I love the series! They are very informative and the videography is fantastic. Thank you! A side note about storing food in bear country, Never leave food in your bike! Bears have torn apart bikes to get to the food and they will get it! And your bike will be unrideable after that. Hanging your bag of food in a tree is the right thing to do. You should also put in that bag your toothpaste and shaving kit with soaps. Anything that has a perfume scent. And don't forget anything you might have in your pockets like gum and mints! Believe me bears can smell it!
I love seeing an adventure video that 1) involves a 1200 GS. 2) doesn’t show someone dropping their GS 100 times per hour. 3) makes me want to do this. Thank you.
Awesome job Sterling. Camping out in bear/ cougar country is so nerve racking. Every little noise at night is amplified a hundred times. But when you wake up in the morning and see that everything is fine you get this wicked rush of accomplishment. I recommend a cow bell. Bears really don’t like those things. If you’re really worried I recommend an air horn. Every animal for miles will be gone😄 very smart to hang your food. You want that as far away from you as possible
Have toured North America from North to south and east to west. In fact with business and pleasure I have had over 60 trips in the last 30 years. However never on motorcycle. Your videos have inspired me to ship my bike across the pond and spend a few months in your stunning country .....
Hey Sterling, just got home from my own little adventure through Arizona. Thanks for the cool accomodations at your Jonquil Motel in Bisbee, really enjoyed it. You guys all need to check out Sterling and Eva's place in Bisbee, they'll treat you right!
Yes, I find your story very inspiring and motivational. I have been doing 3-5 day adventures around central and northwestern Pennsylvania and having a blast on my BMW G650 GS. Your thoughts and philosophy are good promotional material for our sport of motorcycle touring. The quality of your video documentation is excellent. Keep up the great work. JB

Wonderful spot. If you want to turn your caprese into a full meal, add tuna and/or white beans. Thanks for sharing. I live here in the area and will be doing some camping there next month.
Cowbell with a handle. I lived 30 years in Alaska and spent a lot of time solo camping and flying in bear country. I almost always had a loud cowbell with a nylon strap handle. Bears don't like the sound of metal clanging and they run away from a light shined in their eyes. Of course I also had my 12 ga slug gun and 44 with me.
Went from scottsdale, AZ to Durango, jackson hole, WY, Montana, Idaho and up to Glacier into Canada. Came back through UT, but I enjoyed every moment of the ride. Now retired plan to head out again. Love your video.

Oh what memories. I remember riding across Lake Koocanusa, MT on my way back from IDBDR towards Eureka and Glacier National Park. Wow nice camping spot. Bonus. Caprese salad looked yummy. Thanks for posting videos. High point of my day. Kam

This is my backyard so many days skip outa work early and go ride the Idaho panhandle. Oh.. and I was giddy when I saw that you found "my" camping spot on Koocanusa.
Spent one night hammock camping alone in bear country on the Swedish TET this summer. The brown bears here usually don´t bother you and most often you don´t even notice they are there. But being far out on a a very narrow strip of land with water on all the other sides there was no way to get out of the way even if seeing him approaching from 200yrds. Several years ago after leaving Glacier NP we were riding South on the western side of Lake Koocanusa in a raging thunder and lightening storm. It felt primordial being out there in nature and not a sole around on the lake. I am really liking this series. The wet dark Seattle winter has just begun, so you are teasing my adventure spirit for a ride next Spring.
@@SterlingNoren, yeah, I thought I read that you had lived in Seattle for a time. I'm hoping to get down near some of the places you were riding in Arizona and Utah next year. Your hotel in Gilbert looks really cool.
Hey Stirling - nice set of videos! And just so you know - from my personal experience you are probably safer camping in one of those seldom used free camp sites since they are not often used and thus bears dont get accustomed to coming by to check on interesting cooking smells - since you dont leave much behind and will be packed up and gone before they find you - assuming they take any interest in your faint smells anyway! Such experience as I have had in western Canada - Alberta and British Columbia - is that bears have their "route" of feeding stations that they visit and follow in a season and thus places they dont normally visit are usually ignored - unless you stay for a few days and do a LOT of cooking and produce great odours! The only time I had an issue with a Bear is when I camped at a regularly used picnic area and my visit seems to have coincided with the bear coming around to check for left over tourist garbage!
Oh and by the way the same rule of thumb- getting to seldom used location will - protect you from other things such as garbage hunting Raccoons who will get into your food pack and against Rattlesnakes as well since the Rattlers will be drawn by Mice that are drawn to and picking over left over human waste!

Not yet on the gear but it is likely something I will do at the end of the series when I can talk about what I used and what worked or didn't work so well along the way. Thanks for the idea!
Human in a hammock = bear hot dog.... Really enjoying the Riding Solo series and all the camping. I'm researching ADV bikes with an eye toward doing the same. Ugh, the only thing I am getting out of this today is the urge to leave my job and start riding to MT. Oh wait, it's 27 degrees in my AZ hometown. Maybe I'll wait until June. Great vid as always. Love that Lake campsite!
Hi mate watched all the video’s so far just wondered why not get hydrated food sealed bag so no smell no bears a lot lighter just stick in your panniers just a thought from deepest Cornwall UK stay safe mate.
@@SterlingNoren Sealed bags bears can still smell, they are amazing animals in that regard. I keep my food in a bear canister, hike it a couple hundred yards downwind. Good bear safety is easy to do, follow the rules. 100yrds between where you cook, where you sleep, and where you store food. The golden triangle rule.
In 2008 I was on a short 5 day motorcycle trip with my 8 yearold grandson on the back. Hot August day took a side road to find a camp spot. Discovered a beautiful beach, had a swim, got on my phone to my wife and said. "I don't know where I am, I don't know the name of the lake, but I found the lake we're going to build our retirement cabin on." I am now sitting in my beautiful lakeside home on Lake Kooçanua. (Canadian side) Lake Kooçanua is 90 miles long, half in US half in Canada, I've ridden every road around this lake in both countries. It's incredible. Name comes from: Kootenay river= Koo, Canada= can , USA = USA Hence Koo-can-usa.
G'day Sterling, watching an older playlist from you that I haven't seen yet. You say in this episode that you lost all your footage when you crashed your drone into the mountain. How is it possible that we saw that footage in that earlier episode If you lost it all when the drone tumbled down the mountain ? Anyway, love it.. rsm8
My cell phone, which was attached to the controller, recorded a lower resolution back up file. I lost the higher quality footage, but had a lower resolution copy.

Good bear safety is easy to do, follow the rules. 100yrds between where you cook, where you sleep, and where you store food. The golden triangle rule.
Great video, really good series
I've heard the Wind River Range running north and south is worth the ride.
(Canadian side)
Lake Kooçanua is 90 miles long, half in US half in Canada, I've ridden every road around this lake in both countries. It's incredible. Name comes from: Kootenay river= Koo, Canada= can , USA = USA
Hence Koo-can-usa.

My cell phone, which was attached to the controller, recorded a lower resolution back up file. I lost the higher quality footage, but had a lower resolution copy.
