optic and tighten set screw. Basically 95% as sharp as straight (no optic) adapter. What it gives me on my BMPCC4K is a DX sensor size (1.5x crop) on my custom BMPCC4K MFT sensor (1.9x crop). Do I wish there was an adapter that got me a 1.1x or 1.0 crop? Hell yeah.. but no one makes one. So I’m missing out of on the interesting aspects of (in my world) of vintage lenses or recreations of vintage lenses from Lensbaby, (Twist 60, Velvet etc) and Lomography (Degaurotype Achromatic- similar to Lensbaby Twist 60). These and say old Nikon/Canon/Helios etc 1950’s-1980’s MF lenses have a nice look in full frame and don’t impress much on a 1.9x crop or even 1.5 crop... looking through the center portion of the lens which by today’s standards isn’t sharp, but also lacks the sides and corners where the artifacts of vintage lens design and wear and tear become interesting. Not for everyone, but still. Ok.. guess I need to get a Nikon Z 6II with my Atomos or even a Sony of some sort for those shots...

Are you able to pull auto focus on a bmpcc 4K? I set this up with canon EF 50 mm on a bmpcc 4K but the camera doesn’t show the f-stop of the Lens neither does auto-focusing transmit to the lens from the camera. Does yours work or are you pulling focus manually?

It's basically a filter used in big budget films. My friend did lighting for Indiana Jones and told me about it but there was no such filter on the market until more recently. I would definitely check it out. 1/4 and 1/8 are amazing. Especially for skin. It's like having a diffuser on your lights and the sun.

I’m willing to go even further than you are here..they’re both a waste of money to me. I just bit the bullet and bought specific Micro 3/4 CINEMA lenses. I found the increase in quality over using photography lenses, as well as the usability of them far more attractive and better to work with. I bought the full Rokinon set and I’m far happier than all of my canon glass.

    • @ekphotography

I have the Rokinon Cinema DS complete set but in EF mount which is a more future proof mount and is why I use a Viltrox, which works just perfect. Some people don't want to buy into MFT lenses and the new 6K is a perfect reason for that not to mention RED's,Canon and higher end video cameras can use EF mount and Vice a versa.

The Cine lock on the MB is worth the money...Viltrox is too milky/hazy ...your eyes look soft...dead give away....people will spend $2000 on a lens and then feed it into a $130 adaptor ...not a smart move.

If you have an expensive lens like the Xeen which is 2500 each. You shouldnt be putting a $150 adapter at the back of a lens like that. 650 is still very cheap on the metabones for the kind of lens you want to use.

I've only used a Viltrox from the start. The minute differences that may or may not be there, do NOT justify the $400 price difference, unless you're super anal and got money to burn. Honestly, when I pair my 18-35 with the Viltrox, I still sometimes find it to be too sharp. Often, I'll slap one of my Super Takumars on there, and get what I'm looking for.
